It really is truly unbelievable what Madden has become this generation. Those numbers are freaking amazing! There has to be some explanation for how it's come to dominate not only the football genre or the sports genre, but it actually dominates the VG industry. This was not true last generation and certainly not the one before that. I don't think it's a matter of Gameday either. I think the folks from EA must have hired Phillip Morris employees as I'm truly at a loss for the kind of marketshare gains that Madden has been able to achieve.

Each generation gaming becomes more and more mainstream. There was a stigma involved in the word "gaming" during my childhood years. Now, it's almost "cool" to own a Playstation, and beat up hookers in GTA.

Sports is a huge interest for the mainstream gaming crowd of the US (young males). Football is the biggest sport, and Madden is dominating that genre right now, but yes the sales are incredible.

5 frickin million copies for a game you release every year. OUCH! That has to hurt the companies out there putting their heart and soul into a game they worked 3 years on hoping to eek out 200k sales or something.

well you have to take in consideration that is across 6 SKUs for last year (PC, PS2, GC, Xbox, PSX, GBA), while in '99 it was probably on 3 maybe.

But half of those platforms got less than 10% of the sales (GCN, PSX,GBA), so you're really only talking about 3 platforms when it comes down to it. PS2, PC, & Xbox.

Yes, but the PS2 version sold 3.5 million on the ps2 (or so I was told earlier), so that's still a very healthy increase.

edit: As SonyCowboy said.. GBA and PSX sales can't amount to much at all. I have no idea how many GC copies sold.. it may be a very small percentage also.

It's true, the more mainstream videogaming becomes, the more sports games benefit. I know a group of 8 guys or so who meet 2 or 3 times a week to play Winning Eleven, and only Winning Eleven. And 6 of them never play any other videogame.
