Larian Studios WRPGs with Divinity and Baldur's Gate 3 have a lot of mechanical depth with how no encounter is ever really the same with all the crazy shit you can do. Maybe give those a try.

I really think this is a matter of being burned out on a genre and you are hoping for something somewhere to reignite your interest but I think you've made up your mind to play a genre that is very pick up and play like a FPS with how straightforward they are.

Though if you want an AMAZING FPS to play I heavily recommend Deep Rock Galactic.

I've given so many RPGs so many chances. I no longer want to and made this thread. For a long time I felt like I needed to quit gaming because of how much I couldn't find a modern RPG I liked. I don't think I need them anymore, really. What's interesting is that I still really like old rpgs. I don't need to dedicate my entire life to them. I recently replayed Earthbound and Paper Mario. Loved em both. Looking forward to replay FFIV hard type and Legend of Dragoon. Live a Live too.

Thanks for understanding. A lot of people don't get it. Rpgs for me WERE video games for so long. Don't get me wrong, I played other games but it was far and beyond my favorite. So once I burned out I've been really struggling even like, getting excited to even play games because my attachment to RPGs is so strong. It builds a duality of the fact that my gaming preference is so tied to the RPG that I can't fathom as to why I'm not liking them with few exceptions now. It breeds this cognitive dissonance and it's hard to explain but you seem to get it. But others don't get how painful it is to no longer like a hobby of yours. It's like there's a void and you keep trying to find something to replace but the itch is still there.

It really is been there done that. I've torn that genre apart.

I'm actually excited to dive in FPS. Like, actually excited excited to play games for the first time in years. Halo 2 is a blessing. I'm awe struck it's an original Xbox game. I'm looking to get an Xbox Series X. Is that good for FPS? I figured it would be for the backwards compat.

I went to Distant Worlds and the Final Fantasy VII Remake concert. I love JRPG’s, but I feel like they lost a little of the magic it once had. I’m really hoping XVI is good cause I love action games like DMC/Bayonetta. It’s actually a perfect change for me. That magic is still there, but I find that it’s in retro games. I’m not saying XC doesn’t have it or something newer, but it’s a feeling that only older JRPG’s have. Newer games have a good fantasy vibe and good action combat. It’s hard to explain.

A couple feelings I had about the concert:

1. The composer is cool. Arnold Roth. The rest of the orchestra was the college orchestra. Like it felt more like a fan concert. He also did the Nier concert too.
2. Some of those cutscenes have played in my mind for years and years. The ones for VII Remake were a hit and a miss. Some were good, but some were meh. The once cute, subtle characters don’t carry over the same uplifting vibes. I sometimes wish we had more character from IX or something grounded in fantasy.
3. I love Final Fantasy as a franchise, but it would have been great had they played some Kingdom Hearts or Nier songs.
4. I would absolutely love going to a From Software concert. I would pay a large sum of money for tickets. I would feel like a teenage girl at an MJ concert in the 90’s.

These are my opinions but Witcher 3 isn't an RPG and Persona 5 sucks balls. I was such a rabid fan of Persona 3 someone gave it the name Himusona 3 when discussing it and I waited almost a decade for that dog shit of a shit. Never played Disco Elysium.

Disco elysium is one of the most universally acclaimed rpgs of the last half decade

I think this is just adulthood sucking the joy out of things.

Its much easier to get into a fictional world when you don't have a single thing to worry about as a kid, than it is when you know you'll have to stop in a hour to do some shopping, when you're thinking about that report you need to write, thinking about how much of a pain the next day will be, etc. The more immersed we are in the real world the hard it is to do this for a fictional one.

For me it's definitely not the case. I read lots of books and I'm constantly sucked into their worlds. I'm playing Halo 2 and sucked into its world. It's gaming that changed and how it conveys worlds. In the past games would deliver their stories and leave things to the imagination. Call it a case of being limited by technology at the time or a creative choice but I play Dragon Quest XI, a sequel in a series that had been wrongly accused of having "no story" by Final Fantasy diehards because it had a more minimalist approach to its storytelling, have cutscene after cutscene after cutscene. They really want to tell their story and leave no stone turned. So they pad the games with endless filler bullshit whether it's Persona 5 or DQXI or whatever while limiting the player in where they can go and what they can do. It's like I'm playing visual novels now. The industry decided more, more, more which takes away from the imagination and less need to explore. It's the industry that changed.

Curation limits and outsourcing to studios that could give better quality has peaked and been buried. The PS3 and Xbox 360 era was the start of it and it never went back.

All the anime derived games filled with teenage power fantasy tropes and poorly written predictability, flooding the market with shit. All that fodder for waifu perverts. Saying JRPGs are dead triggers these people, and it's just hilarious.

I never wanted to ditch one, but over time I just played less and less MP titles and I went from cycling so many titles like CS, TF2, Unreal Real, Quake, Call Of Duty, Battlefield, Halo etc and now I just play Battlefield and 1 MP is more then enough for me now lol Played BF4 and BFV for damn near most of the gen and the meat of my gaming was single player stuff.

I know its different for everyone, but I feel as you get older, you want those experiences that fit your age and where you are at in life and I think many probably go from heavy MP to mainly SP lol

Of course different strokes for different folks and I'd be down for Killzone 2 remake day 1, but I see me continuing staying mainly playing SP titles with a sprinkle of MP with maybe 1 or 2 series or something.

Once we get to 100 hours....nah, Ima need those cliffnotes and let me get to the meat of the fun here folks lol Its probably way i even replay so many RPGs, once you KNOW how long it is and know where the "fun" is, its easier to play that then play something new where you don't know where that filler will keep you stuck or some crazy curve on the combat lol

Then you should have made a thread asking about FPS games and why you are enjoying them, instead of a thread dedicated to bashing and dismissing an entire genre.
