Command + ~ for window switching within a single application.

It's better than just Command + Tab going through every single window you have. I feel like Windows shortcuts like Alt + Tab don't consider scale like OSX's shortcuts.

FUUUU, why am I just figuring this out now

I'm getting some issues with my external NEC monitor during startup, plus Safari hangs quite a bit. Once some patches have been released I'll opt for a clean install. (Retina MBPro here)

Thanks a ton, guys.

[edit] Oooh top of the page, might as well post this now (been meaning to since Greyface did). I've been using these gestures for a while now and i'm really comfortable with it all. I haven't even opened BTT to mess with things in quite a while, so i'm basically settled on this list. I just went the route of extending on the philosophy of the default gestures, so (to me anyway) it all feels natural/no-brainer.

System Preference Trackpad Gestures

How reliable are the tiptap and clickswipe gestures? The conflict between certain gestures can be annonying; I'm getting mixups between single finger tap and three finger tap :/

Just made this my MC background since I was getting tired of the light plain grey linen;

Also just noticed the new stock screen savers, which are awesome.

Between Transmission and µTorrent, which is the preferred torrent program?
There is also xtorrent which you just reminded me to ask Sentry (I use transmission)

I honestly don't remember whether or not i've messed with the sensitivity options or not, but I have no issues personally. Tbh though I only really assigned tip taps to functions I use more rarely. I was going to steal your five finger tap for app switcher, but I liked the tip tap because you can immediately use two fingers after lifting the left finger to scroll through the open apps, which is quick.

But if you're having sensitivity issues just go into the advanced options and mess around until you find a comfort zone. Don't forget the register-on-lift tap options too.

Actually, I use BitTorrent (same as µTorrent more or less?).

It gives you the most options and detailed info imo. The BitTorrent app icon was so bad back in the day that after giving Xtorrent a try (and ultimately giving up on it), I liked that app icon so much that I stole it (turned it greed) and made it the default BitTorrent icon (as well as renaming the app to Xtorrent :p). The new purple icon is a bit better iirc, but i'm too used to the one I modded to use anything else.

Chaps,

whats the best free VNC type server for me to setup on my Mac and work from my PC. I preferably need it like a usual RDP session- but I won't be on a connected network

Any help?

It does have facebook chat, but it isn't built in per-say.

And obviously he needs to have set up iMessages as well, or you need to have his @me/cloud in his contact info.

Just for anyone wondering, here is a link to adding Facebook chat to Messages. It's a walk through on how to do it in the beta from February, but the process is the same in the final version from what I can tell.

I just got an Air, and took the free ML upgrade, but my dock is still the old one. How do I get it to look like the ML screenshots, with the pale grey dock and rectangular active app lights?

If you still have the old Dock, you don't have ML. Did you install ML or just download the installer?

Nice, it works. Is officially supported Facebook chat coming this fall as well as part of their roll out of Facebook features baked into the OS?

Also; Is something wrong with my setup or do messages not sync across devices?

Screens is the best there is imo. Or iTeleport. But be careful with some of that shit. Anything that makes you download software on your Mac (like iDisplay) I advise to stay away from. It can ruin your system in my experience, specifically the default screen resolution when you log in, for example. Anything that relies on the built in system VNC settings is perfectly safe, though.

I doubt it, but I hope so. I've been using the jabber method since iMessages beta and while it works most of the time, it isn't too reliable i've found. Sometimes it'll have missed entire replies.

And make sure your devices are using the same ID and linked properly with the 'you can be reached at' option on your iDevice.

For some reason, Safari isn't saving my GAF log-in info, and I have to enter it every time I hit the bookmark. Little help?

edit: Deleted some cookies, and I'm good to go. Nevermind!

Awesome, found the option on the phone and got it to work, thanks.

So when I copy certain hyperlinks to paste them elsewhere, instead of copying the actual link, it'll copy the hyperlink shortcut. Like, if I'm on a forum and I want the link to post #15, instead of giving me the URL, when I paste it'll say "#15" and be hyperlinked. How do I stop that? Or is it a Safari thing?

Two days ago, I changed all my passwords to long 1Password-generated ones. After finally having done a clean ML installation yesterday, I began to reinstall all applications and log in with the new passwords.
At some point the keyboard focus switched to Chrome's address bar and I didn't notice, so I accidentally entered my master password at Google. Being kinda paranoid about stuff like this, I immediately changed it. The old one's easy to remember, and I changed it just slightly.. but when I continued reinstalling apps after a long, stressful day, I realized I had forgotten the new master password. I tried dozens of possible ones and a lot of combinations, to no avail.

Password cracker is running since 20 hours, will continue doing so for three days. Laugh at me, I deserve it.

Do you have everything registered to the same email address (or a couple?)? Can't you do the "Forgot password" thing on your email, and then go through all your sites and reset the passwords?

I'm stupid. I realized just now that I could just get the 1P database from my Time Machine backup, as I've changed the password after reinstalling and I didn't add or edit anything. I won't be at home until Thursday, and no one in my family has a Mac to be able to access the HD to send me the file, but I'm pretty relieved right now.

Still gonna crack it, I want to know what the heck I changed it to.

Yeah this would have been my last resort, but I've also stored some non-login-related secure notes within 1Password.

The Terminal command for adding iTunes "now playing" notifications to the dock (defaults write com.apple.dock itunes-notifications -bool TRUE) doesn't work in Mountain Lion anymore. User Ben Hegarty from MacWorld came up with a solution and it works great, I'm posting it here for anyone interested in getting iTunes in the Notification Center:

I've come up with a solution for Mountain Lion which works pretty well for me. It uses AppleScripts and Terminal-Notifier (https://github.com/alloy/terminal-notifier) to display the track names as notification centre notifications.

Here's a screenshot...

I've put it all into a neat little application package for people to easily install and use themselves (see the instructions file inside the ZIP archive).

Here's the link to the ZIP file containing everything you need.

Give it a go and let me know how it goes!

Does anyone that has flux notice it not working properly on ML? For some reason in the morning and all day it's got the orange tint, when it shouldn't. Settings doesn't change anything.

flux is working OK for me BUT there was a one time issue where the preference window would not show up unless I quite and restarted the app. now the pref window shows up OK.

maybe try deleting the preference file, uninstalling and reinstalling it?

Sometimes it does that for me also, so I have to quit and then restart the program.

My internet has been running really slowly on my Mac for the past week. It's been running fine on other PCs and devices in my house, so I think the problem must be with my Mac itself.

After contacting Comcast customer support, they had told me that I needed to defragment my hard drive. What free software would you recommend and would this even help? IIRC, Macs don't need to defragment because the OS takes care of that on it's own.

EDIT: My download speed seems to be the only one that is affected. It's 25.95 Mbps on other laptops but .24 on mine... Upload rate is about the same.

Comcast lied to you. Call them back.

I used to have my dock on the left side of the screen when I had a powerbook G4. Now whenever I try it I can't stand it. Everything seems so tiny. (I'm one of those horrible people who has the dock taking up 50% of the screen.)

Quite cool thanks. Works great. Not sure if it will replace you control:tunes but neat none the less. I wish I could use a gesture for notification centre with my magic mouse...

Anyone else having issues with Preview no longer being able to save/detect signatures from the iSight camera? Wanted to input my sigs anew and found out it isn't working. :s

Also, every Twitter app out there is so cookie cutter. Even Tweetbot. It's better than the others but still not smart in it's UI whatsoever. Also, all the icons suck to the point where they ruin my dock look. :lol

Haven't found a better custom Twitter icon but this VLC one is awesome (since the cone is horrendous);

Ditto. Comcast lied to put the blame elsewhere instead of actually working to help you out. It might be something on the computer, but it's not fragmentation. I'd call them back and yell at them for even thinking of telling you that.

Not sure what could cause it though. Especially since all your other devices work fine.

But if you have the means, and I don't guarantee it will help, but you could backup your files to another HDD (Complete backup) then reformat and reinstall the OS by using the Recovery partition, then use Migration Assistant to pull everything back. This will "defragment" any files since it'd be copying everything back over one file at a time. It's the only thing I could think of, and could help get rid of any unneeded stuff, but really, I can't see why this would happen.

Besides trying that, what apps do you have installed that you use yourself? Especially ones that are most likely running things in the background.

As for background programs, I use Dropbox, Cloud, Google Music Manager, Growl, Evernote, Mint, Better Touch Tool, and Xtra Finder. Last.fm, Keka, Adium, and Clean My Mac are some others I use quite often.

I use a few of those and never had problems. Some I've never used like Google Music, Evernote, Mint, Xtra, Keka and Clean My Mac (I have Hazel which has uninstall functionality built in and I prefer to spelunk into Library myself for the rest). I used to use Last.fm as well as Scrobbler whatever it was called until I got Bowtie. I recall one of those two was really terrible on the CPU back in the day. But I don't know what could actually cause a problem like that.

The only reason I have VLC installed on my system is because my hardware ATSC decoder utilizes VLC to preview channels, and I refuse to pay for EyeTV yet again. Great software, penny-pinching developers.

It looks like a lot of us use the same apps, illustrating the awesome Mac-GAF Hive mind in action.

Here's my set of smallish utilities I use often - I've beaten my love of Xtrafinder to death, BBT, Dropbox, Growl, Keka and Unarchiver, AppCleaner, Adium, CCleaner, Onyx, Colloquy (IRC client), Alfred w/power pack, Caffeine, iStat Menus, Cyberduck, Radium and XGestures.

Also - Junecloud's Automators. If you regularly trade files with Windows users or need a quick way to create symbolic links, these tools will save a lot of time.
