I'm just now on the normandy where I can do what I want, and I've talked to all the crew available.
It's kind of weird. I think the way I'm feeling thus far is ME1 was like looking at a normal mirror (since it's the first, establishing and all), ME2 was like looking in a frosted mirror (looks very similar, but some things are different), but ME3 feels like looking in a funhouse mirror. All of the parts are there, but it just doesn't really look the same at all. I'm not sure if I like that or dislike that, but it's kind of how it feels. Everything is familiar, but so different it's like I'm playing an entirely other series/game. Between the different sounds, the strong use of blacks, and the even blockier designs of armor and things, and all the SHINY on the citadel... it just has this somewhat uncomfortable feel right now. I'm hoping it'll just take a little getting used to.
Combat was pretty boring so far, honestly. I'm just playing on normal at the moment, but it feels kind of lazy, in regards to enemies. I'm rolling Vanguard, and I basically just hide in cover and repeatedly hit the "pull" button to kill everything. I'll still charge and melee once in a while, but pull's so effective that I haven't fallen on my shotgun much at all. In fact, I think I only fired my gun three or four times, outside the early stuff with Anderson.
I like the addition of the quicksave, but I'm not sure I like that they got rid of holstering weapons in its stead. It'll depend on how effective and close to the time I hit quicksave that it actually proves its value.
The kid stuff is so incredibly hamfisted, weak, and expected. Oh noes, not poor, little, innocent Timmy! MY HEART STRINGS HAVE BEEN TUGGED! The dream sequence with him had me cracking up. Seriously? The kid on fire? hahahahahaahahaha
I think they'd have been better off leaving that on the cutting room floor. It's earth, I don't need some little kid to make me invested in a motive behind wanting to save the planet.
Ugh, that snooki/video game lady is awful. What a terrible reason to have her on board. Not to mention she sounds completely bored with all of her readings. "Oh, thanks, you just made my ratings go through the roof." Really? Are you being sarcastic? I'm really not sure.
LOL REALLY? Please don't tell me that's all Ashley was here for. Geez, I can't even visit her room again after that one cutscene.
At least, I'm a little more pleased that we're getting full lines of dialogue referencing things we did in past games. Even if it comes off as more of "I'M READING A LIST" than fitting organically. Well, other than Dr. Michel. That one was okay, so far.
The thing that probably bothers me the most is how urgent they tried to establish everything at the start, but shortly after people are telling me "hey, stop by when you aren't doing anything." Well, you know, I should probably be doing something ALL THE TIME. I don't want to, from a player's perspective, but the story feels so undercut with the subquest/downtime stuff.
