League of Legends hits 5 million peak concurrent players.

Holy shit congratulailtions Riot all my friends love it and I can't get myself to like it.

This game really exploded

I prefer Dota, quite frankly... Can't seem to get into LoL. I don't know if it's the art style or the watered down gameplay.. Dota just seems so much more..... pure.

I feel so out of touch with MOBAs sudden popularity. Good on it though, that's great numbers, and it seems to be the flagship for esports right now, if the "browse channels" section of twitch is anything to go by..

They've been popular for years.

Dota is gonna need to water down its gameplay if it ever wants to get close to these numbers

Eh, maybe it's because I have played DOTA 2 first, but I don't see myself ever playing LoL. Aside from the fact that it just looks ugly, the fact you have to pay for heroes is irksome.

Having all hero's available out of the box and more coming in dota 2. Paying for hero's behind a paywall is just a no go for me same thing with Smite.

Simply incredible numbers, kinda wish i could actually get into the game. Yet another reminder of Blizzards missed opportunity with this genre. This probably should have been their net cash cow genre after WoW was done but they really dropped the ball. Riot have done an incredible job and they will be hard to top.

"With the success of this genre, I don't get why more developers aren't seriously trying it."

Joke post? There's been tons of attempts over the past 4-ish years. The problem is none of them attempt to change or add anything significant with the genre, but instead try to play more or less just like DotA or LoL, but with shit competitive balance, none of Valve's polish, and LoL obviously has the accessibility factor and millions of people already playing it. There's not much room for anything else that tries to be "them" and all the me-toos are just lazy cash-in attempts.

Are you kidding me? There are many Dota clones, even on consoles.

Huh like what? I can only think of 2 XBLA games that have slight Dota elements in them. But not really "clones".

Maybe I should have said on other platforms because that's what I meant. There is definitely room for this genre in console space.

Yes Blizzard completely ignoring it for so long was really a foolish mistake. I know it became big about the time WoW was dominating, so all their attention and resources went there. But millions of people were also playing Dota 1 from around the world. It completely overshadowed the base WIII multiplayer. I think Blizzard even had Dota tournaments at Blizzcon several times, but no one thought "uh hey, why don't we make money off of this?" Maybe they figured "well they have to buy Warcraft III to play anyways so it's all good." They still did nothing when LoL started to become popular. You could argue they had bigger fish to fry, but it was so clearly in their face for so long yet they did nothing. Then a company famous for FPS games swoops in and starts making an absurd amount of money by remaking the same game.

I only know of Guardians of Middle Earth and Awesomenauts.

To be honest, the same thing applies. There was a LOTR licensed game and it looked slow and plodding. The genre, because of the relation RTSs, is designed around a KB/M. The best way to approach it for a controller is to take elements from the genre and do something else interesting that's far removed from DotA and LoL, which is what games like Monday Night Combat (not Super) did and I actually really liked that.

And they STILL haven't responded which is crazy. I mean sure they have missed their chance to dominate the genre now but they still could have gotten some presence and hoped to improve from there. As is it's hard to see their game having any impact at all in this market. It's a genre that is very similar to RTS games and frankly it is just so suited to blizzard as a company.

I don't think i will ever understand completely how they missed that opportunity. I don't think they had bigger fish to fry, they just lacked the foresight to see how big this genre was becoming.

Since it came out on the Mac a little while ago, I downloaded it (since it's free!) but haven't played yet. Maybe this weekend I'll play a couple games and see how I like it, and make that 5,000,001 concurrent players.

I do wonder about that. Blizzard must be kicking themselves. The genre has exploded and it all sprang from their game, yet they really don't have much to show for it.

Anyways, good for Riot. Been playing LoL for about two years now and it's still quite fun.

Incredible number, but I'll still stick to Dota the artstyle in LoL just isn't my cup of tea. Also the character design in Dota really is incredible.
LoL seems to be a good entry in the Moba genre only thing that really bugs me are the uninteresting heroes in LoL.
Well I even think it's good that most people play LoL.. less annoying people in Dota. ( Not generalizing but 2 years ago playing on EU West in LoL was horrible! )

To be fair they still get lots of money from their current properties.

Blizzard can't stand anything they didn't make themselves. That's why they threw out the tone, art style, game mechanics and character customization of the originals when they made Diablo 3.
