Lightning gets Aeirth (FFVII) costume for Lightning Returns

But cameo costumes in a Tales of games don't feel typical of the character or fit the character in whatever Tales of game that has them at all. Like in Xillia, none of the cameos make sense or fit the character, especially the pre-order ones for Milla and Jude. I don't think they should either though since its a cameo costume and not really supposed to make sense or be logical in any way but I don't understand this reasoning that they should fit the character either.
I think Xillia was their way of trying new things out given that the game had like four costumes. But typically the cameo costumes do feel rather fitting (ie: I'm thinking of the Graces cameo costumes, for instance). The preorder costumes, I felt, did fit Milla and Jude, simply for the sake of being demonstrative of main characters from the designers' first main games and protags -- though Milla's likely fit better than Jude's. The other cameo costumes seemed to be okay, but weren't as best-fitting as the Graces ones were. Even then, the skillsets or the stats of the cameo costumes seemed to fit with the characters' general skill/stat traits (ex: Dhaos with Milla because she's a spellcaster and magic knight).

Even then, it just feels kind of jarring to see Lightning in a costume for a character that doesn't seem to suit her or her default skillset at all. The Locke costume, for example, fits because she's a speedster/evader. These two costumes are more evocative of slower characters.

I am not merely thinking of just personality. I'm thinking of the skillsets and stats. Even if Lightning is a bit of a chimera in terms of her skills, she's first and foremost a Magic Knight or a speedster swordswoman with quick magic on her side. Thus characters who tend to stand still or attack with staves/heal just don't seem fitting for her.

Regardless, nothing against cameo costumes. Go nuts because that's the sort of thing I like to see. Just... make it fit with the vision of her overall skillset.

Aww, it's just a joke because at this point..it really seems like a barbie simulator. Nice threat though, got me shaking.

He's not joking Junior, it's called thread whining and it's bannable according to the rules.

Edit: No need to shake now, that was quick.

It's fanservice. Meh?

I mean, seriously, why get upset? We've seen Lightning in exposed thongs and bikinis; we know she's had a breast enlargement; we can dress her in bunny ears, cat ears, have a moogle on her head, etc; she does sexy poses after slaughtering people... this game is fan service for the million or so people who will buy the game. We've known this for a long while. This is honestly a case of "if you don't like it, it honestly wasn't made for you". There's no point in getting mad.
Getting mad is what the Internet does best, let it do its thing.

As much as I like Lightning, she doesn't have the body to work Tifa's FFVII outfit. Maybe her AC one because they toned down her breasts for some reason and she isn't all curvy like she used to be.

I wouldn't at all surprised if we eventually get her AC outfit. It's a popular one, and with good reason.

Well this costume makes some sort of sense if you consider the Japanese voice actress. Both Aerith and Lightning are voiced by the same voice actress, Maaya Sakamoto, in Japan.

Also, I just realized that the orange Aerith outfit makes her look like Hope.

The pre-order Xillia costumes make sense for the game. Xillia is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the series and the game brings together the teams and artists that have traditionally worked on different games. As the main character designed by Fujishima, Jude gets the Cress costume and Millia gets the Stahn costume for being the main character designed by Inomata.

EDIT: Dark Schala beat me to it!

This so much. It's like an awkward cosplay.

And yea, she had that stare the whole game.

I immediately thought to myself "I dunno, I could have sworn that I wasn't nearly as bothered about this in XIII, even in my subsequent playthrough," but I think Espada might have touched on it.

Aye, I noticed this while I was playing XIII (and then in the subequent media afterwards). She winds up looking dumb, so when they started sexing her up (or at least trying to) and giving her new outfits it just falls flat. She might as well be a mannequin.

I guess I was more forgiving of Lightning's lack of expression in general in XIII because it was either justified by the story, or she only chose to express emotion at very particular moments. But then again, she hasn't really been a character since XIII/Dissidia as opposed to a force of nature that solves the world's problems (let's see if LR changes that up at least).

It's just so jarring to see Lightning do all of these sexy poses, Yuna's polite bow, Aeris's kinda meek (albeit deceptive at least according to the original FFVII) appearance, while Lightning is just "*BLANK SCOWL STARE*" I guess that's just a problem when you set out deliberately not trying to over-sexualize her in her debut in XIII, just to rebound to making her bust size variable depending on the costume in LR. But I digress.

Ohhh, ok what you said before makes a bit of sense now. I was thinking that you was coming at this from a personality angle. I can honestly say I never thought of it from a skillset perspective before. Although in Lightning's case she's supposed to be everything in this game compared to how she was in FFXIII, which was a more Magic Knight-ish way.

Just stop please, I feel like they're trying way too hard to shove Lightning down our throats it's almost disgusting, just let it go and focus on the other FFs.

"Do not talk about the game you are making. You are forcing it down my throat."

Does this sentiment apply to any other games? There is a ton more GTAV visibility on GAF right now, are you furious at the attention it is receiving?

Square just [re-]released XIV, and XV is in the pipeline. They are working on the other games. Lightning Returns is the next game to be released with Final Fantasy in the title. It is five months out, XV is like 40 months out. They are going to to talk about it. The other option is talking about nothing. Lightning Returns is not stealing attention from other FFs, there ARE no other FFs.

So much backseat modding in this thread!

I think this is actually kind of amusing and fun but I suppose having only the XIII series this generation has people on edge. Only another year
or two or three
until XV!

I actually think the cameo costumes are a good thing because they'll provide maybe different character animations and faster ways of fighting and holding/attacking with the weapon or spells

I guess you could say that the Yuna/Aeris costumes might enhance spellcasting, but I wonder if they'll go that far with it. I just find that the costumes might be restrictive in comparison to her other spellcasting outfits that we've seen already.

I'm mad at the fact that they're not focusing on the meat of the game but pure fanservice, mentioning Lightning's cup size was ridiculous, mentioning CoD and even Skyrim... Come on! Hell, we're even getting a third entry in a series most people didn't ask for.

SE needs to stop fucking around and announce Tifa's costumes for Lightning already.

Cowgirl outfit, normal suspenders outfit and AC outfit. Obviously with bodily adjustments so it doesn't look off on her.

What would you like them to show?
Besides, XIII-2 ended on a cliffhanger; it would be a sin to end it like that.

Wow, i have the same thought :D

Jesus Christ just make a hentai dating sim with Lightning and give her a few dozen wardrobes to wear and call it a day.

At this point she's going to have more looks then fucking Megaman before the generation is over.

They have talked at length about the meat of the game. Cup size is ridiculous, sure, but mentioning games that inspired it is ridiculous?

These couple costume videos have not negated the rest of the game's coverage. Have you watched the actual trailers and gameplay footage? There was a recent 10 minute GameSpot gameplay video that I enjoyed. The only "focus" being put on these costumes is by fanatical GAF members that identify them as the worst thing since Hitler Bread. If you want the focus to be on other things, talk about the other things! The costume trailer does not need the attention that PEOPLE are giving it! It's just a stupid costume! It only takes focus away from the game if you let it.

They are focusing on costumes because costumes are the core of the battle system? The fact that some of them are cameo does not change that. And honestly the latest videos they released at TGS were all about exploring the world of the game and knowing the maps and monsters you fight. You are just seeing what you want to see. And lets not talk about the cup-size comment and how ridiculously out of proportion it was taken over here. They never focused on that, and you know it. They were asked, they answered and thats it.

Maybe they might give her some more stronger support spells with the outfits that are restricting like that to make up for her lack of maneuverability, if there end up being any restrictions. I did noticed she doesn't move around as freely when she is using some magic focused class compared to a melee class in some of those other videos but that might be due her using magic and not getting all in the enemies face.

Putting Lightning in old FF character garb just isn't working for me at all. If anything, it's just upsetting and creating an uncanny valley-like effect.

I thought a fan asked Toriyama questions about her noticeable breasts enlargement which is why he mentioned it.

I thought a fan asked Toriyama that which is why he said it.

There's always the option to not answer it. I mean, someone could ask Sakamoto where Samus Aran's beauty mark is really located, but it doesn't mean that we really need that much information about the character.

I actually appreciate Toriyama being open about that, mostly because a lot of developers wouldn't go that far and I like knowing a bit extra about characters these people work 9 to 5 or even more on. Dunno if I'm saying this right but it puts a more human face to people behind the scenes instead of lame PR speak.

Yes, I get that Lightning is attractive from an objective standpoint, but holy fuck, Toriyama!

Why don't you focus on improving her CHARACTER instead of HER ASSETS!
