Kotaku Rumor: Respawn's Game Xbox 360/720 Only, always-online, FPS, Includes Details

So a first person game... that's a shooter...in a sci-fi setting... with soldiers vs mechs...

/yawn

And I thought new gen consoles would help this stagnating industry.

Is there a citeable source for that? And if true it would give Sony a degree of ownership over the IP. Not even 15% in shares can give Sony that much power imo.

Its a rumor from VGleaks. Not sure where you are going with your second sentence. You dont need a degree of ownership of a IP to co-develop a project of that IP. If its true then either Sony or SE asked the other to help finish the project. There is probably other conditions if its true.

The source said multiplayer would support 16 players but that Respawn would add AI-controlled characters to make the action more frenetic and to give novice players a greater chance to score some kills.

LOL, maybe my 5 year old nephew can become a 3+ kdr beast at this game.

Interested to see what these guys come up with.

If they can nail the one more go factor of CoD they could have something big here.

That plus MS marketing dollars behind them if this is really exclusive could be a winner.

modified source engine on durango is what makes this rumor very fishy to me. Does Valve allow source code modification with the license?

If past behavior predicts future performance, think back to all of Microsoft's third party exclusives and what platforms they were on.

That tends to imply they'll see release on a rival console after a while also. Kotaku's sources seemed unsure on that point.

Bring on the exclusives. I want to see a real dogfight next gen.
Exclusives that take full advantage of the hardware and services to bring us something new and exciting? Sure, I'm game.

Haven't heard any of that yet though.

Wait, now people are complaining that an online multi-player game is always online?
Nobody will have a problem if its a purely multiplayer game. But it isn't, is it?

So many people are misunderstanding the problem. If tomorrow we heard that Battlefield 4 was multiplayer-only and thus, required a persistent online connection, there'd be fucking celebration.

wow this is huge, if true, MS has just secured an important third party developer/game. This definetely spices things up, very looking forwar to MS's event and hopefully more Megatons dropped, I am hoping for a surprise very very powerful hardware

Buttrocks is solid though.

Look at his post history.

He's had a few misses, but even those are plausibly just cancellations before reveal (like Road Rash).

I think Sony can nullify this with enough Destiny co-marketing. Interesting to which phrase wins out of 'Creators of Halo' and 'Creators of Call of Duty'.

Nope. It's Source, which is probably even worse.

Technically Source is based on Q3 if you go deep.

Oh I trust Buttrocks entirely. I still have no idea how he got that Remember Me footage. I just wonder if timed exclusivity is worth it in the grand scheme of things.

Well I knew if they were getting one from a third party something like this is much more likely over something ridiculous like BF4, GTA5 or COD.

I would suspect that if it's Source very little of Source is left anymore a la CoD and idtech3.

Indeed. People don't seem to understand how software works or what engine actually is. Unless you want to write everything from scratch (which I doubt anyone wants), just license an engine that suits your need somewhat and expand upon it.

I imagine there's going to be a lot of these multiplayer only shooters coming out for next-gen. If there's no subscription, I might check it out.

Saw this coming a mile away when I heard the EA exclusive rumors. These guys helped launch the Xbox 360 with Call of Duty 2.

So both Bungie and Respawn are going online-ony.

Console or PC you buy will not matter. Publishers will require and design their AAA games around online.

So we may see new Epic exclusive, Crytek exclusive, and Respawn exclusive; only on Xbox.

...
Mega cash money battle, bring it! Activision + Sony vs MS + EA.

There are still posts speculating that BF4 is MS exclusive when there are multiple reports saying that its coming to PS4. Its getting fucking annoying.

I hope so.

If the campaign's were just going to be linear QTE-driven pap anyway, might as well focus all the attention on multiplayer.

You get a shooter, and you get a shooter! EVERYONE gets a shooter! Though since Bungie's shooter requires online and is on ps4, online-only games aren't a lock for MS exclusivity unless bags and bags of money are included.

But 720 will also have Destiny.

I guess it depends on how much they are really getting out of the DLC deal. But when you are weighing up the consoles against each other, if Destiny is comparable to Respawn's game PS4 comes out on top overall looking at current rumours I'd say, especially when you add in the new rumours about Microsoft's internal dev struggles.

Looking at past behaviour, I wouldn't be surprised if exclusivity was timed looking at this thread in conjunction with the other one about internal development issues - whether that timed exclusivity prevents PC release or PS3/4 release until a later date.

Essentially the same deal as Mass Effect. 360/720 first, PC, then PlayStation.

Because I'm guessing EA likes to have its cake and eat it too.

Microsoft is going for the moneyhat big time. I could see it possibly working too. Hmm... this gen is gonna be hella interesting.

Well MS going after that shooter market again. You can't blame them though. They've built Xbox upon this genre and its been successful for them. I care very little for it though, so I hope MS have some interesting outside of this. I'm not holding my breath however.

I wonder if it's a case of Respawn just not having enough staff to do two versions. Since based on this, they don't seem to even be handling the 360 port.

So we have Assassin's Creed IV rumored to be always-online, Watch_Dogs rumored to be always-online, Destiny to be always-online, and now Respawn's new Durango exclusive always-online game.

If that doesn't scream some form of always-online adoption, I don't know what will.
All these games that will at the end require online drm, are like they dont exist for me. Hopefully my -and other peoples- 60€ per "always online" title will be missed.
Lets see who lasts more, the 60€ in my wallet or a highly paid product that sells less than expected. For as many times as needed.

And of course, for people that think like I do, I guess microsoft will have to show us some good enough games that are NOT always online crippled,
so that we consider buying their new drm-troubled console in the first place.
The same for sony too, in the possible case they plan to roll "microsoft rumor" style

and FPSes doesn't... SMH!

An entire genre? Don't be so ridiculous.

It's no secret that the first person shooter genre has become stale this generation, but sprinkled within it are some excellently crafted franchises that have built large audiences and acclaim for a reason.

Final Fantasy gets neither, for a reason.

It's clutching at straws to immediately write off a new game from this team specifically, just because it's in a saturated genre. Especially when it's a deflected defence for Final Fantasy, a franchise that's been in need of a rest, a rethink, and a new developer for over half a decade.

I'm surprised EA would be OK with an exclusive game.

This is the perfect game to do it. It's a new IP so there's no established userbase on neither platform. The exclusivity deal will counter the loss of sales on the other platforms and then some. If the IP catches fire it's a win-win for everyone involved.

As long as they keep moneyhatting mainstream shooters I say more power to them, I have zero interest in another generation of that.
