Awesome thanks. I was mostly worried about the iTunes and iPhoto library stuff. I hope I still get the SSD speed out of it that I want if the libraries are still being read off the mechanical drive. I wasn't quite sure how that would work. I guess I'll see soon. I hear iTunes is much better off an SSD.

I'm too burnt out at the moment to set up the software now. Opening up my iMac and replacing the optical drive was tense to say the least. I need a drink. :/

iTunes should be fine. Your library file and caches and stuff will be on your SSD, just the music files themselves will be on the HDD. It should launch instantly and populate your library, but doesn't need to seek the HDD until you play a track.

I don't think iPhoto structures it's library the same way so you probably won't get the speed benefits as much. Havent played with iPhoto much since I did the mod.

Anyone use two hard drives in lion (or osx in general?) Just installed an SSD in place of my optical drive and wondering how I'm going to do this now.

I am half-asleep so I am not going to try and figure out a solution to your mix and match question, but you can have your home folder on a different volume. I have my Mac Pro set up this way.

To set this up, create a new admin user (e.g. 'elcapitan'). Log out of your account and log in to this one. Use ditto or rsync or something to duplicate your account to its new location. In system prefs, bring up the advanced options for your user (right click, IIRC) and set the home folder to the new location. Log in with our user again and that's it.

I guess I don't generally get why you would want your home folder on the HDD and not the SSD. Everytime you open a program your are seeking the HDD for pref files caches, other support files.

Most programs with large libraries let you directly point the library to a separate location (iTunes, iPhoto etc.)

You can setup your own documents location on the HDD manually. IMO the HDD should only be for mass storage. Why go to the trouble of putting in a super fast ssd if you are going to look for work arounds to make it slower again?

I guess there are some things that suck by keeping the home folder on the ssd. iOS device back up files come to mind :/

Thanks for the replies about the SSD guys.

I should clarify that I'm only putting my movies, music, docs, and photos on the mechanical drive. EVERYTHING else is going on the SSD. I don't want to move anything else in the home folder over. Especially that library folder. (that's pretty much all that's left in there after the media folders)

It's all staying on my SSD. I can't buy an SSD big enough to fit my media or I would put all that over there too.

Hello guys. I moved into a dorm that doesn't have Wifi, and I have a MBA 2012. So I just bought an adapter and it works perfectly. Good speed too (I'm in Japan).

Thing is, no Wifi makes my foreign iPhone near useless. I intented to use it like an iPod Touch, but it needs Wifi. So I read a little about the native Airport thing you can use for creating a wifi signal from a Mac, and it was pretty straightforward... Except that my iPhone has troubles catching the signal, and that even when it does internet doesn't work properly, if at all.

Any idea of what could be the problem? Should there not be any solution, is there any third-party soft that would allow me to create a Wifi signal from my Mac?

Thanks for the help.

If it were my only computer, I'd partition the SSD in my Air and follow the above instructions. Having OS/applications on one volume and data on another makes it very easy to do seperate backup/restore operations (not that it's all that arduous the other way).

What you said makes sense too.

For iOS backups, soft link a folder on your HDD to where they normally go to get them off your SSD. I did the same thing for my Steam library on my Mac Pro (yeah, I have a seperate games volume from /Applications).

One thought: what subnet does the Ethernet use? I believe the internet sharing uses 192.168.2.0/24, so if the Ethernet is also on that, it will be confused. You can change this by editing a plist.

I'm sorry, I'm a total newbie when it comes to Mac and I'm not that big on network things either.

Could you explain me how to do that please?

edit > I just checked in Settings>Network and Subnet appears to be 255.255.255.0

(I have a late-2011 MBA)

Has anyone noticed that when returning from sleep Mail will make the "checking for mail" sound a few times in rapid succession? I've also noticed that my MBAs wake-up time is very inconsistent. Prior to the update it was always slow, but now it alternates between being fast and slow for no apparent reason.

They say fall, so probably after it hits in iOS 6, which should be in a week or two.
They seem to want to prepare this for a simultaneous launch with iOS6 since the new features will also be in iOS6, hence the rather quick release of the developer betas.

I'd say its looking like:

Sept 12: iOS6 GM

Sept 21:
iPhone 5
iOS6 public release
10.8.2 public release
iPhoto & Aperture updates

That's your subnet mask. You need to take a look at your IP address, which will likely be 192.168.xxx.xxx. The first xxx is the part that's important. If it's not 2 you should be fine.

It's not 2.

When I activate Internet Sharing, Wifi icon in Network stay yellow and there's some a warning under "Status : In Use" : "Wi-Fi has an automatically allowed IP address which is xxx.xxx.xxx.xx and won't be able to connect to internet".

Now, I don't have an internet Wi-Fi network at disposition and can't say if the warning is telling me there's a problem with internet sharing or that I simply can't access internet on the MBA with that Wi-Fi connection.

Huh. On my Mac running 10.7, when I turn on Ethernet -> WiFi sharing, Wi-Fi under Network has a green 'light' and reads: "Wi-Fi is connected to _compy_ and has the IP address 192.168.100.x", which is the same address as the ethernet port on my LAN.

You may wish to have Console running and look in 'All messages' as you turn on Internet Sharing. You can find this in /Applications/Utilities/Console

It is mostly safe, I think. It contains your Mac's name and LAN IP address, as well as your network hardwares' MAC addresses, which iTunes uses for DRM licensing for movies/video. Not sure if that matters.

I am half asleep, so don't feel like comparing that to mine, but there are failure messages. Will take another look tomorrow.

Are you using 10.8 and did you apply the firmware update for your Mac? If both yes, at a guess it is getting the mail during a powernap. No audio stuff is running during a power nap, so it might be queueing the sounds until audio exists again.

I'm having the opposite problem, where new mail notification sounds almost never play for me (using headphones).

Hopefully it gets fixed in 10.8.2 cause it's really bugging me.

Are you not allowed to just buy a wifi router, clone the MAC address from your MBA, and then use the wifi router with both the MBA and the iPhone? iPhones don't necessarily like connecting to ad-hoc wifi networks.

I can, but I don't really have the money to. I just moved in and have a lot of stuff to buy, so a router isn't really high on my priorities... Especially if my MBA is supposed to be able to do exactly what I need.

There's a Safari extension called YouTube5 that replaces the Flash video with a QuickTime container. Works much, much better than YouTube's native HTML5 player.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it. I'll also take the question to the Mac hardware thread, you never know.

It's mostly the same group of us :p

I just did a test and can confirm the same problem on my MacBook Air running 10.8.1 (I have a GigE adaptor), so it's not just you.

Sigh. I figured it might happen, since I read a few articles today highlighting the problem and how no one seems to have found a solution...

I might just end buying a router...
I heard the worst about Japanese routers' interfaces, I'm scared.

So, I have a problem with a MBPr.

Periodically the wireless connection will drop. It will still say it's connected, but it's out both for Skype and webpages and downloads.

The only solution is to turn the WLAN of, and re-enable it. Then everything will work normally for a while - sometimes hours, sometimes only minutes, until it inevitably drops again.

I seem to have a lot less issues while running win7, but I believe it occasionally happens there as well.

Under OSX, most problems seems to occur while Skype is running, but I haven't been able to verify if the program alone is to blame.

The router I'm using at home is a piece of shit, but I have experienced problems at a friends apartment, and possibly at university as well.

My old acer laptop does not exhibit any of these problem when connected to the same network, at least not at the same time.

So, does anybody have a solution to my issues?

That's why I stopped using that screensaver and just use one of the nice looking photo ones with my folder of desktop pictures. I hate and always hated that stupid ability to play music from it. It's not needed. I don't want it. I want it off! So now it's off.

Lol, I like having my artwork sadly I just hammer on esc before pressing or moving anything else just incase. It is annoying though to have random artwork from podcasts thrown in, I wish there were more options for it so I could disable half the extras.

Spotlight isn't working, its only showing web results/wikipedia and dictionary if its a word.

I have mountain lion cache cleaner and I try recollecting metadata or whatever but it doesn't work. :/

Nine times out of ten I would hit Space and it would end up making a new playlist in my iTunes and playing the song. Then I would rip my hair out and scream.

So now I've fixed that by just using the really nice Shifting Tiles screensaver with my folder of Desktop Pictures on rotation. It's very pleasant to look at.

Make sure your HDD wasn't accidentally added to the Privacy list. If it hasn't, ADD it which will supposedly clear Spotlight's database for your internal drive, and then delete it to let it reindex.

Anyone know of a keyboard shortcut for moving between multiple fullscreen windows of the SAME app? Similar to the CMD-Tab hotkey? Like say for instance I had multiple Chrome windows open and want to shuffle only within Chrome without any trackpad swipeage. Possible?

Don't know what you mean with recollecting metadata, but rebuilding the Spotlight index usually helps for problems like this. Just add the whole HD in the privacy tab of the Spotlight prefpane and remove it again.

Yeah I did that but nothing is happening with spotlight, it isn't indexing at all. :(

maybe related but what is mds? I see it using a lot of memory?

That's strange. mds is actually Spotlight's indexing process. So far this method always worled for me. Maybe it'll show search results in a few minutes, but the Spotlight search field really should say it's indexing..

Get a cheapo one that you can flash DD-WRT or Tomato onto, and you won't have to worry much about the management interface.

It's not possible to drag the file from the URL bar to download window to initiate download in Safari anymore, is it? In combination with page resources window, this was great for saving youtube videos locally.

You can copy and paste the URL into the download window and it should start. Or an easier way is to just press option + enter in the address bar.

What the hell is going on here? This never happened to me prior to upgrading to ML (running on an early, pre-unibody 2008 MPB). I have no sound, which is a problem seeing as how this MBP is my media hub.

Thanks for the response, but that shortcut scrolls through ALL apps — I just wanna swap between multiple windows of a single app, regardless if other apps are stationed between them. Is there no such thing?

Ah, damn. Sorry, I should have kept in mind that keyboard shortcuts which use special characters usually are different for different keyboard layouts. I think it's cmd+tilde and cmd+shift+tilde for the US layout; if not just check the window menu of any multi-window app, there should be a "next window" menu item.

Anyone noticed decreased battery life after this upgrade?

I checked my battery before the upgrade and it showed 8 hours right after the speedy upgrade it showed 3:40. I restarted and now it shows 6:00

I let it rest for a bit and checked activity monitor but nothing was running. Basttery is at 97% MBP late 2011
I saw this post, and I'm not sure if it's been addressed before or since. I apologize if this has been discussed; I don't have time to read through the entire thread right now. I'll check back and read through later when I have more time.

I upgraded from Snow Leopard a month-ish ago, and my battery lately has been absolute crap. I have a 13" MacBook Pro that's about 2 1/2 years old. Maybe the decreased battery life is because of something else, but I don't know of anything I've been doing differently with my laptop lately other than the OS X upgrade. At 99% battery life right now, it's showing 3:46. That's significantly less than before I upgraded.

Is this a common problem? Should I try and go back to Snow Leopard?

I didn't knew you could do that!

I'll check various models today then. Wi-Fi and two or three ethernet ports are really all I need.

Sorry to double post but I think I'm onto something with my Wi-Fi problem!

I'm basically victim of what's described here and here.

I tried to put the 10.0.4.10 address you can see on Apple's website screenshots and lo and behold, internet sharing "works". Light turns green and I get something (terribly slow) on my iPhone.

I suppose all I need to know is a good IPv4 address, but since I don't have any control on the network I don't know how to look that up. Any idea?

I don't know about you guys, but ever since I installed Mountain Lion I've not been able to access the App Store. It says that an "unknown error has occurred" when I try to log in.
