Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

I made a thread a while ago about how a Nintendo All Stars kart game would be awesome...turns out most of the people who replied said hell no.

This is driving me nuts. No pun intended. Watching TheBitBlock and GameXplain's video reviews ... the former just vaguely says "full HD" ... reviews I've skimmed through either avoid or skirt the whole 720p bit.
 
So honestly I am beyond excited for this game, but every track with real laps staying the same seems oldy-moldy after Transformed with it's crazy tracks that change each lap.

Still can't wait, but SASART haters need to screw off.
 
Mario kart isn't really beholden to the Mario Universe. 99% of things are just "OH THIS IS WARIO....OIL FIELD? YEAH SURE OIL FIELD."

If they wanted to make a level that's like Link's Castle or something, I don't think they explicitly need to incorporate Zelda in to the series.

and shit, wii u's future prospects aren't rosy but it blows my mind that every other review mentions how few games there are on this system when the competition's current lineup ain't fuckin shit and i don't ever hear about that

this has been the least exciting generational transition i've experienced in my life.
 
Game looks freaking amazing. I'm more stoked for this game than any other title this year. And yes, I did buy a Wii U to play this game. Over a year ago.

Ultimately, Mario Kart 8 is everything we hoped it would be. Every race is an incredible orchestra of violent combat at high speeds with cartoon characters in silly vehicles. It’s impossible for anyone to look at that with anything but a smile on their face, but it’s also a charming piece of nostalgia with a fresh coat of paint and a handful of new challenges. This game belongs in every Wii U owner’s collection, and is more than enough justification to buy the console if you haven’t already.

Wait, can you seriously not invite friends into a regular lobby? So basically if I want to play with some of my friends we're stuck racing by ourselves and can't have random strangers fill in the rest of the spots?

Edit: Actually, as pointed out by OricWindstar, score is 5/5 stars.

Outside of this, every aspect of Mario Kart 8 is polished to the finest shine: the look of joy as your character faces the camera for a split-second after a boost jump, the way the canvas of the gliders ripples in the breeze, or how the Sweet Sweet Canyon's spectators are gingerbread versions of Mario characters. No detail is too incidental.

Regardless of the Wii U's troubles Nintendo remains one of (if not the) greatest developers on the planet in terms of making games that are a pure joy to play, and Mario Kart 8 is one of its finest. The question with Mario Kart 8 was never really "is this going to be good", because with Nintendo that much can be taken for granted. The question is whether it's the best yet. And, among one hell of a field, it takes first place.

Level (swedish premiere gaming mag) will give it a 10/10. They just confirmed it on twitter. They call it "game of the year" on their next cover.

Latte certainly seems to be throwing around A LOT of polys for a GPU that's only supposedly drawing 20-odd Watts and pushing 176GFlops, don't you think..?

The game doesn't take advantage of some unknown secret sauce. Its just good old fashioned efficient programming on efficient hardware. We always known the Wii U has a modern gpu and very efficient architecture compared to last gen. Flops isn't everything.

The only thing that is possible is that they decreased the OS ram footprint and its using more than 1gb.

No? They can join you via the friend list if MK7 is anything to go by.

Honestly, looking at the lackluster character roster for 8 I think there's a lot of untapped potential left in the Mario series. Nintendo Kart would result in only the big names getting a place in the roster. And Link and Samus racing Karts wouldn't work, I don't think. And I haven't looked at all the tracks, but the ones I've seen in trailers have been some of the most creative I've seen in any game in the series (the airport looks amazing so it's not like the Mario universe is limiting creativity (there are pretty much no rules to what can go in it after all).

Also, "Mario Kart" is such a well known series, it would be a mistake, I think, to drop it. It would also detract from what makes Smash Bros. so special.

This myth seems to be spreading like wildfire and seems to come from the thread of angry people in the "voice chat is friends only" thread.

If you head into a regular worldwide lobby, with random strangers, friends will see you in their list of games they can join. They can just hit A and be in that same lobby. Racing with friends, with random strangers filling the rest of the spots.

You can race with friends, and set up lobbies, but you can't invite them to your lobby. What that means is they have to stumble into your lobby by themselves, and you'll need to message your friend in some other way probably for them to realize you have a lobby waiting.

The tournaments seem like the best way to get people playing reliably if you have a decent group of friends, since you can set them to start at certain times on certain days. Agree a time with friends in advance and you'll know where to go. The lack of invites is a pain, but I feel like Mario Kart shouldn't take the blame for that as much as the Wii U OS as a whole.
