I would understand being angry at the presence of this stuff if they worked a bunch of cringeworthy meme references into the game's dialogue, but that's not what this is. It's just a series of dumb Easter eggs.

They could have come up with something original and funny. Or at least given some of these relevance to the game. That "This is your brain on CTOS" sign actually got a laugh out of me, because it had context. There's a difference between referencing something to create humor and just regurgitating something that's been said before.

Easier said than done. They could have come up with a lot of things but they worked with what they had. Original humour isn't easy on the best of days, trying to express it through a game is even harder.

I had a laugh at that message as well.

I wonder if the people who came up with this actually thought it was funny or clever

They thought the game's target audience would find it funny & clever.

Also, remember that Ubisoft has a running trend of having the most unfunny, tryhard E3 press conferences in the business. The French don't know humor. Simple as that.

I made this .gif to sum up my reaction to these memes. I hope it is as unfunny as there are

Ubisoft just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Canadian culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Canada, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Canadian public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Watch_Dogs, nor will they purchase any of Ubisoft's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Ubisoft has alienated an entire market with this move.

Ubisoft, publicly apologize and cancel Watch_Dogs for PS4 and Xbox One or you can kiss your business goodbye.

That just doesn't work with Canada

This is just awkward....

I think the problem people have with this is that they dont like seeing big companies try to use "young" stuff. It's like seeing your dad say Yo or seeing that the joke you made up is not told on the national news. The hipster and rebellious side of people seem to want to scream "Nooo stop! It's our things!"

not really. I just think it's unfunny as shit

Sure, but you do not see threads about unfunny jokes. This "hate" seem to be because they used popular internet memes, which are supposed to be "our" things. It's like having a slang with your friends and have a parent or other group use it. Even more when the slangs and memes are old ones that no one really ever use anymore or are so popular that the underground groups started to hate on them.

this is awesome, it reminds me of the laughing man, but in a contemporary context. People need to be less phonies about this.

Plenty of people didn't mind Guacamelee and the way it used memes because they made it their own.

The issue with people disliking these isn't because we feel robbed by the machine maaaaaan. That's fairly antiquated and only largely works for sites like 4chan. The issue with stuff like this is that the Internet itself beats a new meme to death within a couple of weeks. And then stuff like this is when you read a Facebook feed months later with a friend laughing at a rage comic.

that could be part of it but there is a difference between using a meme in context and using a meme to "fit in". Just throwing whatever popular meme of yesterday in a game completely out of context just calls for cringe worthy responses. People seem to not mind big companies taking apart of meme but just in context, e.g Sony taking apart of the "Banderas-ing". It can be really cool at times, but just inundating your game with whatever meme possible is just....awkward...

So I have to play offline and miss what seems to be a big part of the game or else I'll be bombarded with jokes that become unfunny an hour after they were first created? Thanks Ubisoft.

Well people do not seem to have problems with Binding of Isaac and the game is filled with memes. Troll faces, Forever alone and all that. I think the combinaison of the game getting bashed and the game doing some annoying stuff is where all the hate come from. 4chan have threads on this issue 24/7 filled with 800 replies and they actually defend Binding of Isaac memes and minecraft stuff saying "It's just something you rarely see!"

Just like with any game that lets people write stupid shit or have stupid names?

Guess we should all quit TF2, because there's some memetastic names running around in servers as we speak.

In other games you can just join a different server/game. As far as I know Watch_Dogs doesn't let you do that.

there's a couple things at play there. Isaac came out 3 years ago when this shit was a bit more relevant in general, it barely has meme stuff in it, and the little it does isnt really in your face or just the meme being there, and its also really fucking good so people talk about other stuff

Guacamelee is fantastic. The meme shit is bullshit.

personally I didnt post this as a "lol watch_dogs sucks", just that this thing about the game sucks, just about the same as the troll face is silly in isaac and the memes in guacamelee are annoying

I just think this is extra annoying by its lack of any sort of context. It's just the memes popping up like "hey we know about this stuff its funny right??" so your dad thing certainly applies, but I don't think it's the main issue. I certainly dont think memes are "mine" and they're taking it and trying to be funny in a dad way. keep memes away from me that's all

The difference here is that Binding of Isaac wasnt a victim of memes.

This reminds me of that cg squirrel movie that used gangnam style in its ads. How were they supposed to know so many people would hate the song by then because it was played everywhere.

Can we change the OT title back to Watch_Doge now?

༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Give HACK

Wasn't it Watch Dawgs though ?

Anyway. Glad I traded my copy for Dark Souls II. I am a serious gamer. Pfft.

Yeah I think it's pretty stupid too, but then again I have never found the use of memes to be funny in the first place. Memes are for the unoriginal and weak. That's right son
