Drafted Simic tonight. Did well up until I was up against a Gruul player. Spell Rupture was doing a lot of work for me, tempo-wise. It helps that I got 3 Drakewings, so it was just about always a mana leak or better. Against the Gruul guy though he was all bloodrush, so they were pretty much dead cards since it was all bloodrush. I meant to board them out for Ætherize and Hindervines, but got distracted and forgot to. Ended up taking second.

So I went 4-1 tonight with a deck I didn't think was that good. Kinda surprised myself though. Made the right moves, held back when I needed to. Did have some help with the shop owner letting me borrow a play set of loxodon smitters. Won $25 store credit. Felt really good to win!

Okay so a few more questions that popped up due to yesterday's answers...

1. In general, if your creature was blocked by two or more creatures, you do damage to them in the order of your choosing (ie do enough damage to kill one, move on to the next, etc.) correct?

2. Does this not change with deathtouch (unless using the aforementioned trample?) As in, if I have a 5/5 deathtouch creature and I'm blocked by four 2/2s, if I don't have trample, I would be doing 2 damage to one (dead), 2 damage to a second (dead), one damage to a third (dead) and the fourth would be fine? But then if it had trample, it would kill all four with one damage each and then do one damage to the player?

1. Yes
2. If you have deathtouch you only need to do 1 damage to each creature so they all die

If I recall correctly, the rule used to be "you divide the damage how you choose among blockers". Nowadays, however, you do not - you choose the order of blockers, and then lethal damage is assigned to the first in that order, then the second, and so on. Because deathtouch makes one point of damage lethal, you can kill as many blockers as you have power, regardless of their toughness.

This. Technically the rule is that you have to deal lethal damage, not specifically damage equal to their toughness, and since 1 damage is lethal due to deathtouch, you will kill all 4 blockers.

So I sleeved up The Aristocrats at FNM and mostly coasted to the finals, breaking Esper Control in half.

During the second game of the finals with me being up a game, I came to the startling realization that the deck gets absolutely wrecked by Curse of Death's Hold. Holy crap that card is an absolute beating vs The Aristocrats.

My Champion of the Parish, Lingering Souls, Sorin, Aristocrats in hand were absolutely useless. It was the most crushing hard counter ever.

One of my friends finished off his set of Power 9, so we celebrated today by doing a big Cube draft/pizza/beer/vodka day at a friend's house, with prizes from his trading binder (no entry, we're all good friends). I couldn't stay for the second draft, but for the first I did a BWG reanimator-ramp deck. My favorite play was a turn one Black Lotus, Ancient Tomb-> Garruk Wildspeaker, -1 make a dude, turn 2 play forest, attack, make mana, Garruk +1, Natural Order the token into Progenitus. My first three picks were Recurring Nightmare, Bitterblossom, and Griselbrand. The deck wasn't amazing, but it was damn fun if it got going.

damn Americans, must be nice

We get more GP's, but our public transportation fucking sucks to actually get to them.

Okay, about to attack with an exalted creature, friend wants to dimir charm him. When does the exalted take place?

Does he have to dimir charm before I announce that I am attacking with whoever (knight of infamy in this case), or can it work like, I choose to attack, exalted goes on the stack, dimir charm is cast so that triggers before the exalted and is able to kill him before his power is increased?

Exalted triggers go on the stack, so you have an opportunity to snipe it after it's been declared, before it gets the power boost.

I'm sure people get asked this all the time, but where is a good online place to buy cards? I'm looking to build a new deck, based off some previous suggestions people have given on here. I'm looking on Ebay and Amazon, but I hate buying from multiple sellers and I can't seem to find one seller on Ebay or Amazon with all the cards I need. Suggestions?

I usually just buy locally, but here are online places I know exist (some are aggregates of multiple shops):

http://starcitygames.com (probably the most popular, but generally considered high)
http://tcgplayer.com (aggregate)
http://blackborder.com (agregate, but with their own shop, AdventureOn, integrated)
http://channelfireball.com
http://magictraders.com
http://coolstuffinc.com
http://trollandtoad.com
http://dacardowrld.com
http://abugames.com
http://mtgfanatic.com

I've ordered from trollandtoad twice in the past and have been happy with the experience. Though ordering from Canada, it takes like three weeks for my orders to arrive.

Of those, I've used SCG, TCGPlayer, CFB, TNT, and ABU Games via TCG player. I also use Cardshark at times, which is another aggregrate site.

Looks like the You Make The Card first choice was a tie, so they're doing a runoff vote between Land and Enchantment. I'm going Land again, but I'm really glad it's one of those two and not a repeat card type.

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/239

You Make The Card 4 - Card Type
Type - Votes - Percentage
Land 23564 26.56%
Enchantment 23538 26.53%
Creature 20744 23.38%
Artifact 10511 11.85%
Instant/Sorcery 10356 11.68%
Total 88713 100.0%

Only 26 votes separated the top two, crazy.

Went land the first time, but I'm picking enchantment now. I want enchantress to be better supported in my cube.

Speaking of which.....

I tested it out today at gaming weekend (and got three more signups for Ante League), and even though me showing up ~8 hours late meant I was only able to find three other people to draft with, Commander Cube was a huge success.

I drafted jund dragons (general: Adus Oakenshield) with a recursion subtheme: I was able to survive a number of boardwipes using the kind of hilarious synergy between Eternal Witness and Deadwood Treefolk, and managed to get second place despite Genesis Wave-ing for a total of 15 over two turns.

MVP cards: dragon roost, gaea's cradle, deadwood treefolk, eternal witness.

Somehow, the winner managed to draft Grand Arbiter taxing control, which was odd -- it isn't even a supported strategy! Beacon of Immortality and Rhox Faithmender got him to a life total high enough that even Devil's Play with every land in my deck out couldn't finish him off. Another player was able to mill him, but that player died right as he was down to the last few cards in his library.

The last card in his hand?

White Sun's Zenith, which he was (pretty easily) able to grind me out with. Such a damn fun game.

Other decks:

I did a poor job explaining the rules for color identity, so one player drafted every fetch, signet, and talisman he saw. He ended up choosing one of the Nephilim -- the one with no green -- as his commander (obviously I allowed it!) Despite being 4-color goodstuff, his deck managed to have a crazy amount of synergy. His first few turns went something like this:

Corpse Connoisseur for Rune-Scarred Demon
Unburial Rites
Conjurer's Closet (blink rune-scarred)
Angel of Despair

Was nuts.

Last player chose grimgrin. Went pretty well, and he had a blast with his ridiculously synergistic pile of reanimation. Sadly, he was pretty manascrewed early game, so he was unable to do much until there was already quite a bit of control and recursion going on.

I also have three people signed up for my ante league, starting on Wednesday @_@ hopefully that'll be fun too!

They -really- don't want Land to win the vote.

So I just voted for land in spite (originally voted for Creature which is what should have won sigh).

What do you pick?

Entomb
Ranger's Path
Talisman of Progress
Soul Foundry
Supreme Verdict
Stuffy Doll
Snapcaster Mage
Rhox Faithmender
Fire/Ice
Goblin Tutor
Grixis Charm
Worship
Rebuking Ceremony
Orzhov Signet
Leonin Sun Standard

Entomb, but probably not committed to reanimator just yet. It's just the highest power level card in the pack (I say blindly not knowing how much support this particular cube has for reanimator strategies). Nothing else here seems incredibly powerful. Second choice is probably Supreme Verdict or Fire//Ice. If I know that Ramp is viable in this cube, Ranger's Path is a decent choice as well, although probably not firstpickable (seeing Ranger's Path makes me think that either the cube builder thought Skyshroud Claim was too strong, which means ramp is going to be bad, or he loves ramp and added a ton of support for it - too high variance to really validate the choice).

I forgot to mention -- that's an example pack from my EDH cube, so it's a very slow format. There's a lot of removal/interaction.

My pick order here:

1: Soul Foundry. 100% of the time.

It keeps my colors open, it creates creatures at instant speed, and, despite artifact hate being fairly common in the cube, it has the potential of running away with the game.

2: Entomb.

Reanimator and recursion are very strong strategies, and one mana tutors are always good. There's a chance this won't make it into my 60, but if it does, it's likely to be one of the best cards in the deck.

Next are snapcaster mage, rebuking ceremony, and the mana fixing artifacts.

Grixis Charm is probably the worst/most boring card in the cube. I really need to replace it.

I was thinking that the pack looked weird.

How does your EDH cube work? Do you draft extra packs to make bigger decks, and then draft commanders afterwards?

You draft five packs and make a 60-card deck. I might raise it to 65, though -- the power level was a bit higher than I wanted it to be, leaving cards like Rakdos' Return, High Market, and Burning Cinder Fury of Crimson Chaos Fire on chopping blocks.

You then choose your commander -- anything legal, I have all the popular choices sleeved up. If you want to make a non-standard choice, just use your phone.

I don't think drafting commanders is necessary -- if multiple players are trying to draft the same strategy, it's likely I made some major mistakes when constructing the cube.

What piece of Eggs will get hit next update?

This is a not a question of whether or not the deck gets hit, btw. It's getting hit. I think you take out Bloom.

The 'fast mana' card is the first you take out 100% of the time. Lotus Bloom is the obvious choice for wizards to hit if they want to cripple eggs.

I actually wouldn't mind them just going ahead and hitting all the zero-cost Cascade cards at once.

I felt weird about having to look up rulings tonight when someone cast Intuition with one card left in their library.

The one that had us stymied for a while was what happens if my opponent attacks and I don't block, and have Phyrexian Unlife out and Pariah's Shield equipped to a Phytohydra. We eventually figured out that because Unlife says "as though it had infect" and not "recieve that many poison counteres instead" the hydra still sees the infect damage as damage, so the replacement triggers.

So what does happen if they only have one card left? Fail to find?

Just ban Second Sunrise. You don't kill the deck, but you put it back to a lower power level than it had before Faith's Reward was printed.

Lotus Bloom is the perfect "turn 4 combo kill" card. The issue with Eggs isn't power level, but the time it takes to win in a tournament setting.

I see zero reason to ban Living End or Restore Balance. Nobody has managed to build a deck with those cards in it that puts up good results.

EDIT: Eating my words? Did Living End actually win a MTGO PTQ over the weekend? How good did he have to run to win with that POS?

Ok guys so I'm running a Gatecrash White/Black Deck revolving around Ghost Council. What I'm finding out the hard way is that my deck is lethal but the deck speed is slow as shit and I'm getting crushed before I can even start Extorting people. What are some good White or Black singles I can look for at a comic store to help my deck out? I would give the deck layout but I'm getting ready to go to bed.
