Major developments and milestones since Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced

To be fair, if every FF game took 8 years between announcement and release, we'd be looking forward to FFIV.

Yep. In the timespan it has taken so far to develop FFXV, Squaresoft Classic released all six 8/16-bit Final Fantasies.

Since FFXV has been announced Xenoblade has been announced and released.

Announced, released, and eligible for GAF Game of the Year in three consecutive calendar years!

Of the four major American/North American sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL), these are the only teams to not play in the postseason:

-Buffalo Bills

Oh, sure, rub it in.

The Buffalo Bills finally...wait no, they still haven't been in the playoffs since 2000 :(

EDIT: I thought I was going to be funny then I seriously noticed after posting that the Bills drought was already brought up. No I'm more sad.

Some time in the later half of next year the amount of time between the announcement of FF Versus XIII will be a longer span of them then the time between the release of Final Fantasy 7 and the original announcement of Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

1997-2006 = 9 years
2006-2015 = 9 years

It doesn't have to be game related, right?

In 2006 Michael Vick set the record for rushing yards by a quarterback while playing for the Atlanta Falcons. Since then, he plead guilty to dog fighting charges, was released by the Falcons, was banned from the NFL, spent nearly 2 years in prison, impossibly returned to the NFL as a backup for the Philadelphia Eagles, won the starting job and played very while (albiet somewhat inconsistently), lost the starting job in Philly, battled injuries, and was recently signed as the backup for the New York Jets.

Nintendo released the Wii and made billions of dollars, then they released the Wii U and lost billions (hundreds of millions?) of dollars.

In 2006:

Lance Armstrong had just completed his nigh unbeatable record run of 7 consecutive Tour de France wins from 1999-2005.

Today:

Nobody won the Tour de France from 1999-2005. Lance Armstrong has never won a Grand Tour.

Duke Nukem: Forever was released

Obama found Osama

My brother was not married when Versus was announced, now I play Mario Kart 8 with his son. Damn.

The story behind this game's development has to be nothing short of immense.

And yet, as was argued in a previous thread, the fact that FF Versus XIII, now FF XV, has not yet been released is not a sign of mismanagement or development hell but rather just SE having different priorities.

A whole generation. A WHOLE ENTIRE FUCKING GENERATION has passed.

And all we got were 3 shitty games in the XIII universe. Such a damn shame S-E.

Wat. Taking 8 years to release a game that maybe should have taken 4-5? You wouldn't call that mismanagement or development hell?

Or am I reading this wrong?

Nintendo released the Wii and made billions of dollars, then they released the Wii U and lost billions (hundreds of millions?) of dollars.

Nintendo lost 1.374 billion dollars since 2011.
Sony lost 13.35 billion dollars since 2011.
Microsoft lost nothing.

So essentially, Nomura and his team haven't made a proper console game since Kingdom Hearts 2... Which was released in Japan in 2005 and FFXV still isn't out.
Seriously, this is borderline masochistic behaviour. I doubt it'll be worth the wait (still waiting though...).

His team kept getting picked apart and thrown on other projects.....just sounded brutal how people kept disappearing to work on other stuff....I will be legitimately shocked if there is nothing at TGS

2006 on technology/gaming/entertainment front. It actually was a much different world back then, the pre-crisis mid '00's feels like a couple of decades ago rather than just 8 years.

- Nokia N93 was the best thing that money could buy in the "smartphone" market of the time.

- Sony was still the No.1 electronics company, while Apple was still selling PPC Macs.

- Samsung and LG were still TV-centered companies and 8 years later they dominate the mobile market.

- First HD-Ready TV's released, first BD players costed thousands of dollars.

- The High Definition Optical Disc Format War Rises. Poor HD-DVD.

- Mobile gaming was at the JAVA games stage.

- Grand Theft Auto LCS launches for the PS2, while VCS released for the PSP at the same year. San Andreas was still the latest release in the main series.

- GTAIV was announced in E3 2006, released two years later. (To put that in perspective, GTAV was released a full 5 years after IV).

- Brandon Roy has been drafted by the Trailblazers. (Since then, he retired, came back from retirement, retired again).

- Miami Heat won their first title and Gary Payton was still playing basketball. The first NBA finals broadcasting in HD.

- We lived in a world without Facebook/Twitter (while Facebook was still a pre-mainstream site and a niche place for IT students).

- The most dominant social platform at the time: MySpace.

- PS2 was the best-selling console of all-time (it still is lol)

- PS3 was released.

- PS3 was expected to deliver 1080p/120fps games. (PS4 struggles to do 1080/30).

- Kutaragi was the most mentioned person in the game industry.

- Cell was supposed to make some coffee in real-time.

- Rolling Stones were old. They still are.

- Justin Bieber turned 12.

I'm out.

2006: Gay marriage was only legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and Canada. Massachusetts was the only US state where gay marriage was legal and would be until 2008.

2014: Marriage equality is now legal in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, England and Wales, Scotland, and Uruguay. It is legal in the Mexican states of Coahuila, Quintana Roo, and Mexico City.

Marriage equality is also now legal in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Washington D.C., Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, as well as recognized by the US Federal Government.

Nintendo lost 1.374 billion dollars since 2011.
Sony lost 13.35 billion dollars since 2011.
Microsoft lost nothing.
This feels like a really silly comparison for a lot of reasons. Why compare these three companies that each have different focuses and diverse portfolios like this?

A whole generation. A WHOLE ENTIRE FUCKING GENERATION has passed.

And all we got were 3 shitty games in the XIII universe. Such a damn shame S-E.

I was attempting to humorously reference another poster in a previous thread who was not jokingly making that argument.

In 2006, E3 conferences were basically power point presentations.
This year's Sony E3 press conference was presented in movie theaters

His team kept getting picked apart and thrown on other projects.....just sounded brutal how people kept disappearing to work on other stuff....I will be legitimately shocked if there is nothing at TGS

It's sad how out of touch the management at Square seems to be. FFXIII got 2 friggin' sequels...TWO!
Was making a quick buck really worth tarnishing the name of their biggest franchise over?!
I seriously hope the game delivers on all fronts - reviews, sales etc, Final Fantasy needs a proper comeback! Too many great memories to let it end with Lightning...

All I'll add is that I was hired at a job, worked for that job 7 YEARS , was laid-off, was out of a job for a YEAR AND A HALF, was hired by another job in Jan, and so by DEC it would be at least A YEAR since I got hired. (and for sure XV isn't coming before my "1st anniversary")

oh also. FFXIV:ARR celebrates its first anniversary.

I also I see some that have faith XV will appear this TGS. Wanna join the avatar bet?

This thread is brutal lol. So much has happened since that announcement it's crazy. But, for all we know SE has already finished FFXV completely and are now figuring out how to make 3 games out of it plus DLC lol.

Won't even be mentioned at TGS.

-The Wii was released, lived a long life and prospered, then decayed and met its inevitable demise
-The WiiU was announced, released and struggled. It will probably still struggle when XV is finally released... and we'll probably see the announcement of the WiiU's successor shortly after (or, hell, maybe even shortly before if XV takes too long)
-Has already been said but... the iPhone was released in 2007. Then changed the mobile landscape by ushering the "smartphone era". Even mobile gaming got redefined (from "Snake" to a port of Bioshock for iOS... a game THAT ALSO RELEASED AFTER Versus XIII's announcement)
-Nokia stopped being the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, struggled, had various reorganizations, formed an alliance with Microsoft and then its mobile phone division was bought by the latter.
-The entire Android ecosystem has developed after Versus XIII's announcement. From 1.0 to L: a striking difference.
-Deus Ex got a proper sequel.
-Mario, Sonic, Megaman and Pac-man are going to appear together in the same game. THINK ABOUT IT.
-There has been two new entries in the Donkey Kong Country series. A series without an original game since 1996 (or 1999, if you count DK64 a part of it)
-DUKE NUKEM FOREVER WAS ACTUALLY RELEASED
-CHINESE DEMOCRACY BY GUNS N' ROSES WAS ALSO RELEASED

EDIT:
-David Tennant was "the Doctor" (Tenth) in Doctor Who during the time of Versus XIII's announcement. Since then, there have been THREE OTHER DOCTORS (Matt Smith, John Hurt, and now Peter Capaldi)
-Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston became tumblr sensations and the object of many girls (and boys) desire.

AMD won the CPU battle, then would lose it to Intel's war coffers

Valve was still mainly a single player developer

RISC architecture went from something for enterprise, macs, and dedicated equipment to being in about anything electronic

2 GB of RAM was a lot

Wikipedia's popularity bubble occurred

The CGI uncanny valley has been left

Doctor Who came back and became popular

Korean products went from footnotes to being quite popular (at least in the US)

This is the biggest one for me. This puts the whole thing in the greatest perspective of failure for me on a personal level. All those movies. All that money, and this game STILL isn't out.

Sheesh.

Yeah, seriously. Everyone these days wants to comment on how many comic book movies and marvel movies come out, but MCU wasn't even a thing back then. Damn.

I was attempting to humorously reference another poster in a previous thread who was not jokingly making that argument.

I was in the middle of replying to that wall of shit when the thread got closed. Some bull is what that was.

Even more:

-Disney bought Marvel Entertainment and Lucasfilm
-J.J. Abrams directed two Star Trek movies and will direct the new Star Wars (which will probably release before FF XV)
-Faith No More reunited, embarked on a years-long world tour and will release their first album since 1997... before FF XV is released.
-Leonardo Di Caprio still hasn't won an Oscar...
-...and Jon Hamm still hasn't won an Emmy for his work on Mad Men (a series that premiered a year after Versus XIII's announcement)

EDIT:
-Futurama got revived as a series of movies and then a couple of seasons and then definitely ended.
-Michael Bay destroyed everybody's childhood with his "Transformers" series and producing the new TMNT movie.
-The Silent Hill has got five new games released (Origins, Homecoming, Shattered Memories, Downpour, Book of Memories), a shitty HD port... none by Team Silent. And there will be a new game soon, helmed by Hideo Kojima.
-Nintendo still hasn't gone third party, despite everybody saying this since, at least, 2001.

Its 7:20am and just rewatched the trailer.
