I personally hope the OLED display is basically a miniature iPod touch in how it works. With a screen as good as my iPhone and the ability to display dynamic content. If iStats put out an option to, I'd move all my Stats stuff down there and remove it from the menubar completely if touching them on the display were to display some sort of HUD on the screen. (I still kind of wish they'd put out an option for sidebar iStats widgets.)

I want to be able to customize what I see at most times, with the ability to manually/automatically switch to a standard F-key setup for when I'm in games or certain apps. As long as I can change what is displayed. Damn I hope Apple's smart with this. If they're gonna do it, they might as well go all out.

They could make it so it uses a swipe gesture to switch between the F keys and other "screens" of display groups.

I like how you think. Can either be gimmick city or a great addition.

As long as it's not locked down. I mean let's face it, what other reason would there be to implement it if you're not going to let app devs make their own stuff for it. Imagine apps gaining special buttons of their own on a per app basis. And when you hold down Fn it could temporarily display the default keys. The possibilities are endless. I can't wait to see what it can do when it comes. Imagine if they somehow built it into the wireless keyboards too. What's next, putting a screen on the mouse or making the trackpad one big screen?

They did have that patent that allows someone to use the Apple Pencil with the MacBook trackpads...

Could you imagine if they turned the Magic Trackpad into a makeshift optional Wacom style tablet? Of course it's all fantasy. The price would be outrageous. It'd make more sense to allow the Pencil to work with all sizes of the iPad and the Plus models of iPhone and release an App for the iPad and Plus iPhone that turns it into a tablet that can be synced to the computer. (I wouldn't be surprised if an app like that already exists. At least a third party pencil stylus and app combo.)

It does exist, it's called AstroPad

Hm for those using the beta can you see if Atom pays nice with tabs? Normally you can only have I've instance of atom open (or is it brackets?) Was wondering what happens when you open a second program tab

How would the Polaris version compete with other PC laptops today?

I don't know the first thing about PC gaming, and obviously I know it's not fair to compare it to a gaming desktop setup, but what about a PC laptop?

Polaris is basically all about very high quality midrange hardware (good power consumption, good bang for your buck) rather than about being truly high-end. It's very well-suited to what Apple wants from a GPU.

Thanks! Isn't this also what is rumored to be in the PS4 Neo?

What are the chances that the new MacBook Pro will use Kaby Lake cpu?

I'm insufficiently familiar with the Kaby Lake rollout timeline and especially which chips are suitable for which Macs, but IIRC the Kaby Lake CPUs suitable for the MBP roll out late this fall (like November I think?) and the Kaby Lake CPUs suitable for the iMac are coming in winter or spring 2017, something like that.

New info dump.

https://9to5mac.com/2016/08/10/2016-macbook-pro-details/

Highlights:

Won't be at September 7th event iPhone event

Still no definite on multiple colors

AMD Polaris might be an option for at least one of the RMBPs

Smaller footprint (sorry 14" and 16" believers)

g*ddammit Apple how long are you going too wait with the new Macook...
Uh, there was literally no chance of it even being at the iPhone event anyway. It has always been in October and will probably once again be October. If not a couple weeks AFTER the iPhone event.

...hate me...
So I finally tried to turn my MBPr... nothing.

Keep trying and still nothing.

Tried to reset the SMC, nothing apparently but a few seconds later it did turn on!

But didn't boot completely, loading bar gets stuck.

Turned off and tried safe mode etc but nothing :(

Now it doesn't turn on again.

What a luck.

Gonna call Apple in the morning.

It was hinted on some sites. And since a update is long overdue the sooner it is out there the better. Not that of a long shot when the new iphone rumors say not much changes

Turns out it my Macbook is still "on", it feels warm. The caps lock LED turns on and off.

Basically, it's shorting, if I understand correctly.

gg

I feel utterly crushed.

What are the chances that the new MacBook Pro will use Kaby Lake cpu?

They would need to have a significantly more aggressive rollout plan for Kaby Lake for the appropriate Quad-Core + Top-end Iris Pro GPU to be ready in time for the Q4 MacBook Pros.

Given that Kaby Lake is the "third generation" of processors at 14nm, however, maybe it's possible.

We should know more next week at IDF.

Apple used to get special deals from Intel. Could happen again

That's what I'm really hoping for. Iris Pro GPUs still are a leap, however.

It would be weird for Apple to have these awesome OLED D3-color space displays and to put all this work into improving color space and color depth support in Sierra, but not give users the hardware they need to watch that content.

Hmmm, logged into my mac today and was greeted by notification requesting my password for messages, iCloud, and FaceTime. I entered it and now my message app is not working.

Is it just down or what?

Edit:
Nvm sorted it out. ^_^

The Skylake Iris Pro chips came out somewhat recently...and there was some recent roadmap that didn't have GT4e graphics on it at all, so who knows what the future is there. GT3e was on there though iirc, less EDRAM (64 vs 128MB I think) but it's something at least.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I've been watching Apple's laptop GPUs since they went Intel with the first MacBook. Trust me, guys... TRUST ME:

Don't even bother hoping for "great"
Anticipate "mediocre" at best
Prepare to still be disappointed

You're going to get a good balanced GPU, not a top-of-the-line one optimized for heavy gaming or GPU-melting performance, and you're going to be disappointed that you have to spring for the upper SKUs to get it.

Spoilers.

Well it'd certainly be a break with previous tradition.

It may have more to do with AMD's Polaris chips than with Apple:

the switch to the new Polaris 11 architecture is expected to be a significant performance upgrade over the previous 28nm chips, with AMD promising "console-class GPU performance for thin and light notebooks" and "extraordinary VR experiences" from the new low-power mobile architecture.

Maybe Apple is just using it for the power efficiency

Apple is using one of AMD's "Polaris" graphics chips because the design offers the power efficiency and thinness necessary to fit inside the slimmer Apple notebook, the person said.

Yeah that's about Polaris. AMD made big efficiency and size gains with it.

They've put top of the line Iris Pro GPUs into the 15" MacBook Pros since Intel announced them. With Kaby Lake's supposed new GPU architecture, they could maybe go a step down and still be a major improvement, but I'd still personally like the 128MB of L4 cache.

I sacrifice an iPod Touch every night hoping they land some early Kaby Lake availability, even though I know in my heart of hearts we're getting Skylake

I bought the ~$2500 2013 model for the 2GB 750M. It was a "low-tier" GPU even then. Three years later, and it's pretty much garbage.

I don't consider Iris Pro to be even close to "mid-tier," though the next-gen in a 13" would be pretty nice. But on the 15", I want dedicated, and at this point at least 4gb VRAM. Macs aren't for gaming, no. But if I'm going to spend $2,500 on a work laptop, I'd like to play Overwatch at 1080p/60fps at medium settings. That's not asking for a whooooole lot.

I think we're getting Skylake, too. But no doubt the whole release sucks. Every competitor from Dell to HP to Alienware to Razer had Skylake out 6+ months ago.

If they've waited this long and they announce the new MBPs a month or two before they go onto sale, it seems likely it's gonna be Kaby Lake. Assuming Intel doesn't delay yet again, they'd be coming out right when they're available.

There honestly is a chance it's Kaby Lake. Intel said they started shipping the laptop chips at the end of July. I'm just keeping my expectations in check

There better be up to date technology for the Macbook Pro 15 2016.

The latest Macbook Pro 15s are outdated. The latest ones are only updated with Force Touchpad and 16GB RAM default. It still has the same Haswell processor model and same iGPU, Intel 5200 from 2014 model.

So spec wise the latest update was the year 2014. I can't wait to see what 2016 brings.

I got a prompt (well popup) from Adobe, saying I needed to update Flash. I clicked it and it redirected me to get3.adobe.com.

I downloaded it and updated, then scanned all Flash files just in case.

It's legit, right?

I get those popups too. It's legit. But yeah, as mentioned, if you're ever paranoid, just go to Adobe directly and download it yourself to be safe.

At least Chrome and Firefox are working to destroy Flash by next year. Safari already disables it by default. So if we're lucky, within a year or two we might actually have finally killed Flash. Only 10 years after Steve Jobs stood on the battlefield and declared war.

All we need is the straggling websites that still use Flash to get off their "lazy" asses and code some HTML5 already. Somehow I think porn sites will be the first to finish the job. (Many are HTML5 already. But some still use Flash. It's only a matter of time.)
