LWT with John Oliver - Tomodachi Life. Featuring Mario & co. reactions to the apology

So you pull off some guys or put the new product on hold and fix the product that's releasing now. Post release support is part of any software companies job. Why should Nintendo be any different?

As for the second excuse, lesbian couples get pregnant all the time. We have family friends who did just that. It's not like they're showing graphic sex in the game directly leading to pregnancy, right?

Any other software company would fix this, not tell its customers to wait for the next game like it's still 1989.

lol, the game is too niche, why would nintendo spend more money on this?, a patch cant be done at this point .

It's too niche, but it still got attention on national TV...

In the end, this whole situation is gonna help the game more than it would hurt it.

Um isn't Yoshi considered to be an animal in the Mario universe? :|

Either way I quite enjoyed that clip and it's nice that Tomodachi Life is getting some good press.

I haven't been following this Tomodachi thing, but what is with Nintendo's bullshit excuse that it's too late to change the game?

Have they still not figured out patching?

It's "too late" for this one. I'm pretty sure this has been their plan all along: announce the game so close to the release that it's "too late" to patch it once people realize they left out a segment of the population.

Something tells me that if Rusty started giving out free games because of a glitch, it wouldn't be "too late" for a patch then.

You mean like how DICE has fixed BF4? Or how Warner decided that they would rather spend money on new DLC than fixing the bugs in Arkham Origins. Patches require manpower, time and money. It's not something you can magically fix in an instant.

This is some deep levels of tin foil hatting.

Yes, Nintendo planned all along to cause controversy and thus planned to release the game in such a way that they couldn't patch it and therefore have to apologise which makes them seem like the bigger company without having to do anything!

Reality is that it's not a matter of flipping a switch, and thus isn't a quick fix patch type of thing... Once a game is "done" the developers go off and work on other projects, thereby throwing off other projects if they go back and work on a massive patch work like this.

Urgh that was awful. I did not want to see that.

Also, the jokes were flat, and toad is not the mushroom that makes you grow, do your research people!

I'm really curious about how Tomodachi Life will go with all this exposure is getting.

What?

There is no patch to take out the gay, it was a save games bug.

And people knew about this game a long time before this.

What in the world are you even talking about.

The truth is out there.

Not this again...

First off, the game's been out in Japan for a year, the dev team has moved on to other things a good while ago.
Second, patching in same-sex relationship would require some changes to some other things in the game. For instance, what do you do about pregnancy?

Patches aren't instant-fixes.

So, how are they inserting the English translation?

Localization hardly needs the intervention of the developer if things were made correctly and the code isn't a mess to begin with.

Given Nintendo's output is pretty safe to say localization can be done easily for this game without needing a developer.

Things were changed for the west release though, like changing a sumo minigame to a soccer one, and adding a rap battle segment iirc.

also this video, that toad and yoshi part.

and this took over a year.

At some point features get locked down and only bugs are fixed. If you "just" change lots of stuff right before release, you risk introducing lots of new bugs and fucking everything up. Nintendo's software quality is one of the best - if not even the best - in the whole industry.

John Oliver is killing it. Loved the Goron City music, haha.

The reason they can't/won't add in gay marriage is because half the skits relating to relationships were created solely with heterosexual relationships in mind - for example, the love square from the Direct, with three dudes confessing their love for a female Mii. If you just made it so that everyone was bisexual you'd have random Miis running around getting it on with the same sex. Obviously that sounds like a hoot to a lot of people (raising my hand here), but no doubt it would lead to SOME complaints, not counting homophobes. (As for an orientation switch: congrats, you're gay! Half the content is locked out for you. Enjoy.)

ANYWAY, it's Nintendo, they'll go all out next time. Specific skits if you're using a gay or bisexual Mii and so on. No doubt someone looked at it, realised the game's relationship mechanics fall apart if you just shoehorn in non-heterosexual relationships, combined that with the cost and the time until release, sales forecasts, etc etc and realised it's a lost cause this time round.

It's not good, but it's not a bullshit excuse. tl;dr you can keep asking for a patch but what is required is a complete overhaul of most of the mechanics and content.

Eh, would have been better to get the message across in the language of the game. You can make heterosexuality clear in a subtle way and I wish they would try it for homosexuality. Mario trying to say his feelings towards Mario with that vocal thingie, something like that. But its a start.

It's funny how in the end nobody know really what this game is about :lol

Sexual intercourse and marriage.

I was watching this with my mom, visiting from out of town who has disparaged video games but is lvl 162 on Candy Crush, only to see her laugh out loud, and us then having a healthy conversation about video games.

Your mother is back in the bad racket.

(Good stuff, though ;))

Will watch this later. Curious about this "Oliver" fellow.

The idea that complaints would deter them is sort of the whole issue. So what if it's just a bunch of dudes running around? I dunno. Seems ok.
