Ye Shiwen seems to always save an explosive burst of energy for the last 50M of her swims.
I think the main problem is that she beat her personal best before these games by 5 seconds which is crazy. Along with the world record by a second. This is without the super suits as well.

Lockte probably didn't save much for his final 50M, while Ye seems to always save a huge burst for the final 50M.

His overall time was way faster than hers so he just spread out his energy over the whole swim.

Head to head he would beat her easily.

She used to be pretty mediocre/average except for the last leg. Notice how she was in fifth place until the last leg in 2011. She improved her other strokes so that she is 1-3 before the last leg, and kept her strength in the last leg (freestyle).

Just learned Missy Franklin is Canadian too. Guess I'll be cheering for her!
Should be competing for us, we are in dire need of gold medals.

When other swimmers like Phelps train for only a couple of months before the Olympics, I think months of work by top Australian coaches can make a big difference.
Phelps has been training for this olympics non-stop for almost 2 years. He took his main events last year at the world championships.

Edit: I'm sorry, it was more than 2 years as he was ready to clean up in the butterfly at Pan Pacific Championships in 2010.

They train from little kids not a few months, and live that way their whole lives up until they may be picked to go overseas. His point was about their treatment while growing up and the soviet like olympian manufactury, which the article even goes into discussing how grueling their lives are in china. I'm not talking about how their training affects their performance but their quality of life.

So I actually hope the US coach's accusation of genetic engineering turns out to be true. It would be the first successful genetic engineering of a human if true and would advance humanity amazingly.'

Ye Shiwen would be a literal superwoman.

Prince Harry and the other guy in the audience

Harry's not the king, right?

edit: I screwed their names up didn't I?

It's still the Soviet system. A few months rotation with Australian coaches does nothing to detract from the overall system. The majority of everything they do takes place in China in the sport boot camps. I stand by my argument.
It's far more centralized than the Soviet system and targets a much narrower range of sports than the Soviets did. The "Soviet system" can be hard to pin down because different regions of the USSR produced different types of athletes using different methods of recruitment and training.

I heard that Chinese officials made Ye Shiwen practice swimming for many days of the week. Often in cold water. And only wearing a 泳装 (a thin suit made for swimming). I don't care if she's doping or not - she probably is - the Chinese system is evil and unfair to these athletes.

But it's not like Lochte was swimming the last 50m of a 1000m swim, it was the last 50m in a 100m swim. He should absolutely have a faster 50m than Ye. More than how impressive Ye was, this speaks volumes to how poorly Lochte did in the last 50m

Tangentially related:

Lu lashes out at China Olympic swim training methods

"They (Australia) have an enthusiasm for swimming which makes me feel different and you ask yourself 'do you train for yourself or someone else?'" Lu, who had a spell training in Australia, praised the social side of her time abroad, being invited to barbecues and meals in people's homes. "Australian friends and families have invited me to barbecues or even for breakfast and in China that never happens," she said. "When I trained in Australia, I had a coach who specialised in short distances and I trained with men, not just women," Lu said, highlighting the differences between the two disparate sporting cultures.

Sounds like they have it rough.

The fact that she was faster than Lochte makes me think she is doping. I just don't see how something like this could be possible.

I take it you got this from US media? I wish people would stop saying she is faster than Lochte when that's not the case. Lochte most likely gassed out.

It was a 400M swim not 100M.

He swam way faster overall, he just didn't save as much for his last 50M. Ye was the opposite, she was lagging behind the leader for most of the swim and saved all her energy for a burst at the end.

Race was 400m individual medley.

Same night she won, another Chinese swimmer took gold in the Men's 400m Freestyle. Won't say they're not doping but it seems they've upped their training and its producing better results.

What are you talking about? Lochte's race was 400M.
