Smart.....

Apparently the Indian Ocean doesn't have a warning system like the Pacific...no warning system coupled with poor living conditions equal a lot of innocent people dead. :(

Hopefully the sub-continent gets their act together so such a disaster doesn't happen again :\
Apparently there are more after shocks to come......

And not to mention this all too common scenario:

Today morning at about ten o clock, we heard that our island has been hit by tsunamis. Here in Sri Lanka we have very little knowledge about tsunamis, so we all went down to the sea and watched to our amazement that the sea had receded and everything was calm, so we were all swimming and fishing, and no one noticed that the sea level had gradually risen, until the sea became very rough and within a time space of five minutes our shores were hit by a large wave. Fortunately we were all able to escape as the wave was not very large and was slow moving, but still some houses along the coast were damaged.

If this one would have been near a large city the deathtoll would have been astronomical.

Imagine a 9.0 happening at the San Andreas fault.. hasta la vista baby !

This is horrible.

I'm surprised it wasn't more dead.

Phi Phi and Phuket, the Maldives and Southern Sri Lanka are all big holiday destinations in this part of the world and they were chokkas for chrissie. Getting reports here of people getting swept out of restuarants in Phuket and other people waking up swimming. I'm really surprised its not more. They are reporting 14000+ here but there are large chunks with no reports.

Oh man, woke up this morning only to see the death toll rise to 10 000+. A few members of my church ,including the pastor was supposed to visit Phuket this week but did not do so in the end for some reason

Ruh oh.. sounds like we're going to have to send a crew of 20yr olds to the center of the Earth to save everyone. :(

On a serious note, this is truely terrible.. It's so hard to fathom that our existence is dependent on the ebs/flows of a sea of magma.

....man...that's some sci-fi shit!! I truly see something like Deep Impact, The Day After Tomorrow happening and that's scary...i really hope the government has plans in place in case of such a catastrophe.

Are there any videos of the wall of water coming in? That had to been unreal to see... and survive...

Yeah seriosuly I would love to know how it looks. Only thing I've seen resembling a real Tsunami's would be superman saving metroplis.

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
They have videos but it looks nothing like you would think. The water just crashes in low not with a huge wall 'deep impact' style.

I don't think you'll see anything remotely close to what you see in the movies. These waves usually break hundreds of metres off shore, then sweep in like a raging torrent.

The amount of energy that a 9.0 earthquake releases is the equivalent of 32 Gigatons of TNT being set off...

That's something like 20 times the energy of the entire US nuclear arsenal (7000 nukes @ 150 -300 kt each).

From that same site:
12.0 on Richter is equal to 160 trillion tons of TNT. What's really incredible though is that is the same amount of energy that the Earth receives in sunlight every day.

Remember that earthquake in Turkey? Hopefully this isn't something similar to that where the death toll just continues to rise :(

CNN has switched over to CNN Asia...they showed an animated satellite view of what the tsunamis looked like as the raced from the epicenter toward land.

My friend is alive. But supposedly he's trapped. It's been a while since they've last spoken to him.

I believe he's OK, but it's scary.

I tell you what though, if I lived on the beach and felt an earthquake, the 1st thing I'd do is find out where it came from. Did these people have no warning whatsoever? This is the 21st century after all, not the middle ages.

My friend seems okay, too -- she was able to get some wireless internet at the airport and she posted just before her flight arrived. I caught her while she was still logged on the board and asked if she knew about the earthquake. I don't think she's even aware of it because she was stuck out in some booney hospital in central Thailand north of Bangkok. She must have been in a rush because she didn't reply, but thank heavens she's safe. Glad to hear your friend is okay as well, despite the unfortunate situation.

Apparently these regions were not under whatever warning systems the rest of the world is, for earthquakes, tsunamis etc. (excuse the vague / poor wording, as I am not clued in on the exact details).

9.0..... holy shit. Tsunami warning system works only on Pacific.

I've experienced a 5.6 quake in 1998 (very unpleasant event with epicenter around 25 kilometers from here, caught us during lunch).

A friend of mine is in the affected area right now, and she doesn't have a phone so i have no idea what happened to her...i think she's probably ok though since only 6 Australians are missing right now and it's unlikely shes one of them...

I just heard something on the news about a fresh quake in the area- measuring 6 on the richter scale....christ

Damn! I feel a little guilty, that I spent half my day down at Cottesloe, swimming in the ocean that took 20,000 + lives in one foul swoop.

But, fuck... it was hot today. :/
