Can you tell me what the game is about in a nutshell?
Sure, it's a pure rhythm game (but I assume you got that already because it's in the title hehe). Sort of like with Ouendan you have to time your actions. You don't make music, you time on the beat and
exactly on the beat. In the game you have a series of scenarios stages. For example, a girl is singing a song on a stage and you are a monkey as part of 6 monkeys that dance on the music (I'm not making this shit up :lol but when you see it with your own eyes, it puts a smile on your face because it's awesome). You clap "your" hands 4 times on the beat as part of the show, and also a waving motion with a clap (in which you hold your hands together for a second after the clap), and another clap followed by a jump in the air. During the song, at "scripted" events you have to perform them, first the clapping 4 times, and when the next event the other part. Like a cycle, it will repeat in this case. In other scenario's so far, either the way you have to perform tasks changes or speed or difficulty increases.
To do all this you basicly have 3 "buttons" to perform actions with, but instead of pressing buttons you of course use the touchscreen (in which you hold the DS like a book, similar to say Brain Training or Point & Click games on the DS). Tap on the touchscreen and in this case you clap in your hands, tap and hold the stylus down and you do the second motion, tap and swipe upwards and you clap and (when sliding) you jump in the air.
When you perform everything exactly on the beat the scenario plays out perfectly and you "win". If you get even one beat wrong, the remaining 5 monkeys that show their backside to you the whole time look sideways to "your" monkey and look in disgust / anger. :lol (I think the girl singing shows a sign of irritation too) It's hilarious imo. You get points and such based on your performance (either you fail, you pass with a "hmm.. well alright.." rating or you do a great job. There is a 4th rating, "perfect" but you only sometimes get an upportunity to try a scenario 3 times to get a perfect rating. If you pass one, you unlock the next one. With every scenario, you have a tutorial like system, in which you can get a hang of the motions you have to do before you do it "for real". The text is in Japanese but when you try what your supposed to do it all makes sense.
In this case scenario you had to do predefined actions in a group setting, but there are also scenario's where you have to repeat something exactly like someone else has done. Or react to them in a similar way, or have ongoing timed actions with increased difficulty etc. Very much diversity.
The game and gameplay focuses SO much on rhythm that you can play the game with your eyes closed if you want to. In fact, at some cases I already did sometimes because I didn't want to accidently make a mistake to get the gold rating so I focussed on the music and rhythm as much as I can. The game is really awesome imo.
Don't know how all this sounds to someone who doesn't know the game, and perhaps I didn't explain it very good but the gameplay is great imo. It uses "stylized Nintendo" and perhaps even quirky graphics (2D and sometimes 3D graphics but with "2D gameplay" but I'm not so far in the game so don't know about the ratio or something). The music is great (so far at least) even without earphones but with them on it's really good, replayability so far is very good, a lot of variation / diversity in scenario's, very high pick-up and play type game, but also suitable for long sessions. Oh, and lastly, the difficulty is pretty high. Not dumbed down or anything like that, it will kick your ass if you want a
near perfect rating, let alone perfect rating since you only get 3 changes and then you have to wait for another randomly chosen stage to try again. You have to basicly know the scenario and events like the back of your hand and constantly have to get it right every time. And then you have remixes that (I only have 1 remix so far), combines the previous (in this case) 5 scenario's and mixes them together, starting "slow" but the speed increases rapidly and like with all the other scenario's you can only make 1 or 2 mistakes (which is
very little) to get a gold rating (near perfect).
The fact that's it's Japanese hasn't bother me at all, only "problem" is the menu but you can get translations online I think. If you like these kinds of games, I would definitely recommend it.
