Mechassault 2: Lone Wolf - IGN review

8.0 Presentation
The simplistic, uneventful story is weak and silly that's made worse by the remarkably bitchy Major Natalia Kerensky.
9.0 Graphics
You want special effects -- environmental warping, heat blurs, great animations, and more? You got it.
9.0 Sound
Excellent use of Dolby 5.1. Decent voice-overs and a solid, dynamic score.
8.0 Gameplay
The battleArmor, VTOL, and overall diversity of mechs is excellent. The online games are awesome, but the single-player game is simple, too easy, short and disappointing.
10 Lasting Appeal
The 10 online games provide incredibly long hours of fun. The Conquest mode could very well be the thing that makes it an all-time great...or not.
8.9 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

"Day 1's take on the MechWarrior universe is a stripped down arcade affair, much like the first, favoring action and straightforward destruction over everything else. It's easy to get into and play and its both offline and online. Like its predecessor, Lone Wolf favor online over offline play. That directly translates into a very linear, brief and rather easy single-player mode that will not satisfy kids who don't have online connections. In this regard, it's a superb rental but not a good purchase.

For online players, the world of MechAssault 2 is your oyster. The online aspect has exploded into a deep, diverse, and potentially awesome experience. We've played most of the online matches, so we know they're excellent, as they favor team play, the smart use of a variety of mechs and the all-important BattleArmor and VTOLs. We were unable to play a significant amount of the Conquest mode, so that remains to be seen. In all, MechAssault 2 is a bigger, better, badder sequel that rewards Xbox Live players and doesn't do much for offline players. Also, don't compare the score directly to the first game. Technology moves quickly in the videogame world, and so do expectations. In every way MechAssault 2 is a far better effort than the first. But two years after the first, the level design is still linear, there is very little exploration, it's still got a weak single-player mode, and the story and characters are weak."

What's the release date on this beast? I might get it, just to have a new online game to play...But then again, I might not ever get away from Halo 2 on Xbox Live so...

I expected more of this games single player mode. Its only worth a rental now as peeps over here play the games on live for a couple of weeks and then the available games just disapeer.

MA2's single player is a real stinker. like, actually worse than the prequel's single player.

Oh well it is all about multiplayer!

How the $%@# can you have a review without any info on the Conquest mode?! This could be so sweet!

There is so much more to tell about online, but the basics are evident. It's prettier, faster, supports clans well, and the variety of mechs creates more assorted strategies and tactics. The new game types also create a superb variety of online choices.

IS THIS A PREVIEW OR A REVIEW?!

I know not many people don't actually read most reviews anymore but I do. Ugh that 'review' is grating.

"Mech Assault 2 potentially all this cool stuff, but we aren't sure yet or don't know." WTF.

The reason why none of us could review the Conquest mode is because well, it kind of requires the game to be on Xbox Live proper with y'know, thousands and thousands of active players to make the whole thing work. We could look at what it does and project how we think it might be like, and whether it's any fun, but this is definitely one of those games that need a re-review for its multiplayer once it's launched on Xbox Live proper.

Real shame about the single player game though.

Wow, I actually didn't think that was possible. Thanks for the heads up though.

That's a bummer - solid single player modes are pre-requesits for me. I bought Halo, Halo 2 and Crimson Skies for single-player, with muli for gravy. I was considering MA2 since they were promising a much bigger campaign and the game looked great....but now it looks like a no-go. Too bad.

Dammit MS... when do you guys plan on bringing this glory back to the PC and cutting out the arcade and fisherprice toys?

It's sad that MW2 is still the best of the series.

By the time MW5 is done, I expect the graphics to be better than the quality they use for the Timberwolf render on the MW2 box... using that model too!

I could have sworn i read somewhere that Day 1 studios were gonna do the single player right this time. Guess they decided to screw over the people without live again. Man, the single player seemed like it had a ton of potential, way to go Day 1.

Most people buying MechAssault 2 could probably give a rip about the single player. I'm buying it for online play via Xbox Live. It's good to play together :)

Goddamnit. I am so sick of the 'oh well, who cares about single player, online is all that matters' crap. Guess what, there are plenty of us who don't give a flying fuck about online play. I deal with enough jerks at work, no thanks. I'm glad for the online crowd and all, but it just plain sucks that the rest of the game gets the shaft. /bitch, moan, etc.

How the heck do you deliver a worse solo campaign than the first game? It was virtually nonexistent!

Bleh. As someone else mentioned, -1 Mechassault 2 sales, +1 Metal Wolf Chaos anticipation.

no need to get angry im just saying online looks to rock in this.
Doh, I'm not really tryin' to chew out anybody who's hyped to play on Live. I should have been more specific; I wish the developer hadn't slighted the single player game stuff, as it sounds like they have. Frustrating, is all.

Maybe I have "Live" envy? :D

So... what exactly is so bad about the singleplayer?

Short... good!*
Simple... good!* (unless this means boring at the same time)
Easy... good!*

* == my opinions as a busy adult gamer

"Disappointing" doesn't really say anything... I enjoyed MA's sp, and I have a hard time believing MA2's sp could truly be worse... che, what are your biggest complaints (story, diversity of missions etc)?

Crap and the initial previews said the single player was much better... now I'm here from you folks that it isn't.... with my self-imposed no online gaming ban still in effect that shoots this one down for me... and as a Mechwarrior fan of old(Screw these new Dark Age books) I was looking forward to it... well I'll at least check it out and see if what it has is enough to hold on to it.

Short... good!*
Maybe....

Simple... good!* (unless this means boring at the same time)
No... definitely don't agree.

Easy... good!*
Hell no... DEFINITELY don't agree.

Damn. An 8.9 from IGN Xbox means a 7.0 anywhere else. I was looking forward to this, as it was the only Live game I enjoyed.

If you enjoyed MA on Live, there's really no reason you wouldn't dig MA2 on Live -- it's actually a much deeper multiplayer experience. Even the non-conquest mode stuff is alot of fun.

Somehow, none of these dynamic battlefield strategies made it into the solo game, which is more concerned with linear as hell level designs, invisible event triggers, and the ridiculous pretense of a story. Plus, getting out of your mech feels pointless and broken in single-player.

Never played SOCOM for the singleplayer either so I'm not too bothered by the anemic single-player in this given the intriguing things being said about MA2 online. I enjoyed my share of the first one online and didn't spend much time with single player there either.

That said, developers really need to do a better job of positioning their online heavy games with an incidental single-player component. If you don't really intend to put the focus on the single-player offline experience then craft it as training for the online game or simply as an offline version of the online game (with bots) or don't do it at all.

I'll get the game anyways, as I do realize the multiplayer will be a blast. Just thinking about running my tank all over the battlefield while mechs are stomping around makes me feel like a kid again.

Well, crap. I'll probably play the damn thing anyway, but it becomes a rental instead of a purchase due to this.

Referring to the earlier short/simple/easy comment- hell no, at least in part. I don't mind a 'short' game as long as the difficulty and depth are present. Remove all three=suckage.

I couldn't agree with this more.

If it is true that the single-player mode is even weaker than that in the merely adequate first game, that is very disappointing. The first game was good in SP as a one-time through, but once done that was it, the missions weren't entertaining enough for me to play again, and score systems, unlockables, extra SP modes were all lacking.

But, hmm, it really seemed like they were prepping a meatier story and SP mode this time, with the prominent character emphasis/art and such we've been seeing in previews...

I'll have to see on rental if these comments about single-player ring true.

I don't know. I couldn't care less. I'm waiting to hear how Conquest works when it launches. I'd never finish the single player of this game and I have no interest in doing so. Socom II is one of my favorite games this gen and I've never finished the single player. Their priorities with this title are the same as mine, and that's fine by me. Now if it wasn't online enabled, it could be an empty disc for all I care. This is like telling me Rainbow Six has a bad ending, etc. I'll never know, that's not what some types of games are about and Mechassault at this point fits that category.

Mega-agreed.

They had much better singleplayer demo-levels on display at E3, for some WEIRD reason, they all got cut. The singleplayer is one big cry-fest. Sure it's playable, a little...

Multiplayer is a pearl, but only for Xbox Live gamers who are ready to invest time and effort. Personally I'm pretty dissapointed with the whole game as well. I'd give it more of an 8 overall. And I'm pretty nuts for MechAssault 1.

Crimson Skies too. The PC game is one of my favorite games of all time, and High Road to Revenge was "just" good.

To those who are saying that MechAssault is the only thing you've liked on Live or your favorite game on Live - what else have you played? I find there are so many better experiences available (MotoGP2, Halo 2, Links, ESPN Football, Midtown Madness, Pandora Tomorrow, etc.).
