well, that was downright incredible. It was so heavy though, so depressing to read. I feel like if I wasn't in a good place emotionally I would never be able to read it. Very much deserving of its tragedy tag.

great story, particularly if you like mystery and intrigue and don't mind it being a downer.

the sequel manga was dropped, so I'll have to continue with the LNs, but reading the synopsis of what the second one is I might need to take a few days' break before I decide to tackle it.

Definitely recommended though.

Reading these early volumes makes me angry at the current product. Lots of Tsugumi, a feeling of plot progression, and a manageable number of harem members. It's a good reminder of why I enjoyed reading it back then, and why I hate-read it now.

Hahaha, I try I try. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though. "Worry" is a stronger word than I'm thinking of but I was "worried" that you'd find it to be too much. It is, after all, very heavy and oppressive in tone. There's tragedies rooted within tragedies. Even the resolution carries that same weight to it. There's something about it, to me, that is just hauntingly beautiful to it rather than purely tragedy for the sake of tragedy.

It may not be happy. It may not be fluffy. It may not be adorable. But it has those elements where it needs them and delivers a well-crafted tragedy in the end. With Ningen Shikkaku / No Longer Human as the basis of the plot, it's hard for the book to not have some kind of sense of depression. The afterword uses "Warmly despondent" and I feel like that's most appropriate a description for the story. It's not a bottomless pit of despair. It manages to keep itself afloat and uses Dazai's works very well in a tale ultimately about human emotions and alienation.

This also served as a good way for me to relive the first read and to give me reason to re-read it (again).
