LEGO GAF |OT2|: Building Dreams. Demolishing Wallets

Calm Killer

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.
The official word from LEGO on Star Wars Planets Series 4 (via FBTB):

I ordered mine from Amazon France, and they should be here tomorrow. Didn't pay much more than MSRP, but if they are not being sold in NorthAm ever, then I can see supplies drying up quickly as speculators snatch them up for resale.

How is the shipping for amazon.fr to the states? Does amazon prime factor into this?

Bought the Millenium Falcon 7965 for 99 and Helms Deep for 89 at Wal-Mart. They also had the Malevolence for 60 and a TON of Mines of Moria and Goblin Battle for 65. Thinking about going back for them but they had a TON so they could go down more. What do yall think?

Once Walmart marks down an item, it will usually stay that price for months. They might get marked down again in the next markdown period but by then the boxes will probably be crushed or have tons of shelf wear.

The official word from LEGO on Star Wars Planets Series 4 (via FBTB):

The second wave of 2013 LSW planets are no longer launching in the US. They will be available in other global countries, however. As you know, some markets carry slightly different collections depending on their market dynamics, so the strategic decision was made not to launch them in the US.

That is awful news!! I guess I need to find the snowspeeder before the price skyrockets.

I hate to add to the bad news, but here is more info on the 10% coupon not working on certain sets at the brick and mortar Lego store. Post from Bricklink forum: http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=755191

Hello and Good Afternoon folks,

I hope this message finds you all well. I understand there has been a bit of
chatter and discussion around the community in regards to a recent change in
qualifying items that may be purchased with a discount via LEGO Brand Retail
Stores. I have reached out to my colleagues within LEGO Brand Retail as well
as other business partners within the company to investigate this further. I
can confirm with you all today that a new restriction has, in fact, been placed
upon items that may be purchased with a discount through LEGO Brand Retail as
well as LEGO Shop-at-Home. This new rule applies to any and all discount opportunities
that are currently operating. These are the areas that affect the AFOL community:

· LBR LUG Showcase Program

· AFOL Appreciation Shopping Day

· New LBR Store Opening Volunteer Opportunities

· LBR Master Model Building Event Volunteer Opportunities

· LBR Large Scaled Store Event Volunteer Opportunities

As of July 1st, the following “exclusive” items are no longer available to be
purchased at a discount, with no exceptions:

10188 Death Star™
10197 Fire Brigade
10211 Grand Emporium
10214 Tower Bridge
10218 Pet Shop
10221 Super Star Destroyer
10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van
10223 Kingdoms Joust
10224 Town Hall
10225 SW R2D2
10226 Sopwith Camel
10228 Haunted House
10229 Winter Village Cottage
10233 Horizon Express
10937 Batman™: Arkham Asylum Breakout
10232 Palace Cinema
10240 Red Five X-Wing Starfighter™
10237 The Tower of Orthanc
10234 Sydney Opera House™
10236 Ewok™ Village
10235 Winter Village Market
31313 MINDSTORMS 2013
21050 Architecture Studio

I understand that this will likely be met with great disappointment and concern.
I assure you this decision was not made lightly and at an extremely high level
within our organization. I would appreciate your help in passing along this information
to your respective LUGs to ensure everyone is adequately prepared before participating
in one of the above mentioned discount opportunities. Please note this new restriction
ONLY applies to North America, more specifically the United States and Canada.

I have already passed along my feedback concerning this change as the community
representative for North America to the appropriate individuals. Thank you for
your continued time and support.

I don't believe that is correct, as that statement only applies to LUG discounts and other special programs, and not retail coupons.

Sorry if that isn't correct. I thought it was related to the issues people have been having with using the 10% coupon in store for the new Ewok Village set.

It comes out to $17 each for me. Hard for me to pay that much for each when I've been buying them on clearance for $7. That's probably why Series 4 isn't coming.

Actually I may incorrect, upon further review.

The text on the 10% coupon states:

Discount may not apply to Exclusives, LEGO Mindstorms, and LEGO Hard to Find items. See a Brick Specialist for details.

LEGO has been making a lot of restrictive policies of late, you might say anti-consumer, when it comes to ordering from S@H or buying from LEGO stores. I hope this doesn't bite them in the ass by annoying consumers who expect the traditional "easy-going" LEGO company. I hope their recent success is not going to their heads - it's not that long ago that they were skirting bankruptcy. Pissing-off the AFOLs is a bad idea.

I spend thousands of dollars at the Lego store. They're not going to let me use my 10% coupon on select sets?

...

Lego pls.

Just saw this note on TRU's website:

LEGO Hard to Find items have limited availability and are excluded from all LEGO Promotions.

So that leaves Target, Walmart, and Amazon? If they are all towing the line on this new policy then the days of getting the big sets at a discount are over.

I think this is a bad idea, my personal financial losses aside.

It came out to a little over $27 shipped for me. Way too much. I'll just have to convince myself I don't need the S4 Snowspeeder even though it's the only one out of all the series that I want and am willing to pay retail for. Sigh.

eBay and Bricklink would be your other options, but I would do it soon.

These are the Planet sets in question:

From a minifigure perspective, the one to get would be the B-wing Pilot, as the last one was in 2006. The updated Dack in the Snowspeeder set is nice to have, but that minifig has shown up in previous versions in recent years.

I just ordered 2 of each. Came out to about $15 each. It's either pay that now or pay whatever it'll go to on eBay in a couple months.

Damn, that is shitty news indeed. Just when I was planning on buying the Haunted House with my coupon next month and getting double VIP points.

Wait... can we still use our VIP points on those sets?! Isn't that considered a discount?!

VIP is a direct dollar reduction on your total order, so I think we are still fine for that.

VIP reward redemptions aren't considered a discount, they're treated the same as cash or any other payment method. Similar to how Best Buy treats Reward Zone certificates if you're familiar with those.

Good to know, thank you both.

Hmm... I wonder if I can get the Santa Clara store to let use the coupon for the Jedi Defender?

But isn't it "Hard to Find" as it's exclusive to TRU in the US?

In other news, I'm surprised that I'm 14 dollars/points away from 400 VIP points.

Also, I'm dangerously close to snapping up the Monster Fighters line.

I think you'll be fine, but I'm not 100% sure, and I am curious myself.

I didn't even know you could order from other countries Amazon and get it delivered.

I wonder if I could manage to navigate the other sites haha

Haven't bought anything more substantial than minifigs in a while but Ifear Iam inching up on horrible decisions about lotr and hobbit sets.

If this is in fact the case then I am very disappointed. I won't be able to afford some of the larger sets. What about damaged boxes? I got Death Star for 20% off because of a damaged box. Can they not discount that now?

Wouldn't count on Cuusoo getting bigger any time soon. Had the CFO of Lego on my show earlier today... interview was a bit of a mess because of a variety of technical issues, but we asked about Cuusoo and he basically fobbed it off as a niche product. To be honest, he didn't even speak about it as something that produces products, just talked about it being an area where Lego fans can share ideas. Which isn't really the point, is it?

No I don't think that's the point at all for us...

My predictions:

- Portal 2 gets through
- Purdue Pete does not, too niche and limited market
- Space Troopers does not, too similar to galaxy squad
- Exo Suit, tough one, I think the design might be too flimsy for a real set but if they can strengthen it then it will get through.
-Android Bug, not sure, but likely to get through
- Zelda, maybe but chances aren't great due to Nintendo's already existing deal with
-Land rover, doesn't get through, too big and expensive to produce for a limited market.
- Mini shop series, gets made but only one shop front.
- Batmobile, doesn't due to existing licensing with DC
- League of Legends, doesn't get through, too niche a market
- Female Minifigure Set, don't really see the point of this one, already kinda covered by the friends line, doesn't get through.
- Poptropica, doesn't get through, too niche
- ATLAS model, based on past scientific sets it stands a good chance, but it's a really dull model so I'd say no.
- FTL, Nope, too niche
- Road to Oz, fairly good chance but it'd only be one set.
- Ghostbusters (both merged) fairly good chance based on the sales of the delorean and the fact there's 20k votes supporting them but the ghostbusters license is notoriously difficult to obtain which could be a killer.

- Portal 2 - YES
- Purdue Pete - YES, but only sold in US market. It's made of basic blocks. It would be great marketing to non-AFOLs soon to enter work force and have spending money.
- Space Troopers - NO, for same reasons wetwired mentioned.
- Exo Suit - NO, agree strongly the construction won't meet LEGO standards.
-Android Bug - YES
- Zelda -
-Land rover - NO, but may have chance if the minaturize it like they did with Minecraft.
- Mini shop series - NO, I think LEGO wants to stay away from these types of licensing.
- Batmobile - NO (hope I'm wrong though)
- League of Legends - NO. I'm worried LEGO doesn't want to go with minifigs as the main idea. It's a huge can of worms. Cuusoo would be flooded with custom minifigs.
- Female Minifigure Set - YES
- Poptropica - YES
- ATLAS model - NO
- FTL - YES
- Road to Oz - YES
- Ghostbusters - YES PLEASE!

All my guesses are based if they can get license.
I like guessing games.

I got mine two days ago and I only saw the Palace Cinema in there. No other modular buildings. I mean I can see the firehouse and GE going, but surely Pet Shop and Town Hall have a few more years....Right? RIGHT? I don't have Town Hall yet. Been waiting on it to hit $150 at Walmart or Target or somewhere.

LEGO website doesn't show them as "Soon to be retired". I dunno how LEGO will manage with so much overlap of the modulars right now. LEGO stores can't put all the product on the shelves there's so many now. I'll be very upset if LEGO pulls the plug on GE and Pet Shop without any warning. I still need those as well.

I'm assuming that Ecto-1 will be around $70, and that would be ok.

It better be around there or higher. If it's around $40, there's no way we get all 4 minifigs with a good chance of slimer.

I thought the point of Cuusoo was to bring ideas that typically wouldn't be LEGO products to shelves. Also, to introduce non-LEGO buyers to LEGO and lure them in that way.

You should be OK with those, but you never know when resellers or some AFOL with a deep LoTR love may snap them up.

Thanks for the heads up. Definitely see that happening. Once something is deemed "short supply", a resell price tag with $$$ drives demand for the set.

Just picked up 70003 Eris' Eagle Interceptor. My first set of Chima. Uh oh. What will come of this is only written in the stars.

It's a cool looking set. Looks just like an eagle and aircraft. It's one of the better sets of Chima (I don't have many, but just based on pictures).

It comes out to $17 each for me. Hard for me to pay that much for each when I've been buying them on clearance for $7. That's probably why Series 4 isn't coming.

Depends how much you like the sets. Aftermarket prices will be much higher here in the states especially. Also, if you order more stuff, shipping cost per set goes down.

I hope it doesn't go too far. 10% discounts, VIP points, and nice staff are why I shop at LEGO store (oh, and the incentive giveaways). I can usually get stuff on sale or via Amazon for a bit cheaper. When you spend a few thousand a year each % off adds up.

I would think Lego would reverse course if people stop buying the larger sets as a result. If they don't gain enough from the 10% they are now getting in vs. the people who now will shop else where (or not at all) then they may switch back for coupons atleast.

Though the big thing will be whether all other sites line up with the policy. If Amazon or Target keeps letting it get discounted then their plan wont pan out for those who shop around first.

TRU has been like that for a long time actually. Anything they deem "Hard to Find" will not work for any BOGO or whatever promotions. Almost a year it feels.

But looking at the coupon I got very closely, it says it MAY not apply to hard to find items or exclusives. So, it might be store specific. That is mighty crappy if it doesn't work, because all I want right now are the exclusive sets.

EDIT: It is like one step forward, two steps back. They implemented free shipping, and it was good. But just as I start getting coupons, they restrict what it can be used on. LAME!

You bring up a good point. Perhaps it's to push those larger sets to retailers (via dropship or something). Target has been advertising some modulars in their LEGO aisles.

Lego says will focus more on fast-growing Asian markets

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/05/lego-results-idUSL6N0H11I020130905

Maybe we'll get Dragonball-Z or more Asian themed sets. Will suck if Asian themed sets are only available in that region.

EDIT: I hope this means China made LEGO will have the higher quality plastic LEGO usually uses. LEGO puts some chemical additive to their ABS granules. China wouldn't let LEGO ship those granules to China factories which I hope changes soon.

While on my route today i decided to hit a couple Wal-Marts in some out of the way places (bad part of town). Both of these Wal-Marts had by far the largest selection of discounted sets I've ever seen. Literally two full isles of Lego discounted from almost every line, mostly SW,LOTR and Super Heros, not much Monster Fighters unfortunately. Was really hoping for the train. Almost every set from the last year was discounted, they even had a 7327 for $60 but the box was beat up. Needless to say I went a little crazy with the credit card and I'm thinking about going back.

This is what I walked out with

Helms Deep - 89
Millenium Falcon - 99
Vamp Castle - 65
Quinjet - 40
Desert Skiff - 15
Captain America Bike - 9

And what I'm considering going back for...

x-wing - $40
Mines of Moria - 50
Goblin Battle - 69
Malevolence - 60
Fury class interceptor - 40
TONS of Lego Super heroes, almost every marvel set. Nothing looks too tempting aside from the Hulk set.

I wanted to grab a few Mines of Moria for trading/investing but there is so much I want to build right now that investing will have to wait till I'm caught up.

They need to steal whatever Nintendo license would be relevant to construction toys. Animal crossing sets, pokemon sets, zelda microscale dungeons, mario microscale levels.

Also some monster hunter beasts.

To complete the trifecta of not-so-great news of the day - LEGO will not be at NYCC.

The reason being floated around is that TLG had instead chosen to use their show budget to do the big Times Square X-wing reveal.

However, I have it on some authority that the real reason is that after seeing the chaos TLG has caused at SDCC two years in a row, and TLG's weak responses to the problem, NYCC organizers had chosen to ban LEGO from exhibiting there.

More to come, I am sure.

If that's true, I hope LEGO will learn their lesson. It's absurd that true fans miss out on those minifigs only for scalpers to profit.
