Mac crashing repeatedly, is it because of the lack of RAM?

My mom bought herself a Mac Mini and it keeps crashing randomly, is it because it only has 256MB RAM or could there be other problems? It's a pain in my ass too because she keeps calling me to fix it :|

I hope this doesn't turn into what I think it will become, because I really want some help! After someone helps me, THEN you can turn this thread into WWIII.

If you can provide some sort of description of exactly what you're running or what's going on when the machine crashes, that'd help immensely in trying to troubleshoot what's going on. It shouldn't be anything with the RAM since 256MB is sufficient for basic computer usage, if far from ideal. I've heard plenty of people having a perfectly stable experience with their Minis with just 256MB of RAM.

Could just be a defective unit. I have Macs with 256 and 384 megs acting as web/mail servers respectively. The mini I have has 512MB of RAM in it and works fine.

All of the programs she's using are out of the box. Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, etc. One thing that bothers me is that she's using an old D-Link USB Wireless adapter. Other then that, it just crashes randomly while using Mail or Safari mostly.

Oh, when it crashes it just sits there and you cant move the mouse or perform any actions. Then after a few mins it says to reset the computer or turn it off.

She might not be closing the programs correctly (clicking the window closed in IE for example closes it on Windows but not on Mac, thus wasting precious megs of ram). Way back in 2000 I bought my first Mac a Lime iMac and it crashed all the time (it came stock with 32mb) I upgraded to 96mb and the bastard still works perfectly.

I found out the problem, her USB wireless adapter was crashing the computer. Others with the D-Link DWL-122 have also had this problem with Macs. I found the updated drivers and they say it should correct the problem.

Thanks for trying to help, guys.

It could be that aliens have tampered with your computer.

Oh what, you say if I read the thread I'll discover you've pinpointed the problem? Fantastic!

sounds like you might be having a problem with the power supply

it is probably due to bad ram. i had a similar problem with my Power Mac G4.

Sounds to me like the problem is people not reading the thread.

Glad to hear you solved your problem. Damn those third parties and their shitty accessories.

Yeah, I was reading around and pretty much everyone had problems with the drivers that come with the adapter. So far it seems like these new drivers fixed everything, no crashes...yet...
