Media Create Sales: Week 4, 2017 (Jan 23 - Jan 29)

Depressing debut for Resident Evil 7: biohazard, the list of titles that are underperforming in Japan is getting bigger and bigger as time goes by.

Hell, even Pokémon Sun / Moon is struggling to reach Pokémon X / Y while in the West is selling notably better.

I think we're looking at a final fantasy 15 situation with Re7. The numbers have declined from past titles but it sold so well in the west that it makes up and then some with its total sales but we'll see.

Did it? It's behind 5 and 6 in UK so far.

Final Fantasy 15 was behind in the uk and Japan when you compare it to 13 but in the US it sold really well. 15 had the best month ever (December) in the US when you compare to past titles. I think re7 will follow similar path

To be fair didn't FFXV have literally the longest period of sales possible for the month of December?

Not to say it didn't do great.

This is what happens when you try to return to the "roots" of a series no one wants to return to, and do "innovative" things like introduce a new character with no ties to the series mythology.

Here's a wake up call to Capcom - People don't buy Resident Evil to be scared, they buy it to play as Chris Redfield, punch boulders, and shoot armies of zombies. More shooting, less scaring.

Get it right with Resident Evil 8 and you might have a change of salvaging the franchise.

What about those world wide sales though. Japan isn't the world.

FFXIII is close to FFXV sales in UK.

RE7 is not doing 1.5 million first month in the US like RE5 did. No fucking chance.

Well it did come out at the very end of November so it does help but square seems to be very pleased with the sales. My argument is yes I know it won't touch re5 and 6 in sales but it's pathway will be similar to final Fantasy. Declined sales in Japan and uk but us picks up the slack and the goal is to hit 4 million shipped March 31st. It's very possible but it's all speculation until we get numbers of course

Based on Capcoms financial expectations we should assume the budget of re7 is smaller to 6. The goal is not to match or be near re5 or 6 but the goal we should be talking about is if they can hit 4 million shipped by March 31st because that's their expectations

Which is not what you claimed when I quoted you. You said it would be similar to FF15 in the US. It wont. Not even close. The game is obviously going to be more profitable than 6 but the game is going to decline in sales. There is no way around that.

Pretty much expected RE7 not to do well in Japan with it being a reboot set in first person.

The game seems to be focused very much on the western audience. Though the lack of returning characters, co-op, action etc. could hurt it there too.

Either way, it shouldn't be hard for Capcom to profit off of the game overall due to the smaller budget and shorter development time.

Definitely true, I agree but if it can be more profitable for Capcom I think they will be pleased. Then they know not to do anymore global bio-terrorism action games because it may not make their money back.

People like to bring up RE7 budget, making money and all that, but is this situation good for Capcom? Their biggest brand potentially reduced to like half of its previous audience and losing a lot of popularity. They're in entertainment business, sure you want to make money on every product, but more so you want to create, maintain and grow an stable audience, who is to say next RE isn't going to drop even lower, what then? RE is supposed to carry the company not to just carry itself and sell for meager profits on 2-3 million.

For big publishers a 2-3 million selling game isn't even worth making nowadays because the margins aren't worth it. You can come and talk all how RE7 was cheaper to make but there is no way even that is sustainable on 2-3 million sales long term, let alone when you have a sharp decline in the brand's popularity which could mean future downward trajectory too.

Kind of expected for RE7 if you ask me... wouldn't expect many titles (if any!) to perform better on PS4 now than they did on PS3 in its prime. If you look when RE6 launched the userbase on the PS3 was around 8.5 million, almost double the PS4's current base.

Also surely the change to first-person was a decision geared towards Western audiences, where the console market is much more stable and profitable? Fully understand we've come a long way from the days where FPS games were a no-go in Japan, but still...

Pop Quiz: What was the PS3 userbase when RE5 was released, and how much did RE5 sell in that first week? :)

RE7 has already shipped 2.5 million. I highly doubt RE's budget was at the state that 2-3 million is not making money.

You do understand that at the end of the day RE's decline in Japan from 6/5 is a loss of 300-500k retail sales. Western sales have always been far more influential for the series.

That's not his point. His point is that even if it makes money, it's a small scale profit margin project. It's not a mega blockbuster, which is what defines big publishers. This sort of profit isn't even worth it to most big publisher, so if it is indicative of what Capcom is happy with now, then they are no longer a big player in the market.

Thats what I'm questioning though? Acting like RE7 will have an LTD of 2-3 million sounds insane.

Capcom's best selling game was 6 million after numerous years. They were never to be considered on the same level as certain other pubs. This should be obvious seeing how a lot of their next gen ventures have been funded by Sony or MS.

A better launch, but the change to FPS I do think was a factor and the Japanese market was probably a tad healthier ~8 years ago.

Resident Evil 5 and 6 both did about 6 million shipped according to capcom. There is pretty much no reason why RE had to decline and change direction as a series besides Capcom being incompetemt as fuck.

I know Gaf (enthusiasts as a whole) dislike 5 but the game is actually very well liked among the general audience. What they did with 6 was I dont even know but the coop action direction was not hurtimg the framchise honestly.

I remember people saying the same for SFV or some other games lately...

If they cant sell through that shipment then they may as well change series direction again and give me more Resident Evil Brosplosion cause that shit is actually a proven seller.

If Monster Hunter fails the transition and RE underperforms there won't be a Capcom for long. I have been waiting for a chinese buyout for years, but it seems not even them want to throw money at this shitfest of a company!

A better launch, but the change to FPS I do think was a factor and the Japanese market was probably a tad healthier ~8 years ago.

By the time Capcom's nepotistic management drives all their franchises into the ground, China can literally buy then for ten cents.

HAHAHAHAHAHA GET IT????

Don't worry. MH5 PS4 will sell more than all the 3DS entries because the west actually really loves MH and just doesnt know it yet.
