It's still ongoing as well, isn't it?

Oh, I don't really know. There are only 2 volumes out right now. I'd be a little surprised if there's more but there's no particular reason there can't be.

Would Sensui and Itsuki in Yu Yu Hakusho count?
It seems that if there's any gay characters in such a mainstream publication, they're either a gag character, an extremely minor one, or a villain.

It should be reminded that in spite of the abundance of manga that might suggest otherwise, Japan is still an extremely conservative country that still hasn't recognized gay marriage and in which public opinion is still somewhat reluctant to accept it.

Sure, I forgot about them but I do remember something to that effect.

And of course, American media also had an abundance of same-sex couples in its media but it only managed to pass any legislation regarding it this year. Legislation always falls behind public opinion, but public opinion tends to be shaped when previously untouched subjects enter the mainstream. It's guess it's a little bit logically circular.

A little bit off the subject but I've always thought this:

"As a consequence, Japanese gay couple, in the absence of same sex marriage or civil partnership laws, often use adoption procedures to register themselves as belonging to the same household (where the older partner legally adopts the younger partner, which in absence of a spouse makes the only adopted child the sole executor of that household)."

was a pretty amazing loophole. It's kind of ridiculous to think you need to get adopted to get married, but it's great that there at least exists some means to gaining the rights you ought to have.

Anyway.

Pumpkin and Mayonnaise

EZmS8cw.png

A woman works to support herself and her musician boyfriend. When I first started this, I thought the plot somewhat reminiscent of Solanin, but apparently I couldn't have been more wrong. Miho, the protagonist, basically convinces herself that she's living to support her boyfriend's dreams, but as she takes on more risky work, she takes it out on him. He only decides to get a job after he finds out she's doing sex work. Miho reunites with a previous fling and gets together with him on occasion, wishing her boyfriend would break up with her so she can be with this one, but when her boyfriend does so she realizes that her fling is exactly what it is - a fling she's been paying for.

One of the main things I appreciated most was the lack of judgment from the story to the characters. Miho cheats on her boyfriend but isn't caught, her boyfriend doesn't work but he's not a deadbeat, yet there's a sense of sadness and yet satisfaction with the way their situation ends up. Although her boyfriend's songs are later played by his previous bandmates, his dream only ends up being a dream after he decides to get a job. Meanwhile, Miho is able to go back to her normal work, and the two are able to live together. To me, the last couple chapters were there to illustrate that the two have nowhere else to go, but at least now it's a place they want to be.

How mainstream were the media depicting same-sex couples positively in the US though? I feel it's still relegated to relatively niché series in Japan, though the situation is improving as well.

When people want to be together at any cost, they'll always find a way to do so I guess. Nice for them, but I still find it sad that they have to go to such lengths for that.

Anyway.

Wow, happy for Koi wa Ameagari. Debut work if I'm not wrong.

Feels like an underdog supporter when Hinamatsuri, Rin, Alice in Borderland and Kindaichi sell noticeably lower than their counterparts. At least they still make the chart.

It's been one year.
The boy x girl x tanooki triangle continues.
The protagonist continues to be an asshole.

Tokiwa Kitareri!!

Someone gave the Kenichi mangaka another manga?!?!? Who would do such a thing?!

And the real question is, how much do I hate myself...

*follows*

Answers that question.

Mahou Shoujo of the End 31

Ha ha ha ha. Wat.

Everything up to here was Chapter 1?!

I do enjoy that the big inconsistency of last chapter was actually what Rape Cop and MC caught in this chapter that led to the villain reveal. That was actually pretty nice considering last chapter I was like "How the fuck did that dude know?" and they made it the main plot twist this chapter.

Well...guess I'll read Chapter 2.

Mayonaka no X Giten 12-14

Huh. Two well thought out reveals these chapters. This manga is weird sometimes where they'll reveal the secret to a mystery and you'll think it's an asspull but then they'll show shit from past chapters that I never noticed that they did which is how they solved it. Pretty well done in that regard.

That being said, holy shit Class Rep is really bad at being secretive. How the fuck did MC not notice her before?

*walks out of class into hallway, answers phone* "Murderer here, how can I murder you today, murder~"

To Love-Ru Darkness 59-.5

Wtf at those poll results. How the hell did that girl land the #2 spot?

Is plot finally happening? Can't tell anymore, Nemesis will probably Darkness version every girl, that would be 1-up

seeing those Kuroko no Basket numbers, I wonder why did the author just end the series like that. I guess he could always come back with it if he wanted to

May not be handling it the best way, but he's just getting this all kind of forced on him. I don't blame him. :p

Why's Tokyo Ghoul so popular? Likewise with Fairy Tail anything interesting happen in its latest chapters?

Pretty sure Fairy Tail is in it's last arc now. Or close to the last arc at least.

New manga from the Soul Eater author. Looks pretty good

Wow that poll sucks. 4 and 5 should be 1 and 2. And damn the kings gonna fight? Hopefully nemesis doesn't die

Worst poll results ever, but we had the best setup/action chapter ever in TLRD. This is pretty awesome lol

Fire Brigade of Flames 00

People catch on fire, now up to the fire brigade to take care of this.

This has promise. Not a completely original idea but I'm liking where's its going. The characters are tolerable, it has good pacing and the powers structure sounds pretty interesting.

It has my attention.

Uhhhhh...are there other firefighting manga about combusting people I'm unaware of?

Jitsu wa Watashi wa 93

Everybody is idiots.

ib - 14

Jesus Christ, I know you only get ib powers if you're a fuck-up but way to use the person you're in love with. Fuck's sake this manga is really depressing, everybody in this is an asshole even the likable people. Bad guys (use that term loosely, considering they're trying to save the world) fucked up cause Kuro just got a major reason to destroy the world and a huge malice upgrade.

Miracle Hero-nim 4

Ah, so only he can see the tiny poop demon lord.

well not the catching on fire part, but the whole people getting infected by something (plants, machines, etc) and up to a group of other people to fight it

I'll give that people catching on fire is new ~_~

Welp, I was intrigued by the spontaneous combustion.

Nothing very unique plotwise, but the setting is pretty interesting.

And wow, this art is so much better than the beginning of Soul Eater. Talk about developing a style.

Garbage poll results. Sairenji at number one is truly disgusting and how did Risa even get in the top 5? The chapter itself was really good though. I hope next chapter is actually a battle and doesn't cop out somehow. Small Train mention was nice, hope that means he's going to be in it again soon. I want Creed to somehow be the mastermind behind the Nemesis program. I guess Torneo or Doctor would work better as pervert villians but Creed is sexier.
