Lowest PS3 point correct?

And looking at the upcoming release lineup..its only going to get worse.

If the PS3 really is as "future-proof" and full of "potential" as Kutaragi and Stringer would have us believe, what's to stop it from "re-launching" itself again in 4-5 years with essentially the same hardware (maybe + Wii functionality)? That would be the same situation that Nintendo was in for the start of the GameCube, and they "re-launched" essentially the same system (2 x power of GCN) + Wii-mote and are doing gangbusters.
That sounds like the N64->GCN transition in a way. N64 is beaten soundly by PS1, so the next system is made more PlayStation-like, but as a me-too system there's little reason beyond first-party support for people to get it instead of PS2. Were Sony to make PS4 essentially PS3 1.5 + Waggle, it'd be a "Wii too" without some extra reason for people to switch from a dominant Nintendo or Microsoft.

that's why he's the guy who gets to start these threads these days.

and to the posters above me, i don't think nintendo are going to start worrying about wii sales just yet. i mean, it's obviously a slow week, DS is less than 100,000... but the wii still sold over three times what the ps3 did.

Thanks for the info, as always, Vinnk. If I ever visit Japan, my first stop is behind that curtain in Goody. :lol

It's plain that both Nintendo systems are completely supply dependant. No worrying from anyone is needed.

So....the PSP is still doing well because of MHP2 (but no other Sony platforms), all Nintendo systems have massive shortages, and Microsoft is still doomed in Japan?

The problem is, if it continues to sell like this, it won't get the games to last that long. It really is that simple.

It's a Blu-Ray player that also plays games. It is uniquely positioned to withstand a large lack of games. Obviously, that won't endear it to non-HDTV owners, but it would still survive as a primary Blu-Ray player until the price could come down. Also, a little re-branding goes a long way (see: DS Lite).

Either way, I don't believe for a second that Sony isn't making a PS4. :)

Probably, but with Kuturagi's shift in positions, Sony may decide it is more economical to relaunch a "future-proof" 5 year old system with some touch up rather than to try to quadruple the power of the PS3 or something.

I'd say PS3 is getting close to the doomed category as well.

Aren't Wii and DS being constrained for Golden Week?

When the hell is Golden Week, btw?

I think its April 29th-May 5th or something along those lines.

And if anyone is tracking porn sales, "Helicopterman 2" is supply constrained.

It's so funny that we can tell the difference between a bad week for Nintendo and a week where they didn't ship as much as they could have.

It's also funny to see PS3 like that...

Not really. It's easy to assume, because one week they sell a lower amount, and then the next week they sell like 20,000 more than the previous.

Fluxuation. : /

It's easy though with the DSL. It's been selling over 100k a week since god-knows-when. When it hits a number like that all of a sudden it's due to shortages -- not because people are just deciding all of a sudden to not buy it.

PS3 1.0 + Waggle. The extra reason would be that it was already in a lot of homes and still plays the sames games that it has for the past 5 years. Except, now, the market might actually be ready for a 1080p video game system. It wouldn't have a new system shine, but then that's why they'd need to "re-launch" it.

It might not be enough to "win" the next round, but it would at least give them a leg up on the competition at the beginning of next generation.

I hope those lot rambling on about the PS3 being the PS2 redux over the past few years (and up until recent times) feel really, really stupid now.

That said, there still are people like this unfortunately.

I have to wonder...is under 10k a possibility for PS3? At this point all bets are off.

Why else would DSL sell less than 100,000 in a week? Everybody from Vinnk to jonnyram make it seem that if 300,000 of them were available on a day, they'd all be sold within a week easily.

All this PS3 doom and gloom but according to sony standards ps3 is closing the gap on the wii! Sony wins. :)

I remember when the DS sold 108k in 2005 when Jump SuperStars hit, and we all were like WTF ZOMG! Today, we're dissapointed when the DS sells 80k :p

So, even if you combine every single Playstation product sold... that number STILL doesn't exceed the DSLite on one of it's lower weeks?

Wow, just wow.

People expected the PS3 to give the DS competition. So laughable looking back. :lol

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly percentages between the two are 24.7 / 75.3 . Lifetime: 29.3 / 70.7. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 68.1 weeks (July 20, 2008). If the flip occurred between the two systems, they'd meet in 33.4 weeks (November 20, 2007).

Wii comparisons: At 18 weeks, Wii is where GCN was at 67.9 weeks (December 28, 2002), DS was at 16.7 weeks (March 24, 2005), PS2 was at 16.3 weeks (July 20, 2000), and PSP was at 46.9 weeks (October 28, 2005).

PS3 comparisons: At 21 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 2.4 weeks (March 14, 2000), PSP was at 9.3 weeks (February 7, 2005), GCN was at 15.1 weeks (December 23, 2001), and Wii was at 4.0 weeks (December 23, 2006).

PS2 vs DS: Being a slow week for DS, the projected meetup date with PS2 is far out: 72 weeks (August 16, 2008).

Nintendo passes 3 million hardware sales YTD in 13 weeks. Last year it took 21 weeks to reach that milestone.

Microsoft is just a hair under 80K for the year. A small number compared to the other two, but a monster number for MS. In one quarter of the year, they've done better than in the first 3 quarters combined of any other year.

I don't think you can just relaunch an aging system like that if it's just been doddering. What you're suggesting here reminds me of the people who say Wii should've just been an add-on to GCN. It boils down to: if it's not a new system with a fresh start, who (publishers and end users) will care?

Maybe PS3 is just biding its time for the next round of systems, where it will already be entrenched with the hardcore and ready to pounce on the new HDTV-owning, "$300 isn't too bad" mass market that the Wii is now courting.

There is no way that Sony ever planned on underperforming for four years just so they could 'relaunch' in 2010. It would hurt their profits for the next four years & do irreparable damage to their brand perception. They overshot the needs of consumers and overestimated the invulnerability of the playstation brand.

When they future proofed the technology they did so on the assumption that they'd be successful and would be able to drag out the profitability of this console generation, not as an emergency 'free kick' if they needed a boost in 2010.
