Team GB's approach seems to be: Jack of all trades, master of none.

Unfortunately, the other nations either have the money to train to be the best at most sports or have realised their skills lie in specific sports, and are consequently turning the host nation out.
US seems to be competitive in just about everything except men's soccer

Have we invented the host disadvantage?

I tell you guys what, in terms of venue, atmosphere, setting and competition the Beach Volleyball has been the best of the games so far IMO.

Loved watching it live up to midnight last night. Crowd seem so much into it.
Yeah, it always stands out amongst the rest. Even in 08 the all around atmosphere in comparison to most of the other sports was pretty glaring.

Fencing: Men's Individual Sabre (round of 32)

Piste 2: Nicolas Limback GER v Adam Skrodski POL

I'm happy we've entered in as many sports as possible. Medal haul is still important, but I will be prouder of a surprise gold than the expected ones.

Still only day 2 anyway. Not sure what you were expecting

But these are sports we rarely medal in? Our strengths are always rowing, cycling and sailing - definitely early days.

Part of the problem is lucky fluke medals like the swimming ones. I'm so downheartened right now I'm willing to bet Adlington will win sweet fuck all. BBC is barely getting behind her, it's all "Oh this isn't her best event, everyone else is good".

Jesus Im trying to get some sleep before the Mexico game. Its pretty ridicolous how serious Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, and a large portion of the contestants are taking olympic football.

Mexico only really has two real chances of winning a medal, diving and taekwondo, but the only thing you hear about is the olympic football team.

It always sucks to see us get beat in anything but our strengths are yet to come. The road race was the only event so far where we expected a medal, it didn't happen, no point in dwelling on it. Hopefully Wiggins can do well in the time trial and then we do well in the velodrome.

I'm not sure the swimming medals are flukes - it seems Adlington is genuinely good. Guess we'll see how today goes. I think it's good the media don't overhype prospects as this only leads to disappointment and frustration.

Is taekwondo still in the Olympics? I dont see it on any of the lists?

Let's do this! Gabon, watch out!

Elsa did pretty well in gymnastics despite an injury in one of her fingers too. :) And I hope the female archery team does well today. The male got fourth place yesterday. :(

He didn't even want to compete this year until ~9 months ago when he started training.

Anyone know why Brazilians have their first names on their jerseys?
that's what I mean. If you don't want to be here, go away.

Hopefully I'm wrong though and he's really giving his best.

It was really the Cav hype that got everyone deflated. Saying it was the strongest team ever, Tour de France winners and the best sprinter in the world... then no medal. I have to admit it got me depressed after getting all excited from the opening ceremony and felt like we would win nothing, not even in sport we were dominant it. A lot of defeats in tennis as well, where we did have some able players. The most positive sporting news we had yesterday was Hamilton getting pole in Hungary.

Have to say that i don't think we would do as well in cycling as we did in Beijing though, that was a bit too amazing. And I agree that UK does spread itself thin on sports, probably because it invented so many... and trying to be the best in football, rugby, cricket, tennis, golf... etc all at the same time for such a small country, just won't happen.

They had the game won against the Italians!!!

Jugar como nunca y perder como siempre!

Australian media really ramping up the talk about this Male 100m relay, it's getting annoying. We saw what happened to the Americans in Sydney, let's not make the same mistake (too cocky).

At least we may win this.

They have the money and more importantly have a different attitude toward competitive sports. Just look at Australia: They're a much smaller country (population-wise) but are just as good if not better than GBR.

I don't know what you guys were expecting? We only had one serious medal chance yesterday and two serious ones today. We aren't doing that badly, the swimming performance is up on a like-for-like basis, the gymnasts are through to the group finals for the first time in 88 years along with 5 individual finalists and Louis Smith was the highest qualifier for the pommel horse.

The rowers all look in great form, and the cycling has yet to start in earnest, once the velodrome opens up there will be a serious medal haul from Team GB with the likes of Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton favourites in almost every event they are entered in.

So we suck at Handball and Volleyball, big deal. We entered those because the host should have an entry into all Olympic sports, very little money was spent and our main events have yet to come. Where we are in trouble is track and field events, as a nation prepare to be embarrassed as we win just two or three medals and finish below the likes of Kyrgyzstan on the Athletics medals table.

Should have a pretty good shot in the women's road race as well. Not sure what form Cooke is in mind you(or if she's even the intended/designated medalist).

why? He's still fast enough and didnt take anyone's spot away. Anyway it wont matter in the end because Phelps will still win multiple medals / golds.

We're in for gold and silver for the women's road race as we have two awesome sprinters! Hopefully the women learn from yesterday's mistakes and either get to the back of a breakaway group or ensure that under 10 riders are able to breakaway.
