Major developments and milestones since Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced

In the time period between 2006 and 2010, "Barclays Center" as an idea for a new entertainment complex and hub in Brooklyn amounted to little more than an undeveloped hole in the ground, numerous rallies and protests against the project, and was almost shuttered by the combination of the 2009 recession and a court case against the use of eminent domain to further the project. It all seemed doomed to limbo despite being in plans or proposals since 2004 and optimistically pinned for a 2006 opening. The court has since:

- Seen its opening day in September 2012 (featuring a live performance from Jay-Z who had actually "retired" from the music in 2003 only to return in 2006), two years after the initial ground breaking and first development after beating the opposition in court cases.

- Has surpassed Madison Square Garden as the highest grossing venue in the United States for concerts and family shows (not including sports shows) based on sales data from November 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013

- Hosted a WWE PPV event in December 2012 and a WWE RAW in July 15, 2013

- Hosted the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, 2013, bringing the show to a New York City borough other than Manhattan for the first time

- (assuming FFXV doesn't come out in 2015) will become the primary home for the New York Islanders hockey team after said team parted ways with their previous home Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum of 43 years.

We went from 386 Pokemon to 721.

Plus around 30+ Mega Pokemon.

...holy fuck.

CoM and KH2 both already came out by that time. Unless you're counting the remasters (I wouldn't), but then you might as well count KH1 as well.

Sorry, not chain of Memories, my mistake.

But didn't KH2 come out Fall '06? At least in the US....

Hm, fake edit, I wonder if that remaster that turned CoM's battle system and game into complete 3D should count? That may have taken some real work.

If you were in cryostasis from may 2006, and woke up now, you would not have known that lebron won two rings with a team other than the cavs.

I'm starting to delete posts which actually discuss the development of FFXV. Remember, that's not what this thread is for! :)

Sorry about that if my post about a possible documentary about it was off topic.

This thread was just so crazy to see how much has happened since its announcement I couldn't help but wonder out loud.

I seriously just want to know what goes on at Square day to day, week to week, month to month. Do they not have goals or deadlines? I just honestly don't understand. Whoever is managing is fucking failing.

Both Starcraft II and Diablo III released.
Diablo III had come an astounding 11 years after it's predecessor.

Final Fantasy XIV has released, flopped, was literally meteor'd, and was remade in an amazing game.

During the same timespan before the announcement of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the following games were released as mainline Square:

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XI
Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy Tactics
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts II
... holy shit. Someone whip up that studio.

Micheal Jackson died :(

Anime was 'saved' then it was actually saved for realsies.

Evangelion is getting an entire sequel in four movies - with the fourth one coming out next year at this rate.

We finished the entire harry potter series and movies.

And eragon (well never had a sequel to the movie)

VR gaming became a reality.

The rise of UFC and Floyd Mayweather.

Brock lesner happened, and he came back to the wwe and supplexed the daylights out of John Cena.

Jay-Z blackballed and/or signed every competitor to Beyonce, and they had a kid!

Kanye West married Kim kardasian.

Snowden exposed the surveillance state.

First African American president.

And finally... Australia elected the us equivalent of George W Bush Jr.

Canada managed to get someone worse... Let that sink in.

The Voyager 1 has reached interstellar space since the announcement of Vs13...

To be fair, it left Earth when Nomura was just 7 years old.

It's the Versus XIII of spacecraft.

Also, it seems that Nomura is also beholden to the harsh limits of slower-than-light speed travel.

to be fair it takes a good deal of effort to craft a FF game, that's why FF games are actually remembered years later and not just flavor of the month like a lot of games.

Yeah but 8 years?

Also, New Super Mario Bros DS released just over a week after the FFVsXIII announcement. The PS2 port of Liberty City Stories released a month after the announcement.

We've got 3 more NSMB games and a DLC expansion since then. Plus 3 GTA games and 2 expansions, with a PS4/XB1 port of GTA5 coming soon and possibly expansions for it. Not to mention the mobile ports of GTA.

there has been three world cups since the announcement in 2006

...holy fuck.

Holy shit. I remember when Barclays Center was nothing but a huge ass empty lot on Atlantic Ave. This put shit in perspective. Shit, both Yankee and Shea Satdium were torn down and rebuilt in the same time span.

If the second avenue subway gets finished before this game, I'd die of laughter.

Green Skittles eaten in 2006 in the United States were lime. Whenever Final Fantasy XV releases, they'll be green apple flavored.

Hurricane Ike (third costliest hurricane for the US; September 2008) & Sandy (second costliest hurricane in the US history; 2012) happened in between the game's announcement to now. A year before the announcement, Wilma (the most powerful hurricane recorded in the Atlantic Basin), and Katrina (costliest hurricane ever for the United States) had both occurred in the same hurricane season.

Twitter was first prototyped and tested between March and July 2006 after which it went public.

In 2006, when Versus XIII was announced, F-Zero was dead.

Now it's 2014. F-Zero still dead.

Maybe that deserves its own thread.

- In 2011 Xenoblade was released setting the new standard for the JRPG genre.

...and we're still waiting for FFXV (too much time in production = outdated on release).

How is that? It's not like Xenoblade is any kind of graphical benchmark. If the mechanics are solid it'll be great whenever it comes out, and given Square Enix's one consistency(outside of LR/Drakengard 3) is incredible presentation then I don't see a real reason to worry about it lacking in that manner.

holy shit, this is the most frightening thread i have read this and last month.
i mean...

HOOOOOOOLLLLYYYYY SHIT.

There's a game called FFXII.

.... What...? I really liked Xenoblade, but "new standard"? Not even close.

Destiny was first referenced in 2009 in Halo: ODST by looking on a sign at the wall that had the words "Destiny Awaits" and showed a picture of Earth with a mysterious orb floating nearby. It is now releasing in 5 - 6 days depending on where you live.

The following scripted, US primetime television shows were still on the air when Versus was announced:

Grey's Anatomy
The Simpsons
Family Guy
Two and Half Men
24
NCIS
Bones
Law & Order: SVU
Criminal Minds
American Dad!

Only one of those is on cable: American Dad!, and that came from Fox.

Half Life Episode 3 was announced in the same month, and it's only a year and a half less since Episode 2's cliffhanger ending. So to give a Valve-esque spin on this:

Valve released Team Fortress 2, which was itself teased for over 8 years, and issued more than 40 major content updates and nearly 1000 hats and cosmetic items.
Valve not only developed but made sequels to two new IP's, Left 4 Dead and Portal.
On a tangentially related Dota 2 note, League of Legends wouldn't exist for another 3 years hence.
The Steam friends list and the entirety of the Steam Community did not yet exist.
About the only non-Valve games on Steam were obscure indies like Darwinia, and there were no large publisher titles at all.
It would be another 3 years before the first major Steam Sale.

The first Rickrolling happened a year after its announcement.

Fucking hell

- The Curiosity rover was designed, engineered, fabricated, tested, integrated, launched and landed on the planet Mars.

This is also pretty good.

I'm so sick of being so hopeful that this will show up at events. I don't even get my hopes up anymore.

That said, I'm not ruling out it appearing at TGS until SE comes out and tells us that it wont be there like they did at TGS 2013 and E3 2014

In 2006:

Lance Armstrong had just completed his nigh unbeatable record run of 7 consecutive Tour de France wins from 1999-2005.

Today:

Nobody won the Tour de France from 1999-2005. Lance Armstrong has never won a Grand Tour.

The one that melts my brain every time is that smartphones had not yet been introduced to the public.

FF Type-0 (which was announced at the same time as versus) was originally intended to be a non-smartphone game (!) and now is on its way to becoming a PS4/Xbox One game. that one is hard to wrap my head around

As for world events...
The Great Recession of 2008 happened, several world economies tanked.

Eight years ago I was 25. Fuck me.

It's still feels odd that there has only been one console generation to have passed by in those eight years. Gen 7 really overstayed its welcome.

.... What...? I really liked Xenoblade, but "new standard"? Not even close.

Oh well, you can admit that per se Xenoblade didn't do anything new. You can even say that is not too original but its quality is to put together a lot of successfull idea we've seen in other jrpg games. You see, opposite from other videogame genres, the jrpg have known basically no evolution, except i guess for discarding turn based combat and random battle. Every series has always gone on his path, his branch, often ignoring what others did better (this happened even inside the FF series as well). Xenoblade put together all of this and make it work.

Miyazaki's first directed game came out the same year Versus was announced. Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 all came out before FF XV's release. Every Dark Souls 2 DLC and Bloodborne will have been out once FF XV hits the shelves.

Additionally, we'll probably even see a teaser for Dark Souls 3 or Bloodborne 2 before FF XV sees the light of day.

2009 - Molly the Were-Zompire & Epiphany in Spaaace! are released on XBLIG
2010 - Zeboyd Games is founded. Breath of Death VII & Cthulhu Saves the World are released on XBLIG
2011 - BoDVII & CSTW released on Steam. Zeboyd Games goes full-time. Revival of Penny Arcade series announced at PAX.
2012 - Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 released.
2013 - Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4 released. Cosmic Star Heroine kickstarter successfully raises over $100k.

So yeah, we started our indie studio & have released 4 RPGs since FFV13 was announced. I imagine we will have released at least 5 by the time it actually comes out.
