$500 is like 1 or 2 light lunches to the multi-millionaire Seattle-ite Valve employees, they're probably very confused by the concerns and blowback to their pricing hints.

Well what is a better pre-built option if it say launches at $600? Checking Walmart you are looking at a Ryzen 5 5700G and no dedicated GPU in the $500 range. In the $700 range you can get a 5060.

Those prebuilts come up with Windows. How many people do you think are familiar with Linux, or even care to learn when they grew up with Windows in their household since childhood.

If you're spending that low for pc gaming then just get a PS5. Atleast it will play battlefield 6 better than that 6 core shitmachine.

I'm going with niche, rather than totally DOA, but it's a good point. Most people are fine with putting up with Windows 11's bullshit (or so I think...maybe...or maybe not), so the selling point of "it's a PC, but without Windows!" - while attractive to some - isn't enough to ensure widespread adoption.

$600 or less seems a great way to garner a strong install base. Otherwise, I doubt anyone who doesn't already have a PC is going to jump on this. Might as well just buy a Steam Deck.

What is console pricing? Are we talking launch PS5/Xbox? Switch 2? Or, next gen? We have no idea what next gen console pricing is going to be, I expect sticker shock.

I mean, losing certain Windows functions on a handheld isn't a sacrifice, but it is on a desktop. Valve is putting a product on the market that isn't as good as a PC (like a gaming laptop is) and isn't as good as a console, either in price or performance.

The Steam Cube is a product aimed at those who aren't familiar with gaming laptops, because at the end of the day, a laptop is a real computer with access to the Adobe suite and everything else the consumer might want , no need for makeshift solutions. Steam Machine is a limitation you know it.
 
And? Linus can be disappointed all he wants, his opinions are pretty moot considering bringing up a disc drive for the Steam machine, lol. PCs were forcefully separated from discs a long time ago, why would you even bring up something like that in the present day? It makes no sense.

Too many people are looking at the Steam Machine as if it's a "new powerful console", it's not. It's a PC that's intended for spaces that aren't a desktop (though it can be used for that as well, of course). The Steam page for it refers to it being a PC 3 times. People docked the Steam Deck to use it more like a desktop/living room PC, so to them, this felt like a good opportunity to make stationary hardware while making it beefier than the Steam Deck (6x according to them). Which can and will sound enticing to quite a few people even without knowing the price, especially those that don't own a PC, but have a Steam Deck. Or just don't have either and are curious about diving into PC/Steam.

We still don't know the price, but I'd imagine the Valve is going to look at things realistically. I mean, they kicked off the handheld PC trend and while there are stronger handhelds out ATM Steam Deck continues to remain on the Top Sellers list at $399.99. 🤷‍♂️
 
I would never play PC games with a machine that has lower specs than a console, unless that machine is quite cheap. And that should be the whole point of the Steam Machine: low to mid tier specs for a great price.

The absolute maximum should be 500. It's not worth it otherwise, save up and buy something better.

Hardly matters to console gamers.

This thing needs to compete with the console market to be relevant, and having an infinite amount of random Steam games won't matter much, because it's not like we are not getting all the games we want on PS5 and Series. I can't name a single game available on Steam, that I want to play, and that is not Series.

And there are also games available on Series that are not on Steam, on top of it...

If its not going to be cheap, they should've gone for rdna4 and 16 gb vram. For a bit extra.

Dont understand the point of something kind of expensive but not being useful for latest games.

That's not "PR". PR (public relations) is what I posted. Some of the media are saying this is a PC with console-like experience. That's accurate. If anyone is saying this is a console like a PS5 or Xbox then they are misinformed.
