So are people really serious about accusing the 15 year old girl from China of cheating because she was extremely fast?

Yeah it's funny because nobody says the 17 year old from USA who won gold cheated. Wait the Chinese girl is 16, the Lithuanian(i think) girl is 15.

I know it's unfair to accuse some athletes of doping, but does anyone else find that 15 yr old lithuianian girl winning the gold earlier this evening a bit suspect?

That's not to take away from silver/bronze medalists. It's a HUGE accomplishment either way and they should be proud of themselves. But there's no competitor that gets 2nd and isn't kicking themselves for not having just that little bit more in the tank to get the win.

I disagree.

Its probably rare but if you were not expecting to content and come out with a silver. I doubt that crosses your mind. Often times they KNOW the person who beat them is better. Some competitions people know the favorite is so good that they are really competing for silver.

Bloody ticket website is a joke.

it accepted my details for some athletics tickets. Said I reserved them asking for card details. Put my card details within the time limit, pressed accept and it went back to the log in screen.

I secured opening ceremony tickets ten days before it happened by noticing that the website had updated and them phoning them. Much more effective than relying on the website.

Still took two tries, mind.

Ya know, the IOC should give Shin a good sportsmanship medal like they did in 2008 for that one runner who got screwed by a fan.

Becky Adlington was *ecstatic* about her bronze. I'd suspect the same was true for our male gymnasts.

Woop got some tickets. 6th August men's volleyball. Italy v Bulgaria and GB v Argentia.

As British and Italian great for me. Disappointed I couldn't get the woman's though.

I could be wrong but didn't the Chinese girl come out of nowhere? Missy has won a bunch of hardware internationally. Not the same situation at all imo.

(doubt she actually cheated myself)

It doesn't matter to me if she did or not, but I honestly don't find it out of the realm of possibility that China would do what it needed to secure gold medals and ensure their place on the world stage. China (or rather the government) aren't exactly known for their honesty and respect for human rights.

It doesn't matter, age or gender doesn't mean anything.
Yes it does.

So, browsing the nbcolympics.com site I have to wonder, during the first days they didn't have any 2012 medal table on the front page, and now they have one, but only showing US medals? Well at least they added the medal winners of the day, but still, I bet once US goes first in overall medals they will put a ranking out.
They did put a table out the first two days.

It has to do with something which is really sad but I won't mention it, it's still not great to see that it still exists.

In some sports and events yes they should be able to compete against eachother.

I have to admit, I've never quite been able to understand why shooting is segregated. But then I know little about shooting, so maybe there's a good reason.

Are the various horse events the only ones with no strict gender rules?

Yes, but USA Basketball threw away their bronzes after 2004 and silver in the men's 4 x 100 relay was a huge letdown for USA this year. Obviously if you outperform expectations you're going to be happy. But going back to the original discussion at hand -- whether overall medal count should be determined by golds or total medals -- I stand by my opinion that all medals should be counted but not weighted equally. Silvers and bronzes are great accomplishments, especially for the underdogs, but that's not just as good as being the absolute best in the world.

Here's the thing: China do absolutely with 100% fact use their full financial muscle to get all of the best international talent to train their own team. For that reason they will more than likely continue to dominate international sporting events for the foreseeable future.

It becomes less fun and interesting when there is little chance of anyone else winning.

The amount of money they spend doesn't mean anything, the person can train the hardest but if they don't show up that day and win all of that money and training doesn't mean anything, it's up to the individual at the end of the day.

Of course another another sarcastic post, there are plenty of those around.

It has nothing to do with athleticism, it's the hatred that people have of others.

Wait, so you think people are calling Ye into question because Americans hate China and not because a 16-year old girl out-swam a grown man who won the gold medal in the same event and broke a world record? Am I hearing you right?

My country isn't even in the fucking Olympics, well maybe 1 event and that's weightlifting. And we rank 13th in world population.

Since Brit-GAF now has started to get into volleyball, I hope some of you will be watching the handball game against Sweden tomorrow. Hepp Hepp!
