Some great points, but im not talking about xbox. Im highlighting the dissappintment from fans and how this erodes the satisfaction with the console.

The problem is a logistical one. If you assume extending dev timescales are an industry-wide problem then obviously productivity is going to go down and gaps will start to appear in release schedules. So, what's the solution? You acquire more studios which increases burn-rate and adds burden on management and publishing, or create partnerships with third parties to fill the holes short-term and hopefully deepen the relationship in the long run.

Sony have picked the latter and MS the former, and I think its pretty obvious which one is work out better thus far.

As to disappointment from fans... First of all I think with a lot of people expectations are seriously out-of-whack. Games have never looked or run better on average but, of course, its never enough! As to the content, again the reality is that any project coming out now would have been greenlit back in 2020 or so, and in many instances you cannot pivot midway through without a huge amount of waste.

Sony have had a great generation thanks to great hardware and a competitor that completely shat the bed. Sony started extremely strong. Good launch software and then foundered the first 5 years with mediocre sequels that received hype and benefitted from the sony lead industry of "journalists" who review sonys titles favouribly.

5 years sounds terrible, but when that's a standard AAA dev-cycle with Covid disruption factored in... Its just reality we all have to deal with.

The evidence is with every poll and the backlash on titles like ghost of yotei. Which i am personally extremely excited about.

The problem is that the "backlash" to Yotei is fucking stupid. There's no sugar-coating the fact that if people are bent out of shape over the gender of the lead they aren't making a credible argument... they are using the same retarded playbook as the wokies bitching about "gruff white male" leads being passe a few years back.

As to the lack of perceived advancement, it should be fairly obvious that the comparator should be how the older game was running on its target hardware back at launch, and not any remaster or patched re-issue running on current gen hardware!

The basic reality is that relative improvement is what it is. A team who wrote optimized code for PS4 is unlikely to suddenly start writing unoptimized code on PS5, outside of extenuating circumstances where they are desperately crunching to hit a deadline. There's a weird persecution complex that some "gamers" seem to have where they irrationally acsribe everything that doesn't make them perfectly happy to malice.

Its stupid, victim-mentality, bullshit and I have no time for it.

Maybe we agree to disagree. I think ypu made amazing points about sony vs xbox but thats not what I was really trying to say.

Nintendo and Sony are not the same. Nintendo manages their studios and output extremely well. I cant say the same for sony or Microsoft this gen.

All good. But I personally think people acting like Sony's first-party plan this gen has been egregiously bad, are overreacting. Not to say their plans have been perfect, but it seems to me that little flurry of titles at the end of the PS4's life made this mostly inevitable. Take Naughty Dog for example; it was known at the time the whole studio was crunching to get that title out of the door in 2020. Then there was the pandemic and so even more time was lost with reorganizing to remote working etc. Then of course there was the elongated process of Factions 2 being spun out from its original "bonus mode" status on TLOU2, rescoping to a GAAS, then a labour/cost analysis showing that supporting it would require turning ND into Bungie... A typical shit-tastic result that just underscores my earlier about about pivoting approach mid-cycle tending to just short-cut devs into production hell.

Point being, errors made in the PS4 era often take years to become evident to the market. Same deal with Days Gone 2... the fallout between local studio management and creative that led to John Garvin's departure and the lack of progress to a sequel getting made was a PS4 problem. The studios creative leads both exit under a cloud and the next project flounders... well colour me shocked!

I mention these because these two studios seem to be the only ones that weren't acquired or hired to support the GAAS initiative that business's desire for greater profitability demanded.

If you remain flat but rise subscription price, you have more total revenue.

If you count PlayStation and Nintendo users who buy/play one of your games or ABK or Zenimax, new or legacy ones, you have more users than ever.

As in Q4, when they said PlayStation did make up of 63% of software income. That may mean a lot for MS Gaming, but truth is Xbox is having less and less weight in that.

Not really surpised you're better of with a gaming PC or playstation. I really think xbox 360 only done so well due to the rise of online gaming at the time.

I can remember, in the group I know, them saying the servers are better because it's MS and Sonys servers lags. It really felt like the 360 was the console to get for online play and obviously the new IPs at the time and earlier release than PS3 would help.

Anyway I've always thought and many others have for a while that they would be better of with a PC/console hybrid like what is rumoured. I doubt anything will save them from exiting the hardware business eventually though.

Oh please, this is an exact same situation as the 7th gen, the HD power brands ("HD twins" remember?) fighting each other while Nintendo was on the side, doing something else, the only direct competition to an Xbox system, is a PS system, Nintendo plays by their own rules in their own field by themselves, that's why any other company stupid enough to go there is doomed (Sony rumors about doing a new portable, that's Vita 2.0 waiting to happen), MS doing these 3P HW collabs work for them because they're not subsidizing that and if it fails it's not their problem

Series X/S lose to the PS5 and MS is gonna try to shake things up once again with a PCMR branded Xbox (and handheld that has fad written all over it) to see if they can get somewhere, because the traditional model isn't working for them anymore, otherwise they wouldn't bother changing and if all that keeps failing, they are MS Gaming now, a Third Party Developer releasing games for PCMR + PS5 + SW2

It's not even just a differing of opinions, but a clear style. Then they project. Rinse/repeat. Only a few users do this, so that's why they stand out. Telltale signs are stuff like "you're on meds", "you're schizo". Then they act like having a preference, particularly for Xbox, somehow makes them a victim and everyone is out to get them. Never mind that we have legit Xbox fans here who don't even come close to behaving like that. It's like dealing with belligerent schoolchildren.

That said, I get the lurking approach. And for the PS5 stuff? Completely agree! Enjoy it much more than I did the 4 or 2 (yes, that's PS2, GameCube was my favorite console that gen)!

Yeah, I was initially against the critics who were talking down on their in-house stuff, but that was through 2023. In 2025, it does feel like things have slowed and the GaaS push is one of the obvious reasons. Sounds like that's about to change though, so I'm thinking '26-'27 will be a return to form.

My experience with Xbox customers on this forum is their frequent additions of the Empathy emote on my posts. At least until the Xbox 3rd party incident last year. Then it quiets down.

My interpretation is that they are suppose to feel sorry for me that i am not in their cult? That i am not saved by the holy word of Phil? Because since i have no current skin in the Console wars, i really don't know what they are feeling empathy for. (That guy with a Final Fantasy black mage avatar, especially. Don't know where he is gone these days. )

Could someone explain the Alt account thing? People don't just say what they are thinking? Do they actually censor themselves and use an alt to speak freely?

I will say that I don't know the culture stuff going on and I was deployed to areas where I couldn't keep up with everything. So, I'm at a loss why folks would censor themselves on a gaming forum. I can understand in social settings, speaking in a certain manner and watching what comes out of your face, but this seems crazy to me.

I think mostly it's the idea that the alts are people who were previously banned from NeoGAF.
