Mac Hardware and Software |OT| - All things Macintosh

I was hoping replacing my HD would have fixed my intermittent mac restarting itself randomly issues. But, it just crashed again.

So here is a very short history. 2010 15" Macbook Pro started to just reboot itself sometimes. It seemed to happen when I'd first use it in the day or wake it from sleep. Id use it for 3-5 minutes then - black screen - "your mac restarted because of a problem..." and then reboots.

I've taken it to the Apple store 3 times.

First time: Showed them the log files which they say dont help much in this case (?) and they do a full system check. Everything checks out green. Cant figure out the problem so I leave.

Several weeks later I go again: Same thing with system logs. They dont seem to care much and again they run a full system check. This time and issue popps up. Something with the processor I think. He said it was potentially overheating which is why it keeps rebooting. So he says I can leave it with them and spend the $350 to send it off and get the processor replaced. I wasn't in the best position to spend that kind of cash so I say I'll come back in a few weeks.

Last time (Few days ago at a different location) I take it in. I decide that instead of dropping it off for repairs I'd schedule a genius appointment and just get a second opinion. They do a full system check again and everything turns up GREEN. No issues at all. So he tells me that perhaps its a software issue and a reformat could fix it...or its bad ram.

So here I am. New SSD didn't fix the problem so now I'll move onto the Ram. I tested it quickly with this Memtest program and everything checked out fine. However, that program was much much too fast for me. I want my old PC Memtest86 test to just rock this bitch for hours.

My question though: Is memtest86 actually compatible with Mac? I've read that it is but on the download page I get only windows and linux options. Memtest86

Yes, I've run a 15" MBP with it booted from a USB stick. Bad RAM can crash it.

Download the Windows or Linux version (only difference is how the .iso is compressed, the Mac can open both (as can Linux)).

IIRC, I just followed the instructions for making an Ubuntu installer on the Mac, with the memtest ISO instead of Ubuntu.

Yeah. I forgot about the 13"'s other drawback. I really want a Quad and Discrete graphics but I can't get past the size. I'd have to go and play around with one long enough to get used to it but it's just too big. I actually think 13 is too big sometimes. Also the price. 13" is expensive enough for Retina right now.

I'm the opposite. For me a 13'' is really the lowest size I can bear. I'd prefer a 15'' myself, but the price is just offensive.

Abed you'd have to enter the dreamatorium to get discrete graphics in a 13" Retina with the improvements that Intel is making in there integrated graphics.

Yeah, the 13'' will never have a discrete GPU. But it MUST have a quad-core, otherwise it's a joke to call that a Pro when it's just an Air repackaged.

I really think that, rationally, the Air 13'' is the best option right now. Unfortunately, I hate the look of the Air. I know I'm in the minority here, but I just don't like the aesthetics of the Air, otherwise I'd go for it. I want to buy a notebook to last me around 5 years and getting something I don't feel pleased with is a no go.

I also have some questions for you guys/gals, since this will be my first Mac:

1) a friend of mine is going to Los Angeles by middle of August for a conference. I'm planing on asking her to bring me a 13'' Macbook Pro Haswell, since Macs are much cheaper in the US than here in Europe (except for the UK). If there is any problem with it I can just take it to an official Apple store anywhere in the world, right? The warranty will work anywhere for one year, right?

2) he power supply unit/charger is universal, right?

I think that's it. Thanks.

The huge silver bezels, they ruin the design :( Otherwise, the Air is a gorgeous notebook.

Hopefully the next Air has the same unified screen method that allows them to go closer to the edge with a black border. Though the reason it's silver right now is because they use plastic instead of glass to keep the weight down.

probably not even worth fixing, since i am still here posting and it all seems to work still.

Embedded GPU in the Intel chip, and a separate discrete GPU. At least in the 15" models. The 13" are stuck with the shitty embedded Intel GPU

do games on the 15 use both? I mean is it worth it to have both?
just wondering if I should save more for a top end 15 rMBP or get an iMac with a better GPU

I really want to have a retina display though. I wonder if that little GPU in the 15 could run at the res of 4K Seiki TV

just thinking about having a retina and having that TV as an external monitor is my eyecandy wet dream

maybe GPU updates next month would work

I've heard TVs make shitty monitors and monitors make shitty TVs...forgot what the technical argument was, but it wasn't only based on resolution.

That's accidental damage, On a LCD display. That's not covered under warranty and the cost would set you back just about a new machine. Don't bother fixing it.

Memtest will work on a mac. You can also try rember which is OSX software.

Can I ask what the kernal panic logs within console are saying? Everything turning up green is probably just AST running and seeing everything is there, it's not a good diagnostic tool at all, it's pretty shit to be honest. It's something you're required to run for the customer on apples end but it doesn't really push anything.

Ram could be your issue as mentioned. Memtest, Rember are your first options. There's a good chance memtest will fail instantly for whatever reason, Then try Rember. There is the apple memory diagnostics but I wouldn't bother with that either.

Although I might add that I've had problems with RAM that went undetected by any memory tests I could throw at it. Sometimes they are simply unreliable, even in their failings. The best test is to get some other RAM and run that for a while.

1) I've bought AppleCare from international resellers (cheaper) and it's been fine. The warranty should work anywhere.

2) It's likely new models will be introduced in June at WWDC.

3) Yes. 100-240V~ 50-60Hz (assuming it fits the actual outlet)

Thanks a lot for the info. I know they will probably be introduced in June, I just hope that they will be stocked in Apple stores around middle of August without shortages or something.

Thanks!

Here is my last crash report. Unfortunately, since I dont know what is the important information I will just post the whole thing. Sorry!

If it goes down in the middle of the night, it's usually maintenance. It's back up now with no new changes at all. If anything the tiles are different products in different places like usual.

Even TUAW had an article about this. Why do people get so excited when there's no rumors of a product? It's not nearly close enough to WWDC and an arbitrary update on a Tuesday night is pretty unlikely.

anyone in here ever have to do "Apple Sales Training Online"? I work at a college bookstore and we will be selling Apple products soon, so I'm going through all these modules and getting points.

Yeah, the 13'' will never have a discrete GPU. But it MUST have a quad-core, otherwise it's a joke to call that a Pro when it's just an Air repackaged.

Not to cut out your other stuff though they started this in 2009.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vOvdI8HJ1o <--- 11 minute mark

They introduced a 15" MBP with just integrated graphics for $1,699 of course it lasted I think one generation and hopefully will not be brought back. The 15" should contain both integrated and discrete no matter how good Haswell claims to be.

The guide is to keep getting new ones put in until it works sadly. Even the service techs don't even know which display is getting put in until its in and you run the terminal command. Apparently the new LG ones are 'fixed' because my service tech does 1 replacement a week on them.

I would like to see the speed bumps on the 15" Retina next month
I wont buy until October anyway just to wait and see if any new issues arise and some fixes but still want to see a step up with GPUs maybe something closer to a GTX 680MX to hold me for the next 3-4 years?

just noticed ram is built in - seriously Apple :(

I'll just stop worrying about it I guess but dropping $3,000 makes having any issue hard to live with.

Don't expect any significant GPU bump until next year.

Speed bumps are going to be marginal ~10% is the jump between Intel chips lately.

Haven't heard a single rumor on discrete graphics card yet, but hopefully they make the move to 2GB of VRAM.

Just buy 16GB of ram from them, student discount is like $180 more.

My bill was $2886 without putting in the 512 SSD upgrade (which I regret not doing)

I don't understand why the Mac store has to go down for hours at a time for them to perform updates to begin with. We purposely pick software at my work so we can do hot deploys and updates with no downtime.

Apple Care do you guys always get this?

What does it cover and what voids the coverage?

On macbooks, yes. I went through 3 mainboards, a screen, SMC, ram and drive on my 2011 MBP, all covered by Applecare thankfully.

Modifying anything that's not listed as "user serviceable" voids the warranty (though if you can make it look like stock before you take it in, they might not notice ;)

The 15" MPB will ditch the discrete graphics at some point, just not this year or next.

I can see this happening once they kind of meet in terms of performance. From what I heard Apple had a lot of say or helped with the development of Haswell to increase graphics performance.

But in MacBook news people are saying that Apple is increasing orders so the WWDC release is likely. I'm probably going to be at the Apple Store the day they get them. Pretty excited. It's going to feel like a whole new world coming from my old 09 13" MBP.

Whoa, what's the incentive for Apple to ditch discrete graphics? It's a Pro device, a developer machine. If anything, shouldn't we be expecting hoping for Apple to eventually add discrete graphics to the 13"?

Battery life, cost, no more trouble with switching between 2 GPUs...it's fairly obvious that Intel's graphics will catch up to the entry level GeForces in a few years. The most anyone has ever developed on a 13" MPB was an indie iOS app...it's always been a laptop for photographers and college freshmen regardless of the Pro name.

What I don't get is why Apple gimps the iMacs since battery life doesn't matter. A 512mb 650m is the high-end option on the 21"? Anything but the top of the line 27" is an expensive joke imo.

Always, have on my last two MBPs and have used it for both.

They typically don't cover idiot damage such as physical and liquid. In one of my cases though, my friend split Pepsi on my MBP and got it on the left exhaust fan, the bearing wore out over time and they replaced it.

Realistically all Apple discrete GPUs need to be 2GB minimum. Especially when driving large/dense displays.

The Samsung display's colours look different and the image actually looks better too.

I agree with this 100%. Hopefully this year and the years to follow bring an improvement.
