I thought it was a separate pool but if it isn't then I certainly understand the depth.

Can't remember the exact reason, but it has to be deep enough to allow waves to dissipate off all the solid surfaces. It's the same reason the waves flow over the sides of the walls at the sides of the pools, to stop reflections and ensure swimming in any lane is as even as possible.

I figured there was some sort of reasonable explanation because otherwise the pool seems like it is twice as deep as necessary.
