Limited Run Games - Putting digital games into your hands

Wait: is there going to be a Vita version of Saturday Morning RPG too? Not just a PS4?

I didn't even realize the Vita was getting Saturday Morning RPG, let alone a physical copy through Limited Run.

And I know EVERYTHING about the Vita.

I think they might mean two purchase times. One for Australia and US

Indiebox does it all the time and they have developed a very successful business model that has grown in revenue and sales with each subsequent release. It's far more risky for the publisher to pay for copies of a game that may never sell than it is to reduce some of that uncertainty by knowing that they have X number of subscribers who have already paid and will be receiving the next release regardless of what it is. All you would have to do is open a preorder window for a set amount of releases for a couple of weeks and close it off on a date certain. The releases themselves don't have to be specific games, just a promise that the subscriber will receive X games over the next six months or year for the price, just like Indiebox does.

I agree that there are some logistical challenges, but I don't agree that the risk is greater, especially since they presumably have agreements in place with the developers whose games they are releasing and there is no more risk of a developer pulling out if they order a set amount than if they take blind preorders. Similarly, if a batch of games is bad, that's just as risky if Limited Run is fronting that money as it is if subscribers have fronted that money. In either case, Limited Run could be on the hook for the full amount unless the manufacturing facility is at fault.

The Indiebox business model doesn't work for us, we have to order directly from Sony and we have to order a minimum number of units. Indiebox can make just what they need. The risk is greater for us and the pre-order system doesn't work for our business model. There is a post a little further back explaining what we go through to get all of this done.

I think with the way we will be handling future releases getting a copy won't be as big of a problem and we will continue to learn from each release.

Respectfully, what I am suggesting is a hybrid model. You allow longer term subscriptions for people like myself who will commit to buy all of your releases for a period of 6-12 months sight unseen and then you still do an individual sale for each new title just before release like you are doing now. If anything, this would allow you a bit more certainty as to what the order quantity should be up front since you would have a minimum of a few hundred orders for each title consistently for the period of the subscriptions and then you would only have to estimate what the open sale quantity should be. It gives you a massive influx of capital up front and still allows you flexibility down the road to place an order that makes sense given what the developer and you agree is the likely demand.

As for Indiebox, I think you are underestimating the amount of work that goes into each release. While the actual duplication of the USB sticks can be done at a lot of facilities, they still have to have cardboard boxes designed and made for each release, they have to have individual pieces of swag made for each release and they do all of the box assembly and distribution themselves, including shrinkwrapping. So, while I imagine that Sony and their authorized duplication facilities can be tricky to work with, I would imagine they send you a finished product and then you can focus on the sale, processing and mail out.

When I made my post about Indiebox, I wasn't specifically referring to them when I said that console releases are more difficult. I know they put a ton of work into their releases, and it definitely shows (I have the last 12 or so boxes); however, Indiebox's production challenges lie in their extras (packaging, pack-in goodies/feelies, etc.). In our case, we can literally have a release pulled out from under us if Sony releases a new minimum SDK or a game can't get through QA in time. We have someone at the gate saying yes or no - Indiebox controls every aspect of their production cycle. They choose if something is ready or not, we don't have that luxury. :(

The unfortunate thing is, we really can not guarantee a release will happen every month (or even happen at all - what if a dev abandons a project during the final stretch?). We don't know if our developers will decide to push back for more polish - or if they'll have issues in QA with Sony. We don't know when Sony will say a certain SDK is no longer valid. There's too many unknowns in our production cycle that Indiebox does not have to contend with. Preorders/subscriptions are just too risky. I really wish we could offer them, but with so many unknowns it's just not a good idea for us or our customers.

So is the Vita version of Saturday Morning RPG being released at the same time? (and I assume it has its own separate run of 1980 copies?) Or is it coming at a later date?

PS4 will come first, we don't currently have enough capital to produce both at the same time. Once Saturday Morning RPG sells through we'll be able to do simultaneous releases (as it will provide us the capital we need).

The run on the Vita version may end up above 2,000. We would have increased the PS4 run as well, but we already announced the number and want to stick with it.

Ah ok, sounds awesome. I'm mainly in it for the Vita games so at least if I'm unable to snag a copy of the PS4 release its not the end of the world. Here's hoping that you do sell through the 1980 copies, I'm sure you'll have no problem :)

Do a poll for each release to get an idea of the size of the print run. A vote where you put a dollar or two down is taken more seriously than a free vote, and it goes towards a real item in your shop, the protective case.

I assume LRG has to go with more simpler Indy titles due cost of bigger games. After you all buy them out a few times, I'm sure they'll be able to get bigger name brands.

When is the patch for the digital version landing? I could have sworn I already asked that in here, but I don't see it.

Some of the risk you're defining exists regardless of whether you're doing pre-orders or not.

Oh, absolutely. That's why I specified an amount they were comfortable fronting for. It's one thing risking, say, $10k, knowing the very fact it's limited will likely cause it to sell out. It's another to take other people's money in hand upfront - potentially more than you'd ever risk on your own... but if something goes wrong, you're still the one responsible.

In my experience, preorders on niche products are terrible indicators of demand -beyond- those preorders. Sometimes it's a sign there's a ton of real demand out there, and sometimes the entire niche bought in during the preorder.

Just got my Breach & Clear copy from the post office. I had to pay my dues, but it's finally in my hands.

At least you got yours safely and at least it's somewhat reliable in Brazil. I have no idea where mine is and I live in an important city where they handle this stuff "best"! I wouldn't mind paying taxes if the service was reliable, I'm scared for my 1 of 1500 copy :(

Do this for Radiant Silvergun on the 360 arcade and you'd make a lot of folks happy. The original was limited print in japan only and they go for several hundred dollars a pop. Make a physical copy of the arcade port and it'd mean a lot to shmup fans.
Seconded. Shmup fans are the kinda people that double or triple dip for physical copies.

I thought Limited Run Games had marked all international packages down?
Congrats on scoring your first LRG game. ;-)

Package was labeled as U$20 overall, they charged me for that. Still, that's a lot better than if it was U$40.

Sorry to hear that, I hope you get your copy safely and soon.

If you guys see any games on this list that you'd be interested in seeing released in a physical form let me know!

I (Douglas) will be at PSX scouting new games and promoting LRG!

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015...perience-2015-the-big-list-of-playable-games/

Vita, Vita, Vita, Vita, Vita:

-Day of the Tentacle (and, more importantly, Grim Fandango. Such a collector's game.)

-Salt and Sanctuary
-Severed (Guacamelee, too)

-Eitr
-Death's Gambit

For those last two, plug for Vita while you're at it. Lots of Vita fans already do on Twitter. Eitr sounds like a lock - the only thing prevent it is limited resources. Sounds like it will get a delayed release.

Top priority for new indie games:

Read Only Memories
VA-11 HALL-A
Heart Forth Alicia
Darkest Dungeon

Would love to get this old indies:

Hotline Miami 1+2
Fez
Super Meat Boy
Rouge Legacy
OlliOlli 1+2

Vita, Vita, Vita, Vita, Vita:

-Day of the Tentacle (and, more importantly, Grim Fandango. Such a collector's game.)

This too!

Just wanted to say you guys are doing God's work.

I'm afraid no Sony requests at the time, but if you were able to get the Nintendo approval, (or if they're eventually made on PS3/PS4/Vita) I would love to get physical versions of this fucker's games:

From that list, I'd be interested in:

BroForce
Chasm
Crypt of the Necrodancer
Darkest Dungeon
Day of the Tentacle Remastered
Moon Hunters
Nuclear Throne
Salt and Sanctuary
Severed

All Vita, all day. Darkest Dungeon would probably be the hypest, if it had to be only one.
