Taric is fucking beast. I'm surprised he doesn't see more play. Such an amazing kit for teamfighting.

Yeah...the compendium Valve offers whilst, I can see it as being scummy, there are just so many net positives to it then not. You can earn levels in game if you don't buy it, you earn stuff for having it...

...I imagine on the other hand it'd be impossible to offer a huge set of skins/items like Valve does because of the nature of how Riot deals with skins..like I think it'd be impossible for them to pump out 10 skins+A bunch of cosmetic things for a compendium like service.

Right, the concept of the compendium is great. Fans buy it, they get something out of it. Valve gets something out of it. The teams and players get something out of it. And the reason why I think it's brilliant is because it gives fans a direct way to financially support the product. The compendium in a way acts like a ticket to a sporting or cultural event.

Valve's tangential enabling of gambling fuckery, how the revenue is split, etc. is besides the point.

As far as what Riot could offer, I have a crazy idea...nothing. Give nothing. Just let fans donate money and the money goes to the participants (incl. Riot and its eSports team). "Twitch" the whole LCS. Dump the Riot stipend. Fans now set that rate. It'll never happen, and if I'm Riot I never pull the trigger on that, but as a thought exercise and experiment I think it's really interesting.

i'm saying capitalism as sell your own shit, tsm. sell t-shirts, mugs, idk, you solve it

riot is already giving you subsidies, why does riot have to also solve all your business issues?

the thing that people seem to have a real hard time understanding for some reason is that riot is not giving teams a share of the icon sales, they're giving them a share of the EVERYTHING sales

sure, that number may be low, so like i said, raise it. if rito needs money just make more ahri and katarina skins, those make more money than shitty tsm icons

problem solved

after that well, you're the businesspeople, regi, hotshot, you figure it out, it's not riot's responsibility to make you rich

How do you think most professional sport teams earn their money and pay their players? Merchandising is only a small portion of the revenues (even less in esport). Most of the money usually comes from selling broadcasting rights, ticket sales, and other things that LoL teams can't negotiate for or profit from. Another big source is sponsorships. However, riot also limits how teams and players can earn money through that as well. With how little riot stipends the teams, what they do make from sponsorships is barely enough to cover salaries and operation.

again just give better subsidies to teams, problem solved

the sponsorship stuff i've yet to see actual proof that riot is strictly limiting sponsors besides that one htc story and the g2a thing (and maybe youporn now that i think about it, but i think every game bans youporn for some reason)

the htc thing was dumb, but i think it's hardly a deal breaker

and i don't mean like hard evidence like i'm acting hard to convince, just give me like 2 more examples or something, i haven't heard anything

if you're able to provide, i'm with you, let playes and team do their sponsorship stuff however they like (as long as it doesn't involve scummy sites like g2a)

Maybe I'm wrong (hopefully not) but I don't see how broadcasting rights for eSports can even compare to those of regular sports or even manage to be sizeable, at least for regular TV. No one who's a current viewer is going to turn ESPN on to watch league. Maybe something can be collected with online rights but hopefully nothing in form of exclusive rights.

I agree they shouldn't limit teams relationships with their sponsors. The way to go is probably going to be turning players into NASCAR liveries on stage.

Riot should also give an asinine prize pool for every league if only just to shut up people about that inane point.

I wouldn't freak out, I think people are losing perspective, even if Riot has monumentally fucked up thus far, League is still big enough that investors and sponsors are just going to see that they just filed 2 arenas with mostly people in their 20s, a sort of holy grail for marketing lol in different continents too! That stuff alone will keep sponsors coming if Riot manages to be smart.

i think the prize pool stuff is a meaningless arm race that doesn't really do anything, it's an arbitrary number that says nothing about the state of league esports (unlike say, the viewership numbers, how many leagues there are, etc.). riot chose a different way to support the scene than doto (a way i find myself to be way more healthy), that's all there is to it

i would be very disappointed if rito wasted all that money just to shut up fanboys

there are many other good things that doto compares favorably to league on, let's not copy the one wasteful thing that serves as little more than a penis size contest

like puppets, for instance

i want a sjokz puppet

If the potential earnings from all revenue sources in one game significantly outstrips the potential earnings of another, what stops the top flight League players like Faker from jumping ship? If the talent quality is reduced, then the competitive scene suffers. Young athletes make career decisions based on earnings all the time. There loads of professional basketball and baseball players that had scholarships for other sports that they prefer playing but chose the former because the potential earnings are so much higher. On top of that higher prize pools attract viewers. I watched more DotA during TI6 than I have League for the entire year, purely because of the stakes. More viewers, more sponsors. More sponsors, more money. League status as the top draw for eSports, hell League's status as an eSport people care about in five years, isn't guaranteed at all.

It's not meaningless. It matters quite a bit.

I actually won a game last night. Newt and I had an alistar and a wukong on our team and somehow I was still forced to be the initiator as irelia because they would never do anything except when I was split pushing and 3 levels up on everyone on the enemy team, then one of those two chuckle heads would get caught out somewhere

idk, i think ppl play a game 14+ hrs a day because they like it

money matters, don't get me wrong, but you can do that without a prizepool. like i said, better subsidies, players are taken care of with that and can focus on being awesome at the game

also idk about ti6, your thing is just as anecdotal as anyone else's, i watched some of it cos it had puppets, i watched league a ton more times cos i like league so idk what your personal story means, are there numbers that say ppl watched more ti6 because money? can that even be demonstrated? sounds like biased conclusions to me like most of everything i've heard about esports lately

i think prizepools are a really stupid, base level way to promote your game, it's just a dick measuring contest and kudos on rito for not participating on that

Riot. WHAT THE FUCK. I'm in promos and I get put into a game with a quad queue group and they fucking troll all game. How the FUCK is this shit allowed. Literally the most painstaking fucking game I played in League all year. Why the FUCK did Riot think a quad queue in ranked is fucking acceptable when the group can pretty much grief and troll the solo queue. Get your fucking SHIT together.

I take back what I said about role assignments being improved. Fucking game won't stop giving me support. Back to jungle/top I go, I guess. Was nice while it lasted.

So we just announced The Art of League of Legends Volume 1!

You can buy a physical copy of the book and it's also available digitally in its entirety for free

The book is amazing

I want it, I hope it's available soon in Mexico... or I could ask my roomie to give me her US address.

edit: Also is Teemo's hat washing machine friendly? I have had my Teemo's hat stored in a drawer for way too long and I want to wash it, but I don't know if it can survive the washing machine since it feels kind of delicate. I know the dryer is no-no.

Just went through that book. Very cool. Would love to see more concept art, though. That stuff is super interesting and makes it feel unique.

Like those Sions and Sonas looked really cool.

How is having four people trolling and inting any different from two people trolling and inting?

What were they doing?

bantering with each other, running in mid lane trying get the tower before getting tagged. trying to surrender but not really, moaning and complaining in chat. It's just a whirlwind of toxic and assholish behavior then they started to single me out cuz i wasn't part of their queue. It was some terrible shit.

How is having four people trolling and inting any different from two people trolling and inting?

Not sure if you're being serious...

If you got two people trolling your promo games in the old system, how would having the old system change anything about the match you just lost? How is any of that Riot's fault?

Trolling premades aren't something that begun with Dynamic Q.

The stipends will help with operational cost and allowing for a higher based salary but it doesn't help with the "capitalism" aspect. In fact, having to rely on a fixed stipend by riot rather than some kind of profit sharing system seems counter-productive to that.

Sponsors are only willing to pay out if the can get exposure for whatever they are trying to sell. By far, the most exposure teams can get are at LCS matches and official riot tournaments. Because riot doesn't promote the sponsors or sell advertisement in these matches, the only visibility sponsors get are through shirt logos, which doesn't mean much. Riot refuses to build booths so teams can't even get headset sponsors, the only type of product that the audience would see the players using. Another big restriction is not allowing LCS team to compete in third party tournaments where they would be able to get additional revenues from sponsorship, advertisements, and crowd funding.

Therefore, the only avenues to promote their sponsors are outside of the LCS where only the biggest fans of the teams would even follow. Players are already spending 10-15 hours a week on sponsorship obligations to pay for operations on top of their regular practice. And if the teams don't get enough practice and become relegated, they lose their sponsorships and the majority of their income.

The revenue from broadcasting rights and advertisements doesn't have to be similar to regular sports. I don't know what the solution is but it's ridiculous that the the esport division of riot is losing money when millions watch the LCS weekly during the regular season. The reason why riot doesn't care about profiting from the LCS scene is because they already make so much from selling Riot points. Currently, the LCS is just an advertising tool to sell micro-transaction items to casual LoL players.

Haha, that's kinda the opposite of me. I troll if I run into a 4 man. Of course I'm not so cruel to not tell them before hand and give them the option to dodge.

A true gentlemen.

Anyone care to share their thoughts on Nami vs. Bard as a pick (Leezard)? I've been practicing Nami more these days and I feel like even when I do well the game is a struggle and requires lots of effort. I'm having a hell of a time trying to play her aggressively in lane, seems like nothing is working. If I'm stuck playing a more passive style with her I may as well stop and move on.
