Mario Kart Wii: 16 players online

Yes, I don't think he said anything about how many players the online mode would support.

Yes, online battle mode was confirmed prior. In what form exactly, I do not recall.

I agree with you. Nintendo needs to add more battle maps. I mean we alreday know that we will see at least 4 cups whithin 4 races for each cup.

but 6 maps for battle mode is so boring...

Sure, but 60 tracks and 25 maps is a little too much to ask. I think you can expect 25 + tracks though.

I'd never play it with the classic controller. There's no reason why the controls should be worse than the fantastic ones in Excite Truck.

If lair and Smash has taught us anything, its that giving us the option is important.

Just in physics?

Well, I haven't played much DD ('cause I hate the two player gimmick stuff), so I'm not sure what else to change.

I don't want snaking, and I don't want multi-character carts (which is obviously not in).

What else from MKDS was good?

Edit: I don't know how to articulate my thoughts well today -- I haven't slept in over a day. Let me just say that MKDS is the best MK I've played by far.

I don't want one option to be superior and feel I have to use it to compete online. If Mario Kart was announced as Wiimote only I'd be happy as can be.

MISSIONS. And the star rating system.

*** on everything bar about 3 GPs on mirror. I barely put Mario Kart DS down for about a month.

MKDS was the game that brought me out of lapsed gaming purgatory. I still remember picking up my brother's DS and playing a local wifi match where I had my own screen to work with. Amazing.

This was last February (2006), and the next day I preordered a DS Lite from Lik Sang (RIP). When it finally arrived in like... April, I already had Ouendan, Jump Superstars, Mario Kart, and MP:H (which was awful, imho) ready to play.

Got excited for Wii, since the input method was off the wall like DS, bought on launch day. 2 months later, sprung the cash for a 360.

Can't stop gaming again. Feels so refreshing to return to my roots.

I'm more worried about having fun than competing online. Excite Truck was great, but I havae no interest playing Mario Kart with motion controls.

If they can't give me an option then they sure as hell better make sure Super Mario Kart VC is online.

But,...DIDNT YOU SEE THE WHEEL???

Seriously though, if Nintendo designed the controls around the wheel, then it could end up being the best option. Who knows. I wonder when the first play tests will be.

The Mario Kart tracks we've seen for Wii seem to have a lot of hills and dips in them, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a Excite Truck style tilting forward/backwards mechanic to land properly and get a speed boost. I just worry that if they don't focus on one scheme all of them will suffer (with the exception of Smash Bros which is clearly doing nothing new control-wise).

but still no voice chat? might as well race against the computer if you can't talk to your friends without hopping on AIM or calling them.

Dito.
Without headset-support i dont see myself playing this game very often. Even moreso as it looks like Double Dash Reloaded.
Damn, i hoped for a MK Wii with a lot more racing-centric focus. :-(

This is the only definate Wii purchase for me. And if it's 16 player online, it's going to be amazing.

It's time for matt's editoral, oh and mario kart is a baby game/non game, it's not hardcore enough for gamers.

Holy shit, this is great news.

As for controls, I'm not sure what I'd prefer just yet. Classic controller would be great though, especially with d-pad control. Tilt control might be okay, but options are preferable.

It would also be pretty cool if you could play with the DS as a controller, especially if it would put the radar on your DS screen.

For a Kart racer i really wouldn't mind sideways Wiimote.

However for more realistic racers i would want the CC.

At least make it an option though, it shouldn't be hard.

I thought the point of the wii was revolutionary controls....

doesn't classic control schemes negate that?

16 player Mario Kart would be pretty awesome.

I seem to remember them saying there would be more than one control scheme, but I could be wrong.

That's about as logical as saying 360 having an SD output option negates the HD-focus of the console.

Mii implementation would be great. Some kind of emblem editor too (like in the DS version)

That would make me a happy GDGF.

they also stated that they aren't abandoning classic control schemes as they come up with it anyhow. Look at smash.

Surprised that anti-cheating hasn't been mentioned yet. Didn't it pretty much ruin the DS version of Mario Kart?

There's an Action Replay due for Wii early next year.

But Mario Kart would clearly benefit from the motion controls. Excite Truck handled pretty well, but thinking about it, was that because the courses were quite large? *shrugs*

About the whole Snaking thing - does Snaking discourage using items? If it does, then I hope it doesn't return. Sounds like one of those "being the best is more important than having fun" situations.

I disagree. Motion controls do not allow the same level of precision as traditional controls. Since I love Mario Kart more for the driving aspect than the battle (why I prefer SMK over all the rest), having motion controls exclusively would be disasterous.

That probably means the first 16 people to buy the game are allowed to play online.
If we're really lucky, it means 16 people competing online simultaneously around the globe.

Agreed. Barring a miracle, I don't think I'd buy a MK with only motion controls. I suppose if the game followed a looser control method like the first two games I could cope, but DD and MKDS both have very, very precise controls. I don't think I can go back.

I found Excite Truck very responsive. If that game could have a classic controller plugged in I wouldn't bother. I don't see why Nintendo would fuck up Mario Kart's control scheme unless they got it working properly. NSMB used D-Pad, Phantom Hourglass used nothing but touch. If MK is exclusively motion sensing, I expect it to be because they got it working well.
