M.2 SSD NOT Recognized on New PS5 PRO

Well this is some B.S that dampens the entire launch of the PS5 PRO for me. All of Sony's documentation says that moving a M.2 SSD from one PS5 to another (including a PS5 PRO) should just work seamlessly right? WRONG!

Upon unboxing my new PS5 PRO (direct and sealed from Sony), I installed a disc drive and inserted my existing 2TB M.2 SSD. The same M.2 SSD that I have been using on my launch PS5 for nearly 4 years now flawlessly BTW. I had just copied over all my game files from the internal 825GB SSD to the M.2 in hopes of making the transition to the PS5 PRO more seamless. Upon first turning on the PS5 PRO with the M.2 drive installed, I got the error below (which I'd never seen before on the base PS5) indicating that the M.2 drive couldn't be used and I had to remove it. So I took it out and tried reinstalling it. From that point on, the PRO refuses to even acknowledge that there is a M.2 drive in the slot. It just proceeded to go through the whole setup process which I completed. I logged in to my PS PLUS account, did a data transfer from my OG PS5 to the PRO and can get to the main dashboard on the PRO fine. However, there is no evidence whatsoever that there is a M.2 installed. The settings don't show it and none of my games are present anywhere.

I tired to connect the M.2 to my PC to check if the physical drive had gotten borked but it recognized it fine. However, I tried reinstalling it back in the old PS5 and that console now refuses to boot with it giving me the same message over and over (despite working for 4 years including right before I took it out to put it in the Pro). So I know it's a PCIE Gen 4 drive clearly for it to work before. If it's a capacity issue, why is that not documented anywhere? All of the games left only about 55GB of space left on the drive. But but but, it's already PS5 formatted with PS5 games on it right? So it should just be recognized by the new system. Again WRONG!

So now, neither PS5 will recognize or boot with the drive. Thus I can't delete any content or even reformat it to just start fresh and redownload everything even if I wanted to. Wondering if it could be something with the physical slot in the brand new PS5 PRO (at least the older system recognizes something is in there).

Reaching out to see if anyone here has had any similar issues or has any suggestions. Since I've seen nothing so far with anyone having such problem, I thought it be good to document the discussion in case others do run into what this is.

There are consequences to offloading all your bs to the customers.

The amount of manual steps I had to go through with my ps5 pro and a fucking screwdriver last night was a complete joke.

I sold my ps5 while it still had a good price (a month ago) and I had to pay 9quid to download my own saves.

User experience my hairy ass.

Dang that really sucks OP. I guess they changed the requirements along the way but didn't force drives that fell under the previous requirements to conform if they were already installed, from the sound of it.

My change worked fine - that was an SN850x WD black I think.

Have you updated the system software of the new pro? Maybe check it is seated correctly in the socket, with the spacer moved up. I suspect the message is just for anything it cannot read - not a criticism of your drive.

Did it have a heatsink? It’s possible you melted it a bit with moving everything.

Yes it has a heatsink. I thought I might have messed it up physically when moving it...but my PC still recognizes it fine. The whole screw and spacer thing was weird. When I first installed this drive, it was without a hitch. But now, the screw and spacer didn't seem to quite fit in the slot properly. I tried multiple times to reinstall it and redo the screw. Could be something with that, but again the old PS5 at least recognizes something. The PRO just can't see anything.

My WB works just fine.

What model/brand are you trying to use.

I believe it was said by others to do the update on the Pro before installing any SSD / Disc drive to it.

I know the whole pulling plates off and putting an Nvme is a bit silly, but everything is working fine as intended.

Rather have this than the only option being some proprietary bullshit.

Have you ever built a pc? Compared to that installing the ssd and the disc drive was like handling a fisher price toy.

All jokes aside I've been spending every weeknight putting together an Ikea bed that slides out to double its size, along with working on my 20X24 deck. I hope I'm ready for that one screw, I'll prepare some ice for my wrist.
Share that deck photo in the off-topic later. I need to do some renovations on my own deck for the end of the year.

Someone needs to make an actual useful PS5 Pro tips and tricks thread. I don't have mine yet but would love to avoid hours of frustration once I get mine this afternoon.

I installed the ssd (and the disc drive) straight after unboxing the pro, everything works fine.

Same here (although no disc drive).

One of the first things I did when I got the Pro was put the SSD I had in my base PS5 into the Pro. I never even turned it on to sign in or anything. Physically the SSD went in without any issues. Upon turning both machines on for the transfer, I was presented with a message stating that there was a duplicate game on the Pro and on the SSD. I didn't understand what it could be until I continued reading through the message on screen, and realised it was Astro's Playroom. It gave me the option to delete it from the SSD, so I did, and then the transfer happened without any issues. I've been playing games from the SSD on my Pro since then, and there's been no issues so far.

Tqaulity - Could you further explain the spacer issue that you mentioned? You said, "When I first installed this drive, it was without a hitch." Did you mean on your base PS5, or your Pro?

If you continue to have problems perhaps exchange it. There most likely are some faulty ones out there.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
I think you're supposed to log into your account first and then install the SSD. That's how I did it and it went without a hitch.
i dont think so.

I installed the disk drive, M2 SSD (Aorus 7000) BEFORE i turn on my ps5 pro the first time.

It installs everything including the firmware, and it works perfectly.

It worked for me. I took mine out from the PS5 and put it into the PS5 Pro. I did this before even booting up the system for the first time. So that is how it works. Something else is going on here with yours. There was an update I was required to install in order to continue, and I did that. That was the only “hurdle," if you can even call it that, that I encountered.

I never got that message about Astro's Playroom. I meant when I first installed the drive on my base PS5 some years ago, it was smooth.

If you continue to have problems perhaps exchange it. There most likely are some faulty ones out there.
That is an option I'm considering for sure. But it's a pain since I got it online at PS Direct and need to go through the RMA process.

UPDATE: After looking up some more examples, I reseated the spacer and tried to reinstalled the M.2 drive on both systems. Now the base PS5 boots but doesn't see the M.2 drive or data at all (same as the PS5 PRO). So now it may be an issue where I damaged the drive in all my install attempts. I'll try to see if I can reformat on PC and then try to buy a new one. I'm fine to redownload the games if I need to, but I just need to know that the M.2 connector on the PS5 PRO is still functional.

This sounds like user error. I installed my nvme drive into the Pro before I even turned it on.

It rebuilt the database, updated the system, and rebuilt it again all on its own. No issues

Had the exact same experience as you.

Definitely seems like the user here installed it incorrectly and maybe damaged the drive in the process. You'll always have one of these.

I purchased several PS5s for people when there were shortages. I probably purchased about 8 or so PS5s in total (and transacted at cost+tax). I had one friend who I purchased for it say that his PS5 kept overheating. I told him we would have to RMA it since it was out of the return period but still within warranty and to get on it quickly. I had to hound the guy because I didn't want to have to deal with him after the warranty period ended and Sony wouldn't cover it anymore. Before sending it to Sony he finally sent me a picture of it and his PS5 was upside down vertically...

You can't save people from themselves.

I transferred all my games to my ps5 2tb ssd, took out, put in ps5 pro and booted it for the 1st time. Everything worked, just gave me a warning about having to delete Astro bot cause it was already on the system.

Worked seamlessly for me. Direct swap from PS5 to PS5 Pro.
