Kotaku Rumor: Respawn's Game Xbox 360/720 Only, always-online, FPS, Includes Details

What I don't understand is why people are getting so excited about this game. Yes Call of Duty 4 was a great game, but these guys are the very ones who made modern warfare 2 which had so many problems like the javelin glitch, the op models, ridiculous kill streaks, and the list goes on.

This is the perfect game to do it. It's a new IP so there's no established userbase on neither platform. The exclusivity deal will counter the loss of sales on the other platforms and then some. If the IP catches fire it's a win-win for everyone involved.

I was talking about this possibility with y2kev and charlequin the other day and the other main benefit here would be Microsoft extremely heavily pushing a multiplayer focused shooter directly to the Xbox audience, with EA throwing in a fair amount of marketing money as well.

Since that's much more the Xbox's wheelhouse than Sony's, it's not like losing out on a game that would have equal appeal to all platforms.

Looking at past behaviour, I wouldn't be surprised if exclusivity was timed looking at this thread in conjunction with the other one about internal development issues - whether that timed exclusivity prevents PC release or PS3/4 release until a later date.

Essentially the same deal as Mass Effect. 360/720 first, PC, then PlayStation.

Because I'm guessing EA likes to have its cake and eat it too.

Yeah I suspect PC might not show up immediately, especially since the implication here is that all porting is not being done at Respawn.

I called this a few weeks ago. :)

It makes sense for a lot of reasons. As a Call of Duty fan I've been extremely curious to see what Respawn is working on. If this game is exclusive to Durango it makes me much more interested in that console.

Can't wait to see the game.

Yeah, it had so many problems that it was insanely popular and held my attention for hundreds of hours. And many of those problems you mention were quickly fixed in patches. Big deal.

Microsoft is going for the moneyhat big time. I could see it possibly working too. Hmm... this gen is gonna be hella interesting.

Microsoft's strategy to win the next-gen war revealed

And I'm ok with this

"Two sources have told us that this new game is, in fact, always-online."

How to lose your hype in one sentence.

Or... the game could be Online Multiplayer only. Or it prefers you to always be online to get the full experience, but won't punish you if you're offline.

Also, cool, I'm not excited about the game itself, but I'm excited to see what Respawn is working on and what they're going to make.

I'm in the same boat. I look forward to this.

Toriyama's Waifu Trilogy needs a rest. EDIT: Actually to rest in peace, henceforth.

Final Fantasy itself doesn't.

This. There would be excitement for a new mainline FF game. Using the bad reaction to the FF13 brand to prove that no one cares for FF as a whole is stupid.

Eh, I can't say anything (NDAs you know, and it's not like I know everything anyway) but... Don't believe everything you read on the internet :P

PS: Out of curiosity, can you contact a mod via PM and tell them if something is true or false privately to avoid leaking stuff?

EA essentially gets the best of both worlds.

Co-publishing/development and/or marketing dollars for exclusivity at the launch window. Microsoft helps build their new IP into a big brand.

After that window of exclusivity, they can port the game to the PC, PS3 if its still viable, and the PS4 relatively easily. Pick up any sales they missed there, and with the PS4 on a bigger installed base than at launch.

Release whatever sequel eventuates if its a success on all platforms.

If you wanted to be that careful you shouldn't hint you are willing to confirm/deny this stuff even if privately. You're putting yourself on the spot regardless. hehehe

EA also might be more willing on the basis that they probably really, really want this game to be a success and feel having Microsoft's weight thrown on as well would help ensure that.

i accept allllllllll youre appologies.

Still haven't seen Dead Rising 3. >:(

There's really people happy about hardware-exclusive 3rd party games? I mean...why not hope Microsoft stops charging for online instead?

Um, you do know how everyone gets all "MICROSOFT SUCKS CAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE EXCLUSIVES," right? Of course people are happy about hardware-exclusive third-party games. Besides, Microsoft's done it before, with games like ALAN WAKE and GEARS OF WAR, which both happen to be some of the most kickass games of the gen. :D

Respawn goes to Microsoft.

Final Fantasy goes to Sony.

Sony wins the battle so far (for me).

That's unlikely to occur with a mainline Final Fantasy game. Even though Final Fantasy is still more popular on the Playstation platform, Final Fantasy 13 for example, sold half a million in its first month on Xbox 360. Considering the fact that Square Enix is currently having financial troubles, they're not going to voluntarily forgo an consumer block that has shown interest in their franchise.

I never thought I'd be completely uninterested in an upcoming console generation, but that's exactly the case right now. A lot of these rumors are going to have to be wrong in order for that to have any chance at changing.

Right! So this news is Busted, since it not appears as it is shown.

Yes you can.

Yes.

Modified version of the Source engine?!
I'm out. Source is a horrible engine to develop on (from personal experience), and outside of Valve, very few developers have used it successfully. But then to go and build a (rumoured) always online shooter? What kind of scope are we talking here because Source can't handle big well.

This is smart for EA. Gaining special interest and hype from the MS fanbase especially for a new IP. I still think Sony is doing something with SE and R* for PS4.

Oh I know haha, it was genuinely out of curiosity, at least this time as I'm not entirely 100% sure of what's going on and I only know a couple of facts for sure. I've always been curious about that kind of stuff, giving mods special info etc.

If I could resist not telling anyone the plot twist in the last Mass Effect 3 DLC until the day it came out, I can keep anything a secret :P

Thanks for the advice though.

If Microsoft can be proactive with its online service, in the sense of investing in community tools/features that other platforms haven't executed as well, then I'm perfectly happy paying the small subscription fee, particularly one tied to savings for digital purchases.

For a lot of people, I imagine that's how it makes sense. When there's not a comparable feature set, even if alternatives don't charge a fee, it still plays to Microsoft's advantage. Now, that being said, if the alternatives offer the same or better features this time around, that consumer discussion will play out very differently.

This could backfire because if the game is not a hit and they hurt their relationship with CoD. I think the DLC time exclusivity helped the 360 a lot this gen.

EA seems like a mad king recently. Just thrashing everywhere. Betting an exclusive horse, one of your finest, at the very start of next gen?

Just got to wonder how much MS paid. Thats a lot of potential money being left on the table.
