Media Create Sales 2/19 - 2/25

At over 100K, PSP does better than I thought it could. This is its 9th best week ever. With 42.4% of the weekly DS/PSP sales, this is PSP's highest ratio since the week of February 6, 2006. This brings its eight-week 2007 total to 438K, higher than its first eight weeks of 2006 (369K), though not quite as high as its first eight weeks of 2005 (443K).

Wii comparisons: At 13 weeks, Wii is where GCN was at 60.7 weeks, DS was at 7.2 weeks, and where PSP was at 12.5 weeks.

I was going to note that Wii should stop making up so much ground on GCN, since the comparison is reaching the point of GCN's second holiday season. However, looking back at those numbers it doesn't seem like GCN had a single week above 70K that year, though it's possible since one of Famitsu's two-week combo numbers is 132K.

PS3 comparisons: At 16 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 1.3 weeks, PSP was at 7.0 weeks, GCN was at 14.3 weeks, and where Wii was at 3.5 weeks.

PS3 vs Wii: If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 51.2 weeks (February 18, 2008). If "the flip" occurred between Wii/PS3 sales at this week's rates, they'd meet at 1.99 million units apiece in 16.7 weeks (June 21, 2007).

At this week's rates, DS catches up to PS2 in 40.9 weeks (December 8, 2007). It's worth noting that since DS and PS2 sales were so unchanged from last week, this is actually the same day the calculation led to last week.

PS3's performing better than the GC did at this point. At least that's something.
Though several others have pointed this out as incorrect, it's hard to tell how AniHawk meant it (or if he was lobbing a softball). However, in its first February GCN sales were in the 10-16K range each week, so PS3 is doing better in some ways. For that matter, if we're looking for a historical comparison to make with this week's Gundam Musou, here's GCN the two weeks before and after the release of Resident Evil remake. As usual with old stuff, it's Famitsu.

1.) DS was indeed sold out.
2.) The revenue spin is stupid, and it was already pointed out that it's false to begin with since PSP is only slightly more expensive in Japan.

Yeah, but if you remove all the units sold to non-gamers and people replacing their DS Phats, then the PSP is clearly the victor!

What's surprising about that graph is the Wii tracking just under the PS2 for that point of release. Nintendo needs to get more Wiis out there, stat!

Aren't GB + GBC shipments to Japan around 32 million? Those figures seem wrong..

When I check the shrine of data, they have GB (not sure whether it included GBC or not, but I guess it included GBC, since I can't find GBC name in that list) it at 32,43 Million since release on 1989 until 2002 March, so I am not sure which one is correct.

Maybe I made a mistake. Sorry about that.

But this fact reminds me that :
After DS goes over PS2 sales, the only thing remaining is for DS to go over GB+GBC sales, before we can crown DS as King of Japan, EVER. No but, no nothing.

I don't think it's blasphemous to say that the DS may hit that in its lifetime. Pretty astounding, doing what the GB did in 13+ years in 4 or 5? ****ing nuts.

Anecdotal evidence here (based on what i've heard from japanese friends), but wiis arent as sold out in Japan as they are in the US. People can go into stores and buy them. Still selling great of course, but not completely sold out in 5 min like in the US.

Those who don't think it'll surpass GCN in the end are only kidding them-selves though. FFXIII alone will allow it to do so.

Oh, no doubt it will surpass the GC. But that's not exactly a great achievement.

It's quite amazing how much different the PS3 has been received compared to PS2. Startling stuff.

Right now the PS3 has sold 3.25% of what the PS2 has sold in Japan total whereas the Wii has sold 39.90% of what the GCN sold.

It seems both companies have somehow managed to turn things around.

Is your chart based on actual sales number, or just # of games in the Top 30 or Top 50 ?

Your chart is based on Famitsu, right ? (the file name implies it)

My my, I've never thought I've seen the day when it is a achievement for PS3 to surpass GCN. 12 months ago we would have thought this is a no brainer.

Wait a second....the DS Lite has only sold 9 million units in Japan??? Is that it? What happened to all those 800K months? This week alone it sold over 150K, no?

Don't tell me the DS lite install base is greater in the U.S. than it is in Japan...

And DAMN at the PS3...dropping again. Wow! Sony's gearing up for the Euro launch right now, but it certainly won't ignore Japan. Things are definitely likely to pick up later in the year.

Everyone is STILL pissing and moaning about DS cart/Wii/Wiimote production? I don't know how many times this needs to be said before people actually get it:

Opening new fabrication plants is NOT A FAST OR CHEAP ENDEAVOR.

Foundries require many expensive devices to function. Estimates put the cost of building a new foundry over one billion US Dollars.

So yeah, coupled with all the paperwork and setup and cost... guess what? Nintendo is likely just as aware of the issue as you guys are, but simply can not get new fabs set up fast enough to satisfy the huge breadth of DS games that are big sellers, INCLUDING Nintendo's own in some cases.

... but I keep forgetting this is GAF, which perpetuates the "spoiled child" syndrome of the modern world. You want a pony and you want it NOW!! :lol

Nice, but PSP should have sold more considering a large, 700k-in-its-first-week title was just released. DS has been handicapped by shortages, but what's the PSP's excuse? They're all over Japan. It could have hit 200k.
MHP2 mostly sold to the previous MHP userbase, who already have PSPs?

DS = 136,128 units * 17000 yens/unit = 2,314,176,000 yens

Oh, look at that, the PSP did not outsell the DS even in terms of revenue!

A fab that only has one product, or just one customer is generally not called a foundry.

Poor dirtmonkey37. During his flinging, he didn't realize that DSL was release Mar 2, 2006 in Japan, so he didn't know that today is the day of DSL Anniversary. If it managed to sell 9 million units in 12 months, that mean the average is 750K/month, no ?
