I truly think she'd kill it as Storm and am not advocating for her on the basis of "this single recognizable black actor should play every single character that is black!"

The reason we're thinking young roy, is because Apocalypse is gonna be set in the 80's and in the movie timeline, Storm would be a late teen at the very most (though they can increase the age of course, they're not THAT consistent). Although if the "old" cast shows up again, this one (looks wise) or Angela would be great replacements

Well it also helps that she's actually African and is a proven actress. If you can think of a better one without doing open casting calls, by all means let us know.
Danai Gurira is definitely a good choice if you want to go a little older for sure.

The writing did her no service but she couldn't embody the role no matter what. She's a great actress in the right role, but this role wasn't ever going to be it.
I grew up with Storm and have a warrior spot for her. Edit: and I just forgot my avatar is Storm lol
I had no problems with Halle Berry because all of the prominent X-Women got the shaft in the movies with diminishing roles (Rogue and Storm) save for maybe Jean Grey. Mystique is recently lucky Jennifer Lawrence supernova'd. They just need a proper reboot or hell, a tv mini-series that's led by Marvel's most popular females that also happen to be X-Men. Fix what's never been highlighted with Storm, Rogue, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Psylocke, Jubilee, Kitty Pryde, and maybe even throw in Magik, X-23, and Pixie for some new blood.

I was thinking the star of Scandal Kerry Washington could possibly be a good Storm, and I think she's a fantastic actress, but she doesn't quite look like her. Like her features are perhaps too "girlish"? Either way I loved her in Django

But tbh, I think one of the things the previous movies absolutely NAILED was Jean, possibly even more so than Hugh Jackman's amazing portrayal of Wolverine and Ian Mckellan's phenomenal portrayal of Magneto. Famke Janssen is amazing and I just can't picture anyone else doing as good of a job in the role, she OWNED it

One of the reasons the x-men movies never connected with me is because they butchered a lot of my favorite characters. Especially Storm and Rouge.

Besides never really believing her portrayal of jean (always came across as much more lost and weak than she was in the comics imo) I'll never be able to look at her as anything other than fuckin Xena Onatop. Famke is hot to be sure but she aint got them acting chops man. doornail status.
Any of the listed beautiful ladies would make a fantastic storm. Lupita especially. But really any of them would be leagues better than the phoned in bullshit we got from Halle over the years.
Where is that commentary track link where snider or whoever was like "The lightning/toad line was supposed to be delivered all casual and cool. Not fucking deadpan stupid." ... uhg... terribly under-used her character in the movies as well. Like her best and only fucking trick is fog and summoning lightning takes like 5 minutes. Half the shit they have movie Storm charge up and cool guy pose for comic book Storm woulda done with her bare fuckin hands.

Okay, I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that I liked her as Storm. The only thing is that because the movies were essentially wolverine vehicles, certain characters got brushed to the wayside. I mean Storm shouldn't take so long to do things like fog and wind and shit like that. She's a very powerful mutant and could easily do more damage than Wolverine. I'm also super fucking pissed at how Phoenix was handled in the 3rd movie. Do I think Angela Basset could've been a better Storm, maybe, but I'm not upset that she wasn't.

Yeah, I don't think it's Halle's fault that movie Storm is such a disaster. Storm is the most "comic book-ish" of that main cast of characters, except Nightcrawler (and he was an even worse disaster). The whole tone of the movie didn't fit with Storm's demeanor; a nudity-loving, larger-than-life weather goddess who isn't afraid to cut a bitch - literally. Someone with such an overwhelming presence and style wasn't going to cut it with a generally more grounded take on X-Men that the movie presented. They couldn't even get her iconic blue cat-eyes right.
If they do a younger Storm, they can base it off the equally fun, but more realistic depiction of a teen Storm from Ultimate X-Men. That would be a nice trade-off between the movie's take on the franchise and Storm's comic book depiction.

Also, can I rant about how the other bad bitch of the X-Men universe, Emma Frost has been utterly mutilated in the X-Men movie verse? OMG how could they have treated her with such disdain. She's been handled far worse than any character in the franchise. Ugh January Jones as Emma was far far worst than you could ever say Halle was as Storm.

oh and since Apocalypse will take place in the 80s, if they don't do mohawk Storm, I'd love to see a
real life take on 90's big-hair Storm. I love Storm's current look most of all, but the 90's look that I grew up with from the comics and the poorly animated but amazing FOX cartoon has a special place in my heart <3
