Man of Steel |OT| It's about action.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
The more I think about it the more the
killing and the scene afterwards
makes sense, especially with all the foreshadowing.

Also is there a Spoiler thread?

I Wanna Be The Guy

U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
My problems with Man of Steel:

The
kiss felt forced.

My problems with Superman 1 and 2:

Kidder sucks. At everything. I hate her I hate her I HATE HER! So we've established I hate Kidder. She ruined those movies. Ugh.

Truth Justice and the American Way. Fuck off. And you never lie? YOU LIE ABOUT YOUR IDENTITY EVERY FUCKING DAY! I hate that entire scene, and not just because Kidder is in it. Though it did give me some hope when he dropped Lois.......only for him to catch her again. Sigh.

Too much focus on the romance between Lois and Clark. This sort of ties in to the hating Kidder part, but I feel it's still a different issue.

When these movies try to be funny they often fall flat on their faces. Not to the extent that Superman 3 did, but still. See any scene with Otis. Very cringe worthy sometimes. Lex was also too much of a joke for my tastes, even if he did pose a threat in the first movie.

Superman is willing to give up his powers and let humanity fend for itself just so he can have a girlfriend? Selfish much? Ok he didn't know the Zod threat was coming, but that's not the point. He would have known for a fact that by not being superman anymore people would die. He would not be around to save anyone in danger ever. I have a hard time believing Superman is that selfish, especially considering Lois isn't exactly a catch in that movie.

The S throwing was dumb as hell.

Kissing her to erase her memory? Really?

Did I mention how much I hate Kidder?

Oh and I'm just putting this one in as a counter argument in for anyone that has a problem with the way supes deals with Zod in Man of Steel. Remember the end of Superman 2 when Zod's powers are removed and he's pretty much not a threat anymore? Remember how Superman kills him anyway? Why exactly did he do that? He could have easily just flew Zod back to Metropolis and put him in prison or something. But no, he decides to murder a defenseless Zod. In MOS
he was forced to kill Zod because if he didn't that family would have died and who knows who else he would have killed. Supes had no choice
. In Superman 2 Zod was no such threat anymore. There's no excuse for him murdering Zod the way he did.

Ignore the bolded, these moments are not canon and just bullshit that the sleezeball Richard Lester made up.

LeBron loves his girlfriend. There is no other woman in the world he’d rather have. The problem is, Dwyane’s not a woman.
Your favorite Lois also killed Ursa at the end of Superman 2 lol

You're a real PAIN IN THE NECK!

haha and Supes hugs her close after they both commit murder. People complain about some things about this new take on Superman not being like how they envision him from the Donner films (perfect big blue boy scout) but they forget about this stuff. Hell even if it was Lester that filmed it, it's still in the movie.

And then he becomes a creepy stalker in Returns.

My man Supes is fucked up

Has anyone seen this in Dolby Atmos (or any movie really)?

Is it worth it?

Theres a new theater in town and it seems like every showing of the film is in Atmos and was thinking id go there for a 2nd viewing...

I wanted to, but the screens with Atmos here are all showing it in 3D only. Fuck that. :(

i love zack. this film confirmed the talent that i always felt he had. has shown glimpses of real brilliance throughout his career, guardians was legitimately great - but this was something else, good golly. can't stop thinking about it

some of the imagery..wowowowo

the perfect antidote to the sterilised marvel films

Yeah, the imagery is great. But that doesn't make him a good director. In fact, I'd say that Man of Steel pretty much solidifies the fact that the dude is a pretty awful director outside of action scenes.

I saw this yesterday. I thought it was mostly good, aside from some sloppy writing. Maybe another draft and this could have been a lot closer to technically perfect.

Spoilers

Stuff I didn't like:

Pa Kent's death was pointless. It makes little sense to have him die in a way that Clark could have prevented. A heart attack or some medical illness works better because even if Clark were a doctor there'd eventually come a point where he couldn't do anything to save him - that's how it's supposed to hurt him. They tried way too hard to drive home his fears about the world being afraid of Clark and his unnecessary death was symptomatic of that.

The reasoning for his birth parents (and the rest of his species) not coming with him to earth (or some other planet) was too flimsy for me. If you're going to make hubris a plot point, write it better somehow - Kryptonians are a space faring race (who know how to grow themselves artificially, no less) and they should act like it by not letting themselves go extinct. The world around them is collapsing, and that they stop to hold a trial for a dude who's actually making a valid point - even if he is a giant dick about it - is a head scratcher.

I wish it weren't so serious all the time. A few more moments of levity would have been nice, like the scene with the truck tied up in the powerlines.

There's some stuff about pacing/editing I could nitpick, but I'm not gonna.

Stuff I liked:

I liked the overall vibe. It didn't really feel like a superhero film, but more like a straight up alien invasion/disaster flick. I thought that was cool.

I don't have a problem with the kiss. I've seen far less attractive people who have never met before sloppily make out in crowded bars after a few drinks. It doesn't take much to make people wanna fuck each other, but this dude saved her life like eight times and she knows his life story. The pussy is his, the dick is hers.

It's nice to have a Superman willing to kill (as justly as he could anyway). He could have dragged Zod away and continued to beat him down, but he would have eventually had to kill him anyway.

The action was phenomenal. A truly impressive level of destruction, and an awesome display of speed and power by all the aliens.

Good casting, good acting, good direction.

P.S. I liked Superman Returns and still do. I like this one, too.

Best comic book movie since TDK. I fucking loved it. Faora, my god I'd let her throw me about. The action was stunning, never seen anything like it on the big screen.

I didn't really notice the product placement.

I really had to looks for that one easter egg, blink and you'll miss it.

Man of Steel dropped 64% on first monday for 13 million

https://twitter.com/giteshpandya/status/346966385626333184

#ManOfSteel held up very well MON w/ near $13M. 1st full week may reach $170M, possible $220M+ after 2nd wknd.

This means an excellent word of mouth as it was expected to drop 70-75% on first monday it audience reviews matched critics reviews. Even more amazing is the drop is low considering the saturday to sunday numbers were flat

I refuse to believe this is true for anyone. It was more in your face than a Bond movie. IHOP, Sears, IHOP, Windows, IHOP, Nokia, Coke, did I mention IHOP?

Also, IHOP.

Other than the fact that it wasn't a generic diner, it didn't even register as product placement to me. I guess I am not cynical enough to be distracted by every brand in a movie.

And really, Bond (Casino Royale in particular) is the worst for this. Sony, Sony, Sony!

What kind of snob-ass place did you watch it that the audience laughed at awkward scene transitions? Did they play it at your film school or something?
LoL, no. I saw it at an 11pm showing at a theater outside DC where I live. Apparently we were just a jaded group.

I feel like I offended a lot of people with my opinion but I really did enjoy the movie. I just felt that it could have been better with a bit more subtlety in the direction, that's all.

Other than the Nokia phones, I was starting to wonder if I was watching a different international cut of the movie during my 2nd viewing after reading all the complaints about product placement. You guys are just wayyy too sensitive about that stuff.

I've already said this but Ihop and Sears don't exist where I live. I'm sure if I watch it again I'll look at all this shit now that you've all pointed it out. :p

Sears was the only one I really noticed since it's so huge in that one shot that lingers there. IHOP didn't bother me at all since it flashes by so fast and makes total sense to have in Smallville. I honestly didn't notice anything else.

It is Kansas. I'm surprised there wasn't more IHOP.

We should also all be happy that we saw something I'm sure we'll never see again in film, tv or print. Super-powered entities fighting in a god damn IHOP.

Yea I keep screaming at the top of my lungs inside every time I see this, esp for those of us who haven't seen it. Posting the link to the spoiler thread doesn't even make a difference :| but god please learn how to use the black bars at least. This movie has been out what only 4/5 days now and having to be careful in a non spoiler thread is annoying as hell.

Donner had footage of the three being arrested by the police after Supes took away their powers. ABC put it back in for their TV showing in the 80s, it's on the Donner Cut DVD, but only as a deleted scene. It is kind of funny that Lester, who was brought in to up the slap stick, left it implied that Supes tossed Zod to his death.

My biggest beef with part II was that Lester left it completely unexplained how Clark got his powers back. He just looks at the crystal and then, hey, Supes is back. Loved how it was done with Brando in Donner's cut.

we need some bannings if they don't listen. People are still openly posting about character deaths.

I'm looking back at the thread and people were actually using GAF as part of their proof that MOS has mixed WOM? I'm not saying it doesn't, but you NEVER use GAF as any basis for ANYTHING.

You'd think TDK had mixed WOM if you went by GAF discussions.

Just saw it, don't get the negative reviews. I loved it and it seemed like everyone else enjoyed it too. Henry cavill alone made it worth it.

Don't forget the unexplained cellophane "S" toss, or the point-my-finger-and-lift-people trick near the beginning of the film.

The movie was pretty great, and out of the problems with it, the biggest ones are by far inalienable parts of the Superman myths. There is no way to logically explain why no Kryptonians escaped Krypton. Superman can't really be hurt, and the only thing that can match up to him are enemies of similar physical constitution (unless you want to use kryptonite, which is overused and more often than not just a cheesy plot facilitator). And so on and so forth.
