Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

Microsoft has beta dev kits out in the wild according to Thuway. That means they've been planning a 2013 launch since before the ps4 announcement at the minimum.

Well yeah, obviously.

Late 2013 makes the most sense in accordance with projected YOY declines.

And, we got leaked information about Microsoft's internal roadmap a long time ago.

It just struck me as well... taking "always online" in the WiiConnect sense of the word, wouldn't a 6 month lag on development be less of a deterrent to just pushing out crapware and letting it continually update behind the scenes as time goes on?

We've already seen developers take more liberties with the launch quality of their games knowing that they could patch from time to time. When you can potentially be rolling out patches as and when, transparently to the user, does that do anything to the incentive to launch a solid product?

It's so encouraging to see people acknowledging that "always online" is an ambiguous phrase.

I remember last year rumors about Wii U, some developers complained about the dev kit and hardware power. Now with Durango we have not seen any complains about Durango tools or hardware power, most say "both will be similar".

This was more in reference to the original post from Ideaman:

No i mostly have third-party info, very rare first-party leaks.
And for those sources, they are struggling A LOT to reach a satisfactory framerate for their next-gen projects, on Durango but also on PS4. And they are far from being clumsy at game development.

We can assume that there may be some hiccups, but for devs to struggle a ton means there's probably an issue somewhere on both sides of the fence. This is what seems odd about it. Neither camp is calling that out, other than a few rumors about issues with yields from the Durango camp.

It is "ambiguous" because all we have are rumors, at 21 we'll have real facts, and it will not be ambiguous anymore. Maybe, we need to wait to 21 for judgement?

We'll have Microsoft's definition of the phrase, unless they've decided to just drop it from their marketing lexicon altogether. But either way I think it's a phrase that's ripe for misinterpretation, especially when it gets applied to a different technology. We know what it means for a Roku Box to be "always online", but when you apply that term to a gaming console it becomes ambiguous.

Actually, it's even confusing when you talk about a Roku Box being "always online", since it still has functionality when you're offline.

Let's get it back on topic .. I dont know who but the person who mentioned 2005 Sony E3 presser is absolutely spot on with his example - event but not ready. I was firmly in the camp of MS' plans being well and truly for launch this year but this rumors (this isnt the first one this week) are just diminishing the confidence there. :]

I wonder if Respawn's game is going to be a launch title? That could be big. I don't think it'll be Halo big obviously, but I have faith that Respawn is going to deliver something really good.

A big FPS/TPS by Respawn, a big racing game by Turn 10/or whoever is going to make PGR5, Ryse, and not to mention we're getting a ton of awesome looking multiplats on both next-gen consoles. It's going to be a good Holiday for gamers!

And, if Microsoft definition is not clear, then some webs will ask them for a clearer definition, just as Sony and PS4.

We have some information, but we haven't the whole thing. And yes, I agree, it's a phrase that's ripe for misinterpretation.

EDIT: If some projects have been cancelled, I'm starting to think Ryse can be one of those.

It says at the end of the Kotaku article that one source says 'don't expect it until next year'.

I just have trouble seeing MS push back to 2014. The 360 will be in its ninth year on the market. Granted, sometimes I do wonder what would have happened if the PS3 came out a year later, and Sony pushed the PS2 on another year. I guess MS could launch in the Spring if they had to.

Respawn and Destiny coming out around the same time doesn't seem like a good idea to me, but maybe.

I thought Destiny got pushed back to 2014, or that's what everyone was expecting at least.

Next November IMO. Assuming its exclusive, it will be MS tent pole release for next year.

It didn't seem ready after the press stuff. But all that shit was weird, for all we know they happened to learn about respawn's game and the MS deal.

Something happened literally hours before.

they may have delayed for a massive spec upgrade. so it will be more powerful than ps4

Perhaps they are behind in development if developers are being told to remove the always on capability in their software? Or it could just be that the box is a pain to develop for due to some unique architectural challenges.

Wouldn't that be massively ironic?

They could not change the APU in response to Sony's PS4 reveal and launch this year, not a chance.

Interesting. I hope that Destiny launches in the Spring then. Would be an awesome time to come out since the Holiday is going to be jam-packed.

Bungie confirmed it was a 2014 game when they announced it. Not sure that means it was pushed back - it's just not a 2013 game.

It doesn't. it just means they know it's not going to be a launch title if the ps4/durango launch this year. Hell, only Sony has said they plan on launching the ps4 'Holiday 2013' and only KZ has been announced as a launch title.

With what we know, it's probably safe to assume Respawn's game isn't scheduled for release until 2014.

I think it's more likely that it's the newly formed studios who are behind because of "new studio" problems.

Doubtful. They'll save them for the fall because the sales expectations will likely dictate it.

Depends on what's already coming down the pipe for fall 2014.

Maybe they will launch next year with a big spec bump.

Forget the spec bump, from the info being thrown around MS is more worried on getting what they have actually working as intended.

Which IMO means we are gonna get an expensive, but unflattering hardware box that is being made with tight TDP targets, and designed with focus on MS being able to turn around a bigger profit much sooner than later in comparison to the 360.

Thanks, I was wondering that too.

I'm thinking Titan in spring 2014 and Destiny fall 2014.

Why would MS release a title as potentially as big as this in the Spring?

Doesn't make much sense at all. I they go 2014 it will get a September through November release date guaranteed.

Spring releases work for Rockstar. And going up against Destiny and Call of Duty in the fall might not be a good idea.

I think the tech & techniques from this gen will carry on to the next with lower costs and prestige. EA & Activision & Ubisoft will be looking for what JRPGs were to the PS1, GTA was to the PS2, COD was to this gen, etc. With diminishing returns, game makers won't need as many people to make a game, driving down dev costs and expanding experimentation.

If a next gen AAA game can be made with 150-200 people, those other 400 can go make something else.

This isn't going to be the first generational transition in history where costs and personnel go down. They will go up.

I have a really hard time believing this for either system since were dealing with consoles with a extremely straightforward transition from PC. This just sounds crazy.

I know it doesn't mean much coming from me, but IdeaMan's third party sources in the past have been spot on. Take it as a rumour, of course, but one that is most likely true.

Spec bump? Lol

I really really would love Microsoft shut mouths at 21/E3, the melting down could be great, but well, I guess you're right and all rumors are real.

i wouldn't be surprised if the games they show on the 21st look really really good graphically. it's just something i've kind of expected all along,

Yeah, I cant believe a 2014 launch either. At the same time it's hard to fathom that MS didnt have their first parties begin their dev cycles at the right time.
