Lemmings follow viral TikTok to commit check fraud, owe thousands of dollars

Yesterday a Chase “glitch” went viral on TikTok where people could write a check and deposit it via the Chase app and then withdrawal the cash before the bad check bounced.

Now these idiots have 7 day holds on their accounts and massive negative balances (one guy owed over $40K).

Reason 847383 why TikTok needs to go away.

It's not TikTok's fault that we have a generation filled with complete dum-dums. We have gems like this and the Tide Pod challenge, among other things. It's people like this why we need warning labels to not eat or drink things that shouldn't be eaten or drank.

Why blame tiktok?

Why not just prosecute criminals?

Thats now how legitimate legal systems work. Both the promoter (the user) and the actual criminal actor are liable.

You can find all sorts of books and content of how to do crimes. We don't destroy that media.
Tiktok is a cancer that is poisoning the soul of society

Young idiots have been using this “hack” since checks were invented and unless their parents have money they can really fuck up their life.

A handful of morons doing it because of TikTok probably won’t make much of a dent. The bigger issue is just brain rot from scrolling video feeds all day.

It is not Tik Tok the problem, but the users, if you are stupid enough to do something like this you deserve to have 40k in debt.

We totally need an exam to be able to use Internet.

Yes, it's TikTok's fault and all other social media platforms that warped the perceptions and social interactions over the last 20 years. People were always stupid, but the platforms pushed it to 11, especially with the spread of stupid ideas.

Interesting move to put the blame on TikTok instead of the people with room temperature IQ who thought this was a good idea.

Tim Tok is definitely to blame, until it will regulate the fakes or stupidities like these or whatever they may be.

If a school manual teaches a student to kill his mother, would that school manual not be in any way to blame if that poor idiot does it?

People are responsible for their own actions, claiming the media or films or violent video games made you do it should result in a harsher sentence for being a moron.

This comparison is so bizarre I don’t know where to begin.

Every person is responsible for their own actions. That’s all this is and ever will be. These people decided to commit actual bank fraud. No one else but they themselves thought to do this. You think “TikTok made me do it” holds up literally anywhere? If any this is another shining example of how incredibly stupid some people are.

Im sure there will be a massive bailout of some sort for these fools....
Unfortunately this is the truth. Now the cars and shit that they've used this theft for will be repossessed but the whole thing will be a net loss and it will be subsidized by our tax dollars.

Because Chase shouldn't be blamed for their faulty security.
And the thieves shouldn't be blamed for their lack of self-control.

YOU need to pay

Exactly - "TikTok made me do it" will not hold, however you are underestimating the effect of someone growing up with social media from the age of 8-9, now 15 years later they are in their early to mid 20s, and they don't know any other world. This is equally the fault of school system not teaching people critical thinking and to always be sceptical.

to be fair tik tok is poison.
What are y’all doing with TikTok to find it so offensive.
My algorithm just shows some dance videos or funny videos and I flick through it maybe 10-15 minutes a day and I’m always guaranteed a laugh.

My Facebook is similar. It isn’t shows memes and Batman photos.

I’ve no idea what everyone’s done to there’s to make it so bad.

Never said Tik should be held responsible and the stupid fuckers should "not". Of course it's on them, and they should get it to the full extent of the jam, but if we just simply deny and close our eyes to the indisputable fact that these rotten, completely unregulated apps "are" part of the problem, we are ...in denial, massively.

Obviously, all of these factors play a role. Everything from social media to big government, and the education system lowering its standards, dumbing down kids, and teaching them to hate their own country by filling their heads with absolute nonsense, is churning out a generation of idiots. We live in a time where kids aspire to be influencers instead of pursuing something useful. A time where they don’t want to work but expect everything to be handed to them, making them brainwashed into preferring socialism over capitalism (and yes, I know capitalism isn’t perfect). They believe they’re victims in the freest country in the world and are being taught gender ideologies and critical race theory. White students are instilled with white guilt. They won't wake up until all of this nonsense starts affecting them directly. But from what I’ve been seeing lately, I think it’s finally starting to. Obviously, nothing is perfect, but the indoctrination of our youth is destroying them.

I saw one TikTok and the guy was like "Fuck Chase man".

Like, he expected them to just give him free 10s of thousands of dollars and live his life all jolly. 🤦‍♂️

It happened to my friends cousin who lives two towns over so you have to believe free money might come your way when someone says it's happened before.

Yes, he was convinced (as many people are) there is some huge secret to rich people being rich and if you can just discover it you will be rich as well.

You were using your card and your account to commit check fraud. All easily tracked and corrected.

I don't know what I expected, but I feel even less sympathetic than I thought I would.

On topic though, I don't think you can expect people to not go for it, I remember there was a news story in the UK where a cashpoint (ATM) was giving out double the requested amount. Once it was realised by people using it, an orderly queue formed with people politely taking their turn and then waiting for midnight to do it again when they'd have a new daily withdrawal limit to use.

The bank found out pretty quick and obviously knew who'd taken money out and got double and recouped.

Why blame tiktok?

I think in my story here, which was pre social media (🧓🥹), the only real difference is that if it happened today, people would be shrieking rolling around on the ground and throwing their money around for the purposes of some sort of viral video.

So, while the attempt at defrauding the bank is one thing, seeking social media fame is another. TBH, I think stealing from a bank is more respectable

So my verdict is: Yes, fuck social media. But feel free to rob the banks.

Yes, you can if people understood how modern banking works. Everything is recorded and can be reversed, it's just numbers on a spreadsheet. You don't have "aha, you made a mistake, I got to keep the extra money". The moment there is a problem the bank fixes it and then reverses all invalid transactions. There is no way this would ever work.
