The class itself was actually less about yoga philosophy than I would like, which I guess is a lot of stuff, because the meaning of yoga is actually extremely broad. They have yogas of interpreting text and yogas of debate and stuff, it seems endless. I guess the word yoga itself has the connotation of union with God. and India is a really religious country, you have the sense that union with God might be reached through practically anything, so there is a yoga for practically everything.
But this class was mostly about how Yoga in the west is a transnational project with a sort of constructed historicity to it. For example in medieval Hatha yoga texts there are only about 15 yoga asanas in existence, but somewhere in the 19th and 20th centuries in the post-colonial period the Hatha yoga asanas exploded to number in the hundreds. So yoga as we know it (the postural practice) really isn't this ancient thing at all, or even wholly a product of India. There was a lot of talk about cultural appropriation and consumer culture and stuff, it was pretty interesting, but it didn't get as much into ancient texts and stuff as I wanted because I usually think that stuff is a little bit more fun.

I'm going for philosophy right now, I find it's a really fun major. I actually had some trouble with philosophy classes before, but there was a sudden change that happened where I realized recently that I was familiar with enough ideas in my own head that I could use that to try to understand a lot of other ideas I wasn't already familiar with.
It was almost like I already had a ready way of decoding what these people were talking about, by relating it to stuff that I already knew. The fun thing about ideas in themselves is they're just ideas, anyone can play with them, you just have to be critical enough to actually pin some important stuff down and not let everything fly. And I think when I realized that I realized philosophy could be a lot of fun, because it's not about 'getting it right' and being absolutely faithful to these dead Greek dudes or whatever, it's actually this fluid thing that you can take part in and exercise some creativity.
What about you, you mentioned that you were in school, what are your interests?

I'm an English major. My favorite is 19th century British lit. I think philosphy classes would benefit lots of the people I know. Humanities classes in general are really important, but sadly nobody cares about them anymore.

I agree. Often I think it's the humanities that give you a framework for how to really think about things. In a way I think they better represent the classic ideal of what Universities are for. It's only recently with the emphasis on STEM that you get the impression that a university education is like a glorified or higher-class tradesperson degree, that is too specialized and too tailored to public demand to be what I'd normally think of when I think of higher education. But maybe that's just my own elitism showing, lol

I didn't know we had another English major in here. I love 19th century British Lit too. Some good ones in 18th and earlier, but most of my favorite stuff is 19th century Brit Lit or 20th century American Lit. A few good ones in 19th American lit too.

I think my favourite might be Milton? Taking a mythological symbolism class made me realize how much of a complete writing dummy I am compared to the greats, lol. Sometimes it's kind of fun admiring people for doing things that I could never be talented enough to do, ever.
Anywhere she wants to be, really. Plenty of things to suck, knead, bite, twist, fondle, and love on.

I like Paradise Lost, but I think if you have no idea what is going on it can go over the heads of most people. Its not as bad as some of the early stuff though. I was originally a creative writing option but switched to the literature side.
I have one short story and lots of poems. Most of which I don't like. My newer stuff is a lot better in my opinion. I am actually writing a poem based on the fallen angels of Paradise lost but stopped half way through.

That's why I go for amateur, but it always happens that I switch over to HBO late at night for a laugh when nothing else is on. Then I get roped in somehow and end up fapping to it. They had this nice Spanish language one last year. I guess that was a show, though, and not a feature film.
