Mac-Age: Apple 30th Anniversary Event?

So, we're suppose to be coming up on the 30th Anniversary Event for Apple, and some people have even said that it would occur this weekend, but we haven't really heard anything about it. Is it still on? It seems odd that Apple would hould an event on a weekend, and we'd hear no buzz about it and no media invites sent out.

Speculation of what's to be announced include:

Video iPod with touchscreen: We've all seen the mock-up pics, patents, etc. And, retail channel has been told that the current iPod w/ video could be end-of-life'd any time this month.

MacBooks and MacBook Pros: A single core version of the Intel chip for an iBook replacement seems likely, and possibly 12" and 17" MacBook Pros as well.

Tablet Mac: I doubt this one. I think it might be coming, but probably not yet.

iPod Phone: Rumored for a long time, but not sure it's where Apple wants to go.

PDA device: Also rumored for a long time. I'd love to see an updated version of the Newton, but again, not sure if Apple want's to go this route.

Their prediction on new laptops seems like it could be accurate, so they'll be available for the back to school sales in August.

iPod predictions seem out of line though. That would mean that the iPod would go nearly a year with out a revision. That doesn't seem likely, and as I said, retail outlets have already been told to expect it to go EOL sometime in April.

I'm in the market to buy a Mac Book Pro. You thik it would be wise to hold off until Monday, or are Mac Book Pros likely not to get any action this weekend?

I'd be very surprised if they touched the MacBook Pros two months after their introduction, save for perhaps introducing a 17" model or something similar. If that's of possible interest to you, you may want to wait; but otherwise, if you're all set to go and don't much care to wait for Monday, I'd go ahead.

Yeah, I agree. If the 15" MacBook Pro is what you are interested in, I don't know if you need to wait. Doubt there will be any significant changes.

As it stands right now, I don't know if we need to expect anything over the weekend. It's odd that Apple hasn't sentany invites out for an event, even though it was expected that they would be doing something for their 30th Anniversary.

Yeah, I'm mainly interested in the 15 incher. If I order tonight, and something is announced on Monday or Tuesday, I'm sure I can alter my order anyway.

Yep, they'd probably ship you the new model anyway. That's generally the way Apple operates.

Isn't their anniversary on April 1, which is Sunday? So if they were to announce anything or do anything - would they do during a weekday for the press coverage?

Yeah, usually they have these events during the week, and invite a bunch of press. So far no invites are known to have gone out, so either the event is still a week or more off, or we won't see one as expected.

Is it a bad time to buy a video ipod because of a chance of a new one?

Yes! As I've said on two other posts in this thread, supposedly retail outlets have been told to expect the iPod w/ Video to go End of Life in April.

Man, the iPod's life cycle is way too short IMO. It seems like apple is always replacing it.

It doesn't really matter to me, I guess. Everything past the iPod photo is just pointless for me but then again I've never cared for multimedia access on the go.

The whole market is changing fast, and Apple has updated the iPod every six months or so since it was released. At first it was mostly higher capcities, but more recently it's been with new features as well such as the iPod Photo and iPod w/ Video.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a "classic" iPod that just does music, and retains the iPod look we've all come to know, and a Video iPod with the touch screen and more multimedia fucntionality.

It may seem short, but it's standard practice for technology. Creative and iRiver do the same thing and Apple only has marketshare to lose by sitting on their hands. As long as they continue to support older models, this really isn't much of an issue. It probably just seems like the cycles are short due to the explosion of digital music/media players the last few years, but the aggressive rollouts have yielded us some very, very promising improvements. Grab an original iPod circa 2001/2002 and compare it to the current batch of iPods (or competitors even).
