Is it just me or is the Assault rifle and the sniper the most over powered weapons in the game? Playing on hardcore and those 2 guns work in EVERY situation when playing as soldier, its amazing.

Great game though, but I kind of get the feeling they took 2 steps forward and 1 step back with it, few things that just make me go "What the shit".

What's considered more useful? Heavy shockwave or Improved shockwave? Generally I would imagine that the AOE variants are less useful than the "Heavy" variants of skill ranks since often times enemies aren't crowded together, but I think that shockwave and pull might be more useful with more AOE to them. Does anyone have experience with either of these?

Personally I was a fan of the wider attack radius. I use Shockwave for cloud clearing not direct damage and it's how it should be used imo.

Not sure if someone has mentioned this but to my fellow Vanguard players. The Advanced Training ability Fortification that increases your armour stacks with your Charge abilities shield and the charge doesn't disable it. Meaning you are basically the ~Juggernaut while both are stacked :D

Be aware though the charge will disable the armour animation from Fortification.

Yeah this was pretty awesome. Takes some getting used to setting up the combination especially when the visual indicator is gone but it can be awesome if used correctly but for the most part I felt I was struggling too hard to make it worth its weight in points.

I've been considering a build that nearly maxes out on Cryo. I didn't think I'd be using automatic weapons as a Vanguard very much but the assault rifle was definitely my main choice of weapon during my playthrough once I got it. I'd imagine using full auto cryo with the AR would allow the ability to freeze multiple enemies, which would make the charge THAT much more significant since it'd be an auto kill on use of a frozen enemy. Imagine having the AOE charge instead of the heavy one and breaking up a group of frozen opponents...fucking awesome.

With that ability would using fortification even be necessary? I guess it could save my ass more often than not on insanity but the ability to have an ice freezing, bull charging Vanguard who can slam and shockwave enemies instantly after coming out of my charge is almost too much to pass up....

I'd love to try the build out immediately actually but I don't think I have anything available on my new game + that actually has combat...what the fuck.

The top 3 rows of screenshots, show all 3 helmet/visor options available through the Dr Pepper promotion. Splinter Cell hood, Geordi Visor, Goggles.

What the fuck is this shit? This was kind of fucked up. For a game that is already fairly limited in terms of customization its annoying to see 4 or 5 additional helmets, weapons and armor pieces available as a preorder bonus. I suppose the promotions worked given the sales figures but FUCK.

I know, right? I'm hoping these goggles are unlockable in game where we don't get the codes. I'm not importing a crate of Dr Pepper just for it.

I was super pissed about Zaeed's lack of conversation tree on the Normandy, and I guess I still am because it seems so half-assed compared to what we got with Shale in DA:O. But I just did his loyalty quest and holy shit that was almost enough to completely redeem him, so awesome. This is the first loyalty quest I've done and if the others are even 1/4 as good I will be in heaven.

I've only been lightly skimming this thread to try and avoid spoilers. I've seen complaints about the simplification of the inventory and what not, and I can totally understand where they are coming from, but I am just having pure gaming bliss right now. The only blemish that has stood out for me so far was when I was talking to Anderson on the Citadel and during a point in the conversation his head went bonkers swinging wildly left to right. Also had an odd little glitch in a similar vein while talking to Chakwas, hopefully nothing like this pops up again.

edit: And I agree on the Dr Pepper stuff, pretty shitty for all the people who can't get a hold of it.

I just installed mass effect 2 on my windows 7 pc, but there's no sound at all. Not in the intro screens, not in game.

Am I the only one with this problem? :(

Can anyone tell me when I will be getting a new submachine gun? I'm past the
collector's ship
and I am still rocking the one I got in the beginning. I want something new dammit.

I also had the most intense battle on
the collector's ship. My team (Miranda and Thane were dead and I was out of medigel's. So it was just me and one of those flying collector thingies. Y'know the one you fight on the colony too.

The difficulty was on hardcore and my sentinel was putting up shields constantly. Taking potshots with the heavy pistol to take out the barrier. So I let that thing come close enough till I got hit and my shields went down. Quickly put up another tech armor and run for cover. But before I got to the next cover my shield was down again.:lol So I had to recharge, put up shield and take potshots at the barrier again. When the barrier was down I took out my Incisor Rifle to take down its armor. That single boss took me about 20 minutes or so to kill. Good stuff.:lol

I think you missed one. I'm fairly certain you get the second during Mordin's recruitment quest.

I do know that I had both by the point you're at.

You get one when you recruit
Tali
.

Also, for that battle, I had to break the AI - that entailed hiding behind a column and just circling around it while the bad guy tried to chase me. Since it was focused on me, my party just shot it to death. Cheap, but I couldn't figure out a legit way to beat it.

Fuck. I was afraid of that. No way to go back right? Will I be getting another one down the line? And where?

Edit: Thanks for the answer.

Also I won't trigger the endgame if I pick up
Tali
as the last party member of the second set right? Still have loads of loyalty missions to do.

I used that pillar as hiding place a lot. And then I ran up the stairs again to hide behind the pillars there. And back again. I lost count how many times. :lol

For non-soldiers, there are only 2 SMGs in the game, as far as I know. It's possible that a soldier may get a third
on the collector ship at the point that the other classes get their new weapon skill, but I don't know.

Since I'm on a huge Mass Effect binge at the moment, I think I might order those books even though I've never bothered to read a videogame book before. Has anyone bought the "Art of Mass Effect" ? It's like $16.50 on Amazon, I might go for it. What about the Redemption comic? I wouldn't normally spend my money on this kind of stuff but I want all the Mass Effect shit I can find.

Just wait till you pick a
Widow
. When I was there with my Sentinel I just got the message to pick generic sniper/AR/shotgun, but when I went with my Soldier the choices were different. To put into perspective - one shot from this in the head = 1/2 Armor down from
Scion
on Hardcore.

As for a save game I don't see how else it could be - start another playthrough, ME1 choices are fixed, ME2 choices get erased and you can do it differently for ME3.

How do you activate new outfits? :lol

Yeah, I'm laughing, but only at my stupidity. But for real, I can't figure out how to do it.
Player outfits: Captain's quarters.
Team outfits: Use any terminal on the Normandy and select the first Squad Info option. There, you can cycle appearance when you select a member.

There's only 1 alternate costume per character right?

That's a male.

I'm more inclined to believe that actually might be a female. A lot of Krogan there do say that the female and children are heavily segregated from the males with the occasional envoy from said group. That, and the voice is noticeably different from virtually every other Krogan seen in both games. And it would make little sense for an envoy of a female tribe to be male.

End game stuff:
Mordin died :( - wrrrry? Everyone is loyal, I'd given him his Tech upgrade.
If I re-do it and bring him on the last leg, will it just pick someone else? Not sure what to do...

Just got the final squadmate and doing the loyalty mission.

Question for that;
is it possible to take Legion with you on Tali's loyalty quest? Does it have any impact?

Yes, there is some extra dialog and special reactions. It gives you a bit more insight.

Unfortunately,
I was not able to do Legion's loyalty quest after since after Tali's quest it automatically went into the Joker sequence. So after that, if you do any more missions instead of immediately going to the base your crew starts getting killed so you're forced to choose between Legion or the crew.
.

I reloaded a save instead. :lol

I can't figure out how to fire the M-920 Cain. I assume it has to be charged at 100% before it can be fire. Do I have to press and hold or what?

The comic isn't that great at all.

But I might end up doing the same thing.

I absolutely love the combat in ME2, but I really hope they add cover hopping and the ability to change which shoulder the camera is over to the third game.

Hold down the trigger. It'll fire when it's ready.

I'm still not feeling this game. The combat is improved but its still "walk around with nothing, hear music start, kill enemies as they come through a choke point, repeat ad nauseum."

The missions feel tedious. I'm sick of recruiting people and the side missions require no exploration just pressing the "a" button when you hit a planet or move on.

Scanning is a joke. Why replace the mako which was at least slightly interesting in that you actually got to drive something or do anything and even stumble across a mission that wasn't on the map. Scanning is just terrible.

It makes me mad because ME2 has SO much polish, but the overall game just seems so linear and dumbed-down. Case in point: there is nothing to scan anymore when you are on missions everything you do just nets you credits. Since inventory is gone there is no impetus to explore things on foot except for the eventual threat of missing a new weapon that is hidden in all the worthless credits. I miss finding codex entries ala Metroid Prime while on missions. Now they just pop up.

So, is there like a "timer"
after you get the IFF and Legion, that determines when the crew abduction thing happens?
Or is it not until after
Legion's loyalty mission?

After you get the IFF, the game lets you do one sidequest while it's being installed (I assume that's to let you do Legion's loyalty quest). Once the abduction occurs, if you do anything before going on the suicide mission, the crew starts being liquidated. I think that the more missions you do, the more of your crew dies.

So to directly answer your question, it's the IFF mission that starts the timer, and the timer stands at one mission.

I'm so pissed off at the
everyone survives the suicide mission
achievement. All my crew members are loyal, except for Miranda who is glitched. (I did her loyalty quest, got the achievement for making her loyal, and got her alternate costume, but in the info panel, it says Loyalty: Normal and she doesn't have that orange circle under her character...) I've tried several combinations that have been proven to work for others and none of them work for me (they usually end up in
Miranda dying
) I've purchased all the upgrades too...

I think I screwed up when
I took Jack's side during the argument
and now Miranda hates me. I've been trying to get my Paragon to 100%, but I'm at like 98% now and cannot find anything else to do. And yes, I have respec'd several times, and I still can't hit that 100% mark. :(

15 hours in now. Finished Horizon and did Jack's and Jacob's loyalty missions, and am about half way through Garrus' mission.

- Horizon is fucking beautiful. That giant spire-looking ship reaching to the sky was awe inspiring.
- I liked Jack's loyalty mission, but it felt really short and abbreviated.
- Jacob's loyalty mission kinda sucked, but then again, Jacob kinda sucks :lol

You lost her loyalty. During those intercrew conflicts, if you take one person's side over another you will lose a person's loyalty, permanently. The only way to avoid that I know for certain is to have a high enough Paragon to charm your way out. I assume if you have a high enough Renegade, you could intimidate your way out as well.

It's also the most fucked up in the game though, if you think about it. It's too bad they have to skirt around the issue.

Now, it's a very fun example of said design, but it's still pretty neutered, and continues the regressive slide of WRPGs in general and Bioware titles in particular (with Dragon Age being something of an exception).
If Mass Effect 2 is an example of WRPGs regressing then I welcome the regression of WRPGs. ME2 is all of the things I love about RPGs in general without any of the tedious shit that stops me from putting any more than 10 hours into any given one.

Yeah, that's why I'm trying to get my Paragon to 100 at the moment. If it's at 100, you can make amends with the character you pissed off and (possibly?) regain her loyalty back. At least that's what I'm hoping... but if not, I guess I'll give up and get it in my fem Shep Renegade playthrough.

Somehow I don't think that'll work...

Shall also getting cracking on my renegade playthrough..
To import renegade ME1 character or use ME2 character and get to 30....

Out of curiousity (endgame spoilers):
Has anyone had a non-loyal Miranda on their team at the end and chosen to blow up the collector base? I had a loyal Miranda, and when the Illusive Man told her to stop me, she resigned from Cerberus. I assume a non-loyal Miranda would actually try to stop me. Do you get in a fight with her? Kill her? Anyone know?

Any word yet on the # of endings? ME1 had 4 if I recall (council lives/vote Anderson, council lives/vote Udina, council dies/vote Anderson, council dies/bote Udina).

There are more than 80, I would assume, considering
the combinations of who lives and who dies. But it would mostly be cosmetic, and I'm talking about differences during the final mission. If just ending, then there would be 20 different ones considering who lives and who dies, and whether you blew up the base or not.

I'm really not feeling the storyline so far. I was such a huge fan of the original game, and its such an heartbreaker to admit that I'm having problems with this one. Also it sucks that they toned down the rpg stuff in combat.. My character is seemingly an expert in every weapon now. Also; I barely use my teammates now, they just control each other by themselves. I'm playing on normal and I got killed twice due to me being unable to jump over something to go in cover.

Everything is by the book so far, and it honestly felt like a game based on fanfiction

It's .. really strange how this sequel is not clicking with me at all. I think the highlight has been the Joker/AI stuff and the plague doctor interraction.

My team seems so generic so far, i swich between them without caring much.
