Ah, I see :p

I hate when ignorant people turn discussions about human rights in Russia into anti-America, East vs. West issues. As if violating human rights gets a free pass on some cultures or something.

Hearing about russia just really makes my blood boil. Is there any chance of them stopping this bullshit?

On the other hand, why even bother using that app while in Russia? I figure nobody else is using it, considering.

I would say it's quite the opposite, the bigger the rejection and condemnation the more you need apps like that. It can lead to harrasment unfortunately, like they guys that are filmed, they answered personal ads planted by the homophobes.

And omg at Google, freaking awesome.

Good job Google

I saw this just a moment ago. I smiled. :) Indeed, good job Google.

(I'm waiting for the outrage and people claiming that homosexual lobby at Google tries to spread their gay propaganda -- because we know that it will happen)

You think there are no active gays in Russia? Not long ago there was a thread here on NeoGAF where Sochi Mayor stated there are no gay people in the city... even though there are several gay clubs in the city. :p

Not to mention, gay athletes.

I just saw a commercial for the stupidest movie I've ever seen. Noah. Fucking Noah. Starring Russell Crowe. Hollywood really is bereft of ideas.

As for the Google thing, I don't think that's an attempt to snub the Olympics. At least not intentional anyway.

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Hey man, it has Aranofsky at the helm and Emma Watson as well.

Can't be that bad.

They're trying to turn Noah into an action hero. This is the kind of thing that you would see as a skit on SNL or some show like it 20+ years ago and laugh thinking that Hollywood would never stoop so low. Hollywood has become the joke now.

Whenever someone tries to knock 80's movies and say that movies now are better, I'll just bring up this little gem to silence them.

While I agree that the premise is weird, I wouldn't judge the movie before seeing it (or at least reading few reviews). It's Aronofsky after all. I doubt he will turn Noah into a generic action movie.

Oh, of course there are, I guess I just would hope they would not risk their personal safety and well-being. But you're right, the app probably sees more use as a result of the persecution.

And do gay athletes really have time to meet randoms while competing?

While I'm all for protests about lgbt rights, I'm finding the "lol Sochi is so backwards" thing going around the web kind of mean spirited, the problem is not Sochi or the people who live there.

I'm pretty sure the athletes are hooking up with other athletes. The Olympics are just like a huge orgy of insanely fit people apparently.

I think it's making fun at the piss poor facilities that somehow costed $51 billion (the whole event did, but still, it's ridiculous). It creates a funny atmosphere when you have cheap buildings and Russian Engrish - I don't think anyone really makes fun about the people in Sochi.

Well, it's double-edged sword I would think. Due to the persecution, in person, trying to charm another man is a riskier than normal proposition; not only must they concern themselves with potential rejection, but they also most consider the, seemingly very real, threat of violence, exposure, and condemnation. To avoid the possibility of engaging in a socially unnacceptable activity, and not to expose themselves, they turn towards application similar to Hunter, Gaydar, Grindr, etc., where that same risk is not present. Unfortunately, this too carries the real "risk to their personal safety and well-being" as homophobes create fake accounts to lull gay individuals to an ambush. The internet is the safer route, in that you can try and screen the other individual prior to any actual meeting, but it carries with it the major downside that, because of the presence of homophobic and biggoted members creating their own accounts, people may be unwilling to actually reveal their personal details, which makes it hard to distinguish from somebody scared to reveal themselves, and somebody who doesn't wish to reveal themselves as a predator. Using them (the applications and similar networking sites) seems to be a method of living as openly as possible with your sexuality, trying to maintain a 'normal' sex-life, as free from potential oppression as one can, while trying to minimise the risk to their well-being (unfortunately, as we know, this is not always something that the individuals accomplish).

This is all from an outsider's perspective of course, focusing merely on the potential benefits and drawbacks to such services, perhaps the reality is different, but that is how I would view the use of them. Looking on Gaydar now, there are forty-three (just went back to confirm and there's now forty-one) people online within the Russian Federation as of this moment. The vast majortity are located within Moscow, a few in Sochi, and the rest seem to be rather scattered; while it's possible that other websites/applications are used more, it is still much smaller than I had expected, so I would think that there are a significant number of people who are unwilling to risk socialising over the internet.

You are indeed correct: ESPN

Whether that also applies for the Winter Olympics is unclear, but I'd imagine that it holds true,

After the Russian weddings thread I'm not so sure.

Russia is messed up no doubt but throwing every single Russian under the bus seems uncalled for, same thing in the "Sochi is hilarious" thread.

Well, that's a separate thread, and the pics are funny regardless of where they're from :p

BTW, I always get a "teehee" feeling when I say Putin. "Putín" acts as a variation of "puto" at least in Mexico, which is basically "faggot" in Spanish.

Finally, I'll be going on holidays tomorrow. One week in London and two in The Hague...
hopefully I'll meet some hot british guys.

FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!
I got sick so I couldn't drink it for the better part of 2 weeks. It was only a little while after I resolved to stop before the cravings subsided. Quitting cold-turkey has never worked for me before.

I used to be addicted to soft drinks years ago - I was going through, like, a 12 pack a day (sometimes more) - and it was just awful. I quit cold turkey as well and it, while extremely difficult, ended up being one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I'm pretty sure the athletes are hooking up with other athletes. The Olympics are just like a huge orgy of insanely fit people apparently.

Why couldn't I have been an Olympian? God.
If the Olympic Village is really one massive orgy, and has been for decades, then where the fuck are all the leaked sex tapes/pictures?????? That we haven't got a single piece of evidence makes me think these claims are somewhat exaggerated.

I'm unsure if there are other sources, the oldest link on it I can find is from a website called Towleroad. Just to point out it isn't "Grindr", but it is an equivalent application.

Oh fuck this shit. I hope there ends up being a stronger pushback with guys slutting-it-up with each other even more fervently under that insane regime.

On the other hand, why even bother using that app while in Russia? I figure nobody else is using it, considering.

Actually that type of backwards environment would be the place to use it. It's discreet.

Not sure... to me it also sound like the perfect app as bait for some gaybashing...

Well, risk attached to meeting a potential guy is unfortunately nothing new for gays. (It's still relatively a recent thing to feel like you can go out and meet up with other 'mos, at least here in the States without potential physical danger.)

Still, you can't keep a good manhoe down I say!

I have never heard the term "manhoe" before o_o LOL

I skipped the opening ceremony of the Olympics, as I forgot that NBC stretches that shit out across 4 hours and who even has the time for that? Anyway, did the US team end up wearing rainbow ribbons or whatever?

I have not .Really want to. There is plenty of matthew mcconaughey from Mud, Lincoln Lawyer to Dallas Buyers Club that I want to see.

I usually love the Olympics. (The only time I really watch sports besides tennis.)

But these Olympics just make me feel sad and frustrated.

Yes! I get to go to my
highly edible
friend's house next week!

It's the first time I've been to someone's house in at least 6 years.

I maxed out at 3 liters a day several years ago. Most of the time it was about 1.5-2. My gums already look bad though.

Boycotting 'em. Fuck the hosts and their moral equivocating for pogroms.

Basically in the same boat. The athletes (that give enough of a shit) are doing their best for our sake and making their support known to the world, which I appreciate, but I refuse to give the sponsors money for this debacle on principle.

OK I've never followed the winter Olympics, winter is an strange concept to me because I 've never truly experienced it, but these are really incredibly handsome people :p and I'm not bisexual but I'm having my doubts heh

I was all for boycotting, but seeing the athletes so exited and supportive in the only way they can makes me feel bad, the Olympics at the end are not about that f*cking bastard Putin or the corrupt OIC, it's about athletes, I just can't boycott that.

I will not see anything about this Olympics though, seriously winter Olympics for me are B grade Olympics, but this will probably be the biggest Olympics I'll support, that is, until 2016 when the freaking summer Olympics happen in my current city :p

And you people are making me feel really old by not knowing who Casanova was, like seriously? thats general culture :/

How old are you that that makes you feel old?! Like 18th century old?

Like you said that seems like general cultural knowledge, I'm not sure how age factors into it :p

haha well casanova was the kind of terminology used frequently in my childhood and adolescence :/ this was common terminology, even if you didn't know who he was.

But now it feels ancient :( kids this days using "hoes" and the like...

Ok I have very romanticized ideas about old terminology, this of course makes me old
I'm 32 btw.

Oh, I didn't go back far enough. Now I feel old too. Is that really a thing people don't say anymore? D:

But it seems like "hoe" shouldn't be a synonym for the Lothario thing, there's being promiscuous and then there's being a seducer! Or I guess a 'charmer' in a more benign case.

I can tell you don't go out much because in this day an age no one seduces anymore, besides going to the gym and using growth hormone injections and looking hot. It's incredibly sad, and I was talking about exactly that with a friend of mine.. damn, kids these days.

Yes, old man yells at cloud, out of touch etc, etc :p I seriously feel so freaking late to the party, you hear the stories of your parents or uncles and how they swoon over their loved ones, we were talking with a friend of mine how her uncle walked on foot 10 km just to meet her girlfriend, which eventually become her wife, the story of my parents is perfectly fit for a telenovela, and even simple things like a serenade, which I guess is a completely alien concept to new generations, it makes me feel nostalgic about that stuff. I guess, meeting the opposite (or same) sex was not a simple task in the olden days, and now it's so easy that people really don't put an effort.

I'm just rambling, forget anything I said :p I've seen some pretty cute things in this very lgbt threads hehe, but still, those kind of details are something you do after you've met(and likely slept) with someone, not before.
