Malaysia Airlines flight en route from Amsterdam shot down over Ukraine; no survivors

Has it been confirmed the missile indeed came from Russia or why is everyone blaming Putin already?

Russia created the "rebels" in the Ukraine. They created the "crisis" in the Ukraine. They created the missiles the "rebels" in the "crisis" in the Ukraine used that shot down the jet and killed all those civilians.

It's not hard math to compute, bro.

Why are we reacting to a second-hand tweet (!) and not the statement Putin made, or perhaps something reporting the whole message, not some line taken out of context? I mean Putin is a piece of shit and I wouldn't be surprised if he was that tactless, but drawing conclusions from a tweet like that just seems silly.

Europe should step up on the sanctions together with the Americans. Because if Europe doesn't do it it has no effect on Russia. Taking some more risk, not signing separate deals with Russia like Austria (and even Germany) while posing as an unite and moral entity.
No Russian gas, Europe grinds to a standstill. Some more risk is destroying fragile economies just recovering.

America can sanction every single Russian thing and it not matter, isn't like that here for the foreseeable future.

It's a news agency posting what Putin's statement was.

I know we've been working with the theory that it was an accident but...

...where does it leave this? did this get dismissed as a hoax?

well, it is definitely a picture that was posted on Facebook from Schipol before the flight departed. Don't know if that guy was actually on it though (or if Malaysia Air had any other flights from there this morning)

I wonder how dependent Germany got on Russian gas after Merkel killed the nuke plants.

His actual statement is more along the lines of "The state over whose territory this happened bears responsibility for the terrible tragedy."

Russian gas accounts 30% of the European gas usage, which could be lessened by turning several nuclear installations back on.

Well, somebody was able operate it well enough to hit several planes, including this. Even if they hit the wrong one, they hit it, means the fired the missile and locked to a target. They have to have a basic understanding of that thing.

Aviation specialist on Dutch TV says the fligh recorder (Black Box) is probably useless because if probably stopped functioning directly after the impact.

So it will show everything is fine and then nothing....

No gas, no money for Russia. That's diplomatic battle, who is the first to give up. It could have been done since early this year. There were reports of Russian economy not sustaining a 6 months of full sanctions. It could not even gone to winter. The "fragile" economy that depends mostly on the Russian gas is actually Germany's and it's not that fragile. But it was the stupidest decision ever to not have other sustainable sources of energy besides Russian gas.

There are solution that can be negotiated with Americans to have a back-up for that.

Or what? Wait until Russia pisses directly on an EU country?

30% is huge. If it was that simple it would've been done long ago even before fukishima.

Russian gas has been seen as a problem for at least a decade.

Odd only a heat seeking missile would go for the engine, but the BUK is radar locked

not sure of the veracity of that image (haven't seen it on CNN), but I did see a report earlier on I think FOX saying the BUK has a number of targeting options -- radar, thermal, laser and optical

Putin wants an excuse to go out in a blaze of glory, but I don't think he understands that it would be a unanimous choice at this point.

Yeah I was going to say, probably little in the way of information to get from it.

Unless civilian aircraft have radar lock warnings but I'm assuming they don't.

This whole situation is just incredibly nightmarish. My heart justs bleed for the families of the victims. Innocent lives, just gone. For a conflict they had no part in. Shit life is stupidly unfair sometimes.

Putin's comments look slightly more sane in context

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said: "Undoubtedly, the government in whose air space this happened bears responsibility for this terrible tragedy," according to a Kremlin statement (Russian).

He also said "this tragedy would not have happened if there were peace in this land, or in any case, if [Kiev] had not renewed hostilities in south-eastern Ukraine."

He said that he has given "instructions to the military so that they have all the necessary help in the investigation of this crime", and that he's requested the government's civilian agencies to assist as best in can in the investigation. He added that "no one has the right" to make conclusions without comprehensive, "objective information about the incident".

Putin also reiterated his condolences for victims' families, and observed a moment of silence.

You don't just shoot down an airliner and then brag about it on social media. The world has to respond. Letting it go suddenly makes every passenger plane in the world a free target.

Its pretty disgusting to see people on gaf of all places try to downplay this or try to argue moral high ground. Hope you guys are pleased with yourself.

While it is tragic that innocents were slaughtered, just because its a plane doesn't make it any more significant than those who lose their lives on a daily basis in area's which are warzones (such as Syria) or pseudo war-zones, such as eastern Ukraine. At most "intervention" will come in the form of a few economic sanctions to Russia, but even then they will be mild compared to those which are already in effect.

There is zero chance for a military response. We didn't intervene when Russia was annexing parts of the country, shooting down an airliner with mostly foreign nationals simply doesn't warrant the amount of money it takes to launch a military strike on the rebels. There is also the fact that if there was some kind of intervention we would then be dead center in the Ukrainian conflict, which our country has made sure to not go past the periphery.
