Great episode. Don really is a hypocritical asshole lol. Poor Megan.

I really liked Don's Heinz ad though. He's pretty much trying to ingrain in the consumer's mind that ketchup and Heinz are one in the same. Which is pretty damn awesome for a company as long as your brand doesn't go too far and become too genericized.

Damn I totally forgot about that. I hope she throws that right in his face!

I think they will find some way to resolve this between Joan and Harry. Perhaps an apology from Harry to Joan who then lobbies for Harry's partnership... only if he agrees to let her be at his side in the television department.

Also loved the pitch scene. So good. Seems like every pitch Don does these days the client questions him and he has to sit there pandering to them, trying to get them to buy into his idea. Seems like less and less we see the brilliant early seasons Don who earns over a room with how sincere and genuine his idea is. He comes across at times as going through the motions, like even he doesn't really believe his pitch. It also seems like he is realizing it and is insecure about his work, staying behind to listen in on Peggy's idea. Hell she even used one of his old lines. In the end it doesn't really matter which add we thought was better, it matters which one the client did. And it was painfully obvious that Peggy was the one who made the rousing, room winning speech even before the scene was over. Was there really a doubt in anyone's mind who was getting the account? Such a great episode

It doesn't matter. The only person who lost is Peggy because she lost Stan and Heinz.

just to clarify the confusion on who won the pitch, I rewatched that scene on the DVR and the other third agency JWT won the account. i thought that Peggy's firm won initially but on the repeat watch, I noticed the general mood of Ted also didn't match a "win"

The writing is also high-level. Somebody posted the transcript of the exchange between Don and Ted. Initially you think Ted and Peggy won until you understand what Don met by saying, "speak for yourself," upon leaving the bar.

Oh lawd, it seems even the pros heard it wrong like we did. Just read my first of the usual review round-up:

Later, at a diner, the SCDP team learns that Peggy’s pitch sold in the room.

For the first time, maybe the writers were a bit too subtle. Lots of people are going to tune in next week wondering why the heck Heinz is never mentioned again by either company

Great episode. I love Joan-centric episodes, and I was starting to wonder if she was going to get any significant screen-time this season. The conflict with Harry was hard to watch play out. His secretary deserved to be sacked and the fact that Harry was able to override her and then, adding further insult to injury, use what she did to save their biggest account as a jab against her really drove home that her partnership is just a title. It was nice to see Bertram subtly put Harry in his place in the end, though.

Still, I stand by what I said about the premier: at this point I can't feel anything but completely and total exhaustion with Don's story. It still feels like a complete retread. Not interesting in the slightest.

Seeing Megan navigate being the wife of a prick and trying to make it as an actress remains interesting and keeps the show from feeling too heavy, and it was great seeing Peggy come into her own and going head-to-head with Don. So there are some interesting threads being weaved around Don...but, other than that, I can't muster anything but "meh" for more Don being a complete pig in the same way he's always been a complete pig and hiding behind the need for some sort of existential epiphany. Get over it, Don.

It's funny that Ted even said straight out that JWT won it and people still missed it ><.

Must be people's own expectations about Peggy winning it causing this confusion.

Finally got around to re-watch the series and the show from the very beginning could (and should!) be about Peggy. It would be swell if by the end of the series, she takes over for Don.

I believe this man is correct.

Don't believe this man.

LOL

It's true, though. They have Chaough-ugh-uh mention it once and then don't make it clear at all what exactly happened. Sure, he clearly says what happened, but when you're trying to piece everything together in real time details get lost XD

Even though I caught that Peggy's team also lost, I thought it was tough to pick out and unless you paid attention it was hard to catch. It was only the "largest ad agency" bit that made me realize they lost (at first I thought they won).

It was a good scene but I think they could have made it clearer they both lost.

How is there any confusion about this? I thought that Peggy may have won based on her pitch but as soon as they entered in the bar and asked if they could join the lonely hearts club, it was pretty clear they didn't win. Then they explicitly said the name of the big firm which won. Not exactly subtle.

I do think that this and the quote about "have to get bigger to get bigger" could be setting up a merger of the two small firms. Would be interesting to see Peggy and Don back together:

gonna admit I thought team Peggy won before reading this thread

I dunno something about her smirk through that whole bar scene coupled with don being super salty

the lonely hearts club comment could easily be interpreted as gloating

Cause of Stan.

Also, that dinner scene of Megan with the swingers was not flattering at all for Megan. Her make-up looked horrible.

Great episode.

Sometimes I can see some Pete like behaviour in Don. Calling his wife a whore, then sleeping with another man's wife, with all that self-pity, is such a Pete move.

Awesome episode, I loved seeing all the new storylines starting up. Really happy that Dawn is getting some attention. The Joan/Harry storyline is really interesting too.

Don on the other hand is still a prick. A selfish, spiteful ass. The way he continuously lashes out at everyone around him to fill the emptiness of his own shortcomings is truly wretched.

Damn I totally forgot about that. I hope she throws that right in his face!
Harry didn't do that to spite Joan. He has no idea that she was so passionate about it, and she didn't say anything to him afterward. It was a really sad storyline, but it wasn't about Harry trying to take something away from Joan.

Random, but did I not see Allison Brie's name in the opening credits as a Guest Star for this episode? I don't remember her being in the episode at all unless I spaced out somewhere.

I don't see why they can't just give in to his demands. Bert's not long for this world, and Lane's dead, so they'll need fresh blood to lead anyway.
In a TV show, for the tension it creates.

In real life, because their egos are too big to start planning for their own imminent uselessness.

Asked the same thing, I think it's just a goof.

Someone brought this to my attention earlier, but have we seen or have they said the company name out loud this season? I wonder if Pryce is still part of it.

good FUCKING GOD Don needs to SIT DOWN.

YOU ARE CHEATING ON YOUR WIFE. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO GET POSSESSIVE OVER HER.

I hope she finds out and clocks his ass. I am so mad. He's such a fucking cunt.

EDIT: I typed this as I was watching the scene where they argue in Megan's dressing room. SO HE LEAVES AFTER TELLING HER THAT TO GO CHEAT ON HER AGAIN?

I can't. Throw him into a furnace.

Why are we going back to this? We've already done the Don is a hypocritical cunt season. I guess you could hammer home that the guy is broken regardless of who he's with but didn't we already know that? It's getting boring.

It's just that Megan is so sweet and I like her a lot more than I did Betty, and didn't really care that he cheated on her. I liked the show better with them apart.

Different motivations. And possibly/probably different consequences. I agree with you, but I'm willing to be patient.

I'm kind of disappointed we didn't get to see Raymond dump SCDP in person.

Good riddance. What a putz.

Still, Ken had every right to be incensed. That's pretty low of them to do it without his knowledge.

art direction for scdp was better, and the concept might have been more clever, but psychologically peggy's was more interesting to me because she was playing to the ego of the heinz man

God damn this episode :D

Best parts were Joanny on fire, Harry on fire and Don being a cunt all over the place. And Joan's friend was pretty hot I'd say.

How much was that check that the partners gave Harry? $26,000, I think?

Adjusted for inflation, that's about $176,000. Jesus Christ, Harry, shut the fuck up.

Loved the scene between Stan and Don smoking and Stan moments later, "We should order lunch." and the two of them proceeding to burst out in laughter.
