Man of Steel |OT| It's about action.

My friend just text me, he said it was one of the best Super hero movies he has ever seen.

To me that means a lot, because he is an authority on comics etc...................

This is where I stand as well. I'll need to see it again, but it might stand in the upper echelon of comic-book adapted films.

If it weren't for the overkill in the third act, I could easily throw it at the top above The Dark Knight.

No, I'm not trolling. Promise.

EDIT: To elaborate on that more, I don't really have a "top superhero film". I should say, it's almost deserving of being placed among films like Spider-man 2, X-Men 2, The Dark Knight, etc.

I'm seeing this tomorrow night. I hate the superman character so lets see what will happen. Don't think too highly of the donner films and Superbore returns was god awful.

I will be completely unbiased. Haven't championed this film and I do believe Snyder is capable of making a good comic book film (Watchmen) and absolute shit (sucker punch).

So, basically, yours is the opinion I look forward to the most, that's for damn sure. Have a good time.

Fucking hell, I am SO, SOOO sorry man!

I am SUPER bummed out that I spoiled that for someone. I was frantic, trying to fix that. I thought I had spoiler wrapped it, as I'm not used to the tools on this thread.

That was completely unintentional and I feel like a dick. I had someone spoil some Game of Thrones shit for me, and that really pissed me off.

It's not cool, even if accidental.
I am not mad, it was an honest mistake you were trying to spoiler tag it. To be honest I had guessed that from some of the clues in this thread plus reviews so it wasn't a huge shock and it doesn't "spoil" the movie for me.

Along with myself, on GAF I only trust the following person for his completely rational, uncomprimising review:

Jett.

Mr negativity will tell it like it is.

Solo became an instant joke character when he said he prefered TDKR over TDK, lol.

I appreciate that you're not upset; your mercy is appreciated.

Still, I firmly believe in not spoiling movies (or anything) on a matter of principle. It's like banging your best friend's wife, you just don't fucking do it.

Which theater did you go to? I used to live across the street from the 101.

I'm thinking about moving back. ;)

does she actually know the character? she read a comic in the last 30 years? if she can't answer that then she's just a Reeve head and doesn't really know how the character has changed post Reeve Superman.

You literally have no idea who I'm talking about, why she came to her opinion, what her background is, or why she believes what she believes, and yet she's a "reeve head."

Dude.

C'mon.

I'm not saying you can't disagree with her ONCE YOU READ IT, and in fact, I'm sure you will (I probably will, as well) but what you're doing is pretty intellectually dishonest.

Par for the course for him. I keep thinking about replying back but why bother? His mind is made up, he wants to love this movie so he will.

I mean, take the cat in tree thing...no way they aren't talking about maybe the IDEA of Superman, or what they feel Superman represents to them. That he's the kind of guy who takes his time to do the little nice things...

Buy no, they all specifically want him to save cats. THEY'RE ALL REEVEHEADS, DISREGARD THEIR OPINION.

Whatever.

Got my tix for friday, looking forward to it. Haven't been to the theaters since Avengers.

lol I love the meltdown here. It's only an "honest" review when it's a positive one.
Why would an honest reviewer "love the meltdown"? Not saying you're biased (I'm not reading your review), but why would a reviewer enjoy the assumed suffering of others except if that colors their review?

Obviously some reviewers are taking a dump on the film for issues that go beyond itself, Rex Reed writes:

"Despite an obscene budget that could have made a giant stride in the cure for cancer. . . and the whole endeavor appears to be the work of grown men who never outgrew puberty."

It's absurd that cancer cure is the standard of quality for a blockbuster and there's no reason to write the second part except to knock comic book films. He didn't review any others (not Avengers, not Iron Man) besides Dark Knight Rises (1/4) and Man of Steel (2/4)... basically expressing his dissatisfaction with the trend.

If the knife-twist is part of the pleasure of writing the review, it's reasonable to question the legitimacy of the review. Like asking a partisan party member to give you an honest evaluation the speech of another party when there's much more going on in the background than just the evaluation itself.

Wow Rex Reed really wrote that smh what a douche. That's so pathetic and that has no place in any review.

Rex Reed is pretty terrible as a reviewer. He always said things like that, but it's his thing. It has a place in his reviews. I see no reason to get miffed over it.

"finally an honest review. what didn't you like about though?" made me laugh, I admit

sorry i'm not allowed to probe. actually i'm not.

Jett is cynical and gets off on that.

I tried to warn you guys to lower your expectations and it was going to be as polarizing as ASM.
You guys still boarded the hype train. :/

train we on make no stops!

all you've been doing is looking for reviews to validate your opinion i'm trying to question why the hell are critics (more than one by the way that brought that example you mentioned) still mentioning Donner Superman. it's lazy writing.

if her frame of reference is Donner Superman then she doesn't know the character as well as she think she does. it's two simple questions, not hard to answer. I just think everyone should make up their own minds by seeing it themselves.

and this is my beef right here. this reviewer let personal biases get in the way of making an honest review.

Access Hollywood review says...skip it!

If Nolan's presence invites comparisons between "Man of Steel" and "The Dark Knight," then the character invites comparisons to the one that started it all: 1978's "Superman: The Movie," directed by Richard Donner. Here was a film that had it all, which is why it still stands as the gold standard for movies based on comic book characters. It was fun, exciting and magical. It had heart, humor and romance.

Again, people expect Superman to be apple pie and charming. Get over yourselves.

No you don't, because she saw it, she made up her own mind, and she's going to write an article explaining why she came to the conclusion she made, and not only have you

a) not seen the movie
b) not read her article

You've already dismissed her and her opinion based on something you literally DO NOT KNOW.

You are expelling opinions directly from your colon right now.

God. Feels like I'm hearing more about Donner now then with Returns in 06 lol

Also the humor still sucks in 78 Superman and that's my favorite superhero movie. Otis makes me cringe.

I know a writer at Wired who told me yesterday her article on it (should be coming soon) is going to be REALLY negative, and that I dodged a bullet missing the press screening.

The gist was that she thought the movie entirely misses the point of the character, and in fact, damages Superman.

quoting you again because I asked if she has read the character in comic or any other media other than the Superman movies in the last thirty years.

oh now we're getting juicy, imagine when we actually see it. 33 more hours...
why is my question so hard to answer? to expect Donner Superman when this has been advertised as anything but it makes me question where that reviewer is coming from.

so is there any light heartedness in this at all at least? or is clark kent just moping around the whole time

I recall Simo saying there was. I haven't seen him post much though lately so I could be mistaken.

I dreamed of a Superman where he was moping around, not sure what to do with himself. Having trouble deciding if he should do good or bad.

Just a constant struggle. A very dark dark Superman movie.

After Avengers and Iron Man 3 I will never trust another RT score.

I stopped trusting it after Returns. I'm glad that so far today most people have stopped posting the score.

I'd assume there's a bit of humor, I've seen clips of Lois cracking jokes ("What can I say? I get writer's block if I'm not wearing a flak jacket."), some light moments with Clark ("You might wanna step back a little...maybe a little more."), and lest we forget "I just think he's kinda hot." I think some reviewers wanted more of a Donner feel to the movie, hence some of the more positive reviews/recollections I'm seeing about Superman Returns.

can't wait to watch this and form my own opinion soon. i really don't like snyder as a director although i think the marketing has been really cool so far.

I've heard this movie is completely humorless. Like that people appreciate the humor in Nolan's Batman films even more due to how void it is in this film.

holy shit. that's like a vacuum of humor then. i'm not asking for iron man 3 or spiderman 2 levels of comedy here but at least some sense of humor would be nice. maybe that's why so many people are crying out for the donner original and returns.

that's it. i'm done with this thread until i watch the movie.

I haven't seen this film so I'm not going to review a review, but I do find it strange that so many of these critics insist on comparing this film to Richard Donner's Superman.

Superman and Superman II are fantastic films. The sequel in particular strikes this perfect balance of humor, humanity, and hopelessness with a charm that could only be matched by Spider-Man 2. I'll always love those first two Superman films, but I would never use them as a yardstick by which to measure a Superman film made for this generation.

If a Superman film is a reflection of our society as I feel it is, then I think it's important to note that while our ideals might be the same as always, the issues that modern society faces today are significantly different and need to be addressed with a different approach.

It sounds to me a lot like Star Trek: Into Darkness, where if you are a big fan of the source material then you won't like it as much (because major elements or themes are changed), but if you just go in expecting a summer movie, then you'll enjoy it quite a bit.

If tracking numbers hold out there is no way this will hit 300 mil domestically. Tracking has been falling. I doubt its due to reviews though.

These two things don't really line up. And people got on the Nolan movies for being humorless too, so I wouldn't say this just yet.

Unless things drastically changed in less than a week, I remember tracking increasing. It depends on the site, of course.

Seems the exact opposite is happening. Those that love the source material are creaming their pants all over the internets, while those familiar with just the Donner movies hate it.
