Meta Quest 3 | OT + Review Thread |

Someone could easily argue that the entirety of the VR library, PSVR, PSVR2, and PC VR / Steam VR amounts to just a couple games. Alyx, RE7, Village, GT7, etc. All the rest of the crap on VR is tech demos and proof of concepts. It's pretty disingenuous but some people want games "just like Alyx" or "just like GT7" and there's really not any on the respective systems, without making concessions. There's hundreds of great games, like Beat Saber etc, but someone into AAA JRPGS or TPS etc isn't going to looking to spend hundreds of hours in Beat Saber.

I think mods are super underrated for VR. Anything beyond B tier is worth it for most and there's some setup. If they're a snob that wants a AAA "made for VR" feeling game, then the S tier works.

How dare you, this is disgusting!

Btw guys, to watch videos in VR, the simples way is to search for the "VR" tag on videos websites(assuming you are using chrome browser). If the video don't open Fullscreen for you, maybe you have to click on the "VR glass cardboard" icon on the video to recognize your VR device. If the is mage don't adjust correctly, go back to the page where the video is playing and click on the gear to select the VR device you are using. Happy research.

  • The setup took a bit longer than expected as my headset was stuck on an updating screen after it said it had completed updating then 5 minutes later the screen went away so I'm not sure what that was about.
  • The headset only feels marginally more comfortable than the Quest 2. I was using the default head strap for about 5 minutes when the doorbell rang and it was my elite head strap with battery. That box felt heavier than the Quest box. I installed it and still the headset only felt a bit more comfortable. I can tilt the headset to be more away from my face but then it adds more light coming in on the bottom so a trade off. I'll have to spend more time with it to see if it bothers my skin like the quest 2.
  • The controllers are good but they do get sweaty very quickly.
  • The auto-room boundary setup was pretty quick and worked well.
  • The passthrough was pretty grainy for me. I have a large room with sectioned off lights so I didn't have all of them on so that could be why.
  • The first game I tried was the First encounter and that was actually pretty cool. It was fun seeing my room being destroyed by my bullets and the creatures trying to get in.
  • I only got to try Virtual Desktop for 5 minutes as my lunch break was ending so I'll have better impressions later, but it did work.
  • I do have some native Quest games that I also have on PC so I'll check the differences tonight.

Took a long time to setup here at the office, but played a game of that shoot the puffins or whatever. The puffballs were climbing all over the desks.
Edit. Game is called First Encounters and is pre installed.
The floor is several inches above the actuall floor. I remember the PSVR2 had this same issue but there was a fix for the PSVR2.
edit the quest 3 can fix with a redo of play space. now floor is close to actual floor.

It has external speakers. That surpirsed me that I had external sound playing the game.
Several others here are lined up to play. Might have a few converts after work buy one.
Hope the battery holds out.

A lot of light leakthrough the bottom nose area. It does not seal at all at the bottom.

No Apple Pay from iPhone 🙄. Will have to enter credit card info to buy games.

The included game Wrath of Asgard doesn’t come out till December.

In the systems menu under power there is a toggle to increase battery by decreasing graphics. I’ve not yet toggled it.

Bought Walk About Mini Golf for the Quest 3. It’s one of my favorites from the PSVR2. It looks and plays similar. But I can literally walk about with the Quest 3, The PSVR2 really required teleport more. Either is a good VR game.

Also bought the package of Red Matter 1&2 for the quest 3. Ive not played much Yet.

The meta store does Not give install sizes so have no idea how big each game is in the store.

the controllers use regular AA batteries so are not rechargable. I will replace with eneloops.

speaking of controllers, they track very well. Similar to PSVR2.

Tracking position also works very well. I’ve walked all over my living room. It keeps track including me squatting down or jumping.
Very similar to PSVR2. Good enough for me. I’ve not used the VIVE with the external tracking boxes so I can’t compare. But it’s fast and seems accurate to me.

I have an Anker power bank 26800 watts power bank that I connected with the Quest 3.
It is heavier than the headset but kept it charged while playing. I could put the power bank in my pocket with a usb cord to headset ala apples solution to extend play time.

Had a reasonable shot this evening.
* A visible improvement to FOV vertically and horrizontally compared to Q2. It's not massive but it's noticeable.
* A slight improvement in blacks. Contrast seems better and colours pop.
* Clarity is massively improved to me. I always found it difficult finding the sweet spot but no problem at all with Q3. The resolution bump makes a big difference. I think you could definitely use this for productivity. Text on websites etc... looked very readable.
* MR is amazing. I'm very impressed. Room mapping is speedy and fun. I'm liking MR a lot more than I thought I would.
* Made for Q3 games. I tried Red Matter 2. Holy fuck! Honestly I couldn't believe my eyes. If you had told me it was a PCVR game I would believe it. Everything was super sharp and the visuals stunning.
I really hope other devs do the same to their games.

Mine has just come, quickly set up and tried auto roomscale and first encounters but now got it on charge, for me sweet spot is miles better on the quest 3 then the 2, everything seems more clear on the 3, fan noise can hear the fan on quest 3 while setting up and is annoying and thought my quest 2 didnt make a noise went back to my 2 and there is fan going but no way as loud as the one in my 3, auto room scale and although picks wall and furiture out it keeps putting the ground level a few inches higher then it is and didnt see a way to lower it unless i mark my own boundry out, but it 8pm in uk so once it charged it getting turned off then ill try it tomoro when off

The pupil distance dial does not tell you where your eyes are unlike the PSVR2 (that could see your eyes). I assume you just dial in whatever is sharpest.

It should pop up a graphic with numbers telling you your IPD.

I remember a number popup but it changed with the dial. I wonder if the PSVR2 could tell me my IPD and I could just set it in the Quest 3 the same.
But It was sharp and in focus while I was using it so might have it set correctly already.

Shitty OT, why even pretend you bother? You could have left it at "review thread" in your rush to be first/have most shitty threads or whatever is your schtick/competition with IbizaPocholo. Did you call dibs or ever partake at all in any previous VR discussion other than bs hit and run thread making?

For those who didn’t have a Quest previously, here’s a referral for for $30 free credit when you set up your Quest (do this prior to setup!).

Also if anyone needs a 25% discount on any popular games direct from the Meta store, send me a message (e.g. Beat Saber, Eleven Table Tennis, Virtual Desktop, Walkabout Minigolf).

Want my Quest 3 today, but Amazon is only shipping mine today so have to wait till tomorrow. Boo.

Got mine, this thing is fooking bad ass!

So, happy that I held out for it. Virtual desktop is insane. Headset is nice. The lenses and resolution is mental.

Only complaint is lack of oled so blacks are more grey...overall though. Amazing.

How do I watch 3d porn on it?
The best way is to sub to a site with 8K content like povr and then download a ton of videos to your PC. Cancel a week or so before the month is over to prevent auto charge. Then sub a few months later for newer content. From there use Skybox to stream it to your headset. Virtual Desktop also works ok you just select your video folder on your PC, then in the menu you use 'Dome' I believe, or you can use 'SBS' and tweak the 'Distance' and 'Size' and you'll end up with really cool/weird looking footage with depth to it. You can also directly load them to your headset, but at 15-25GB/vid you'll run out of space real fast. Streaming from the net isn't great, imo. Especially when using a VPN.

Lol what are you guys talking about.
I was the biggest vr apostle. I had dk1 in 2013, dk2, cv1, quest, 3 rift S headsets, psvr2.
I am always the biggest vr sucker and early adopter.

And this experience gives me the right to critique atrocious vr games. No. 99% of vr trash is not better than Forspoken. Forspoken is a fulyl featured real video game believe it or not (you would know if you played it)
In fact, vr games are so simplistic because they must allow for real life movement. That's why you will never have crazy gameplay like forspoken in vr.
yes the tech is amazing but games are mostly not. Shooting is most of the gameplay in vr and it becomes boring quickly

I finished Alyx 3 times and it became apparent very quickly how simple the game is gameplay wise compared to half life 2.
You fight 2-3 enemies at a time who stand in place. They do everything to not overwhelm the player with real action like in real game.
VR games are great fun and novelty when you are a hyped amateur.
But once you play game nb 71 with the same over tutorialization with annoying voice over, you really don't care anymore.

I am sorry if you are hyped for vr and I am not but I have experience to back up my skepticism.
PSVR2 got some good vr games like re8 or gt7 but I really disliked the optics and comfort on that one.
I finished Horizon vr too and it was everything I hate about vr games. It's so simple and so boring.

It's the Wii effect all over again and like the Wii at the time, once the novelty wore off, many VR headsets are gathering dust. At least the Wii had Zelda and the Mario Galaxy games.

Much like the Quest, the Wii's secret ultimate weapon was not Zelda or Mario, but RE4: Wii Edition, the only version of the game that improved upon the original Gamecube release.

And the Quest store has RE4 VR for me now. Maybe there's a bigger link than imagined!

The Wii had a great attach rate, for the era (before everyone had 1000 digital indie games), people bought and played games on it on par with PS2, or any great system, you being an ignorant fanboy of another brand and therefor a hater of it doesn't make your delusions true for it. Or for VR. Lol.

VR is also nothing like the Wii because it's not just one runaway success from one company but a slower ramp up of a new method (like consoles in the 70s) of playing games starting in its modern form from 2016, wanting to call it a fad in 2023 because of its ever-increasing reach is stupid af too.

My first impressions.

Passthrough is fine. It's not mind-blowing, but definitely the best I've seen and you could easily play a game with it.

Comfort is about as good as my Quest 2, but I had an aftermarket strap with Q2.

FOV is noticeably better, but I'm already used to it.

The big thing that stood out to me was PCVR. First thing I did was try Alyx and Asgard's Wrath wired and the clarity was a wow moment for sure even compared to my PSVR2. I wasn't prepared for that.

I think it's a combo of the lenses and the resolution bump but I was pretty surprised. It punches above the resolution advantage because of the lenses.

Thanks a lot!
That's pretty much how I felt about PSVR2 compared to Quest 2 - noticeable but not massive and that's about enough FOV to not being bothered by it. Very good!
Is it brighter than Quest 2? Also other reviewers said that colors are still muted - do you really think it's better than Quest 2 in terms of color?

I love to read all your impressions about this new hardware, I find it much more trustworthy then YT and the general media when it comes to previews and newly released hardware. I fell like they tend to sugarcoat everything.
Also, I hope VR truly catches on fire so we can all enjoy more of this medium. It is far more interesting than flat, imo. I remain very happy with my PSVR2 and have no intention to change (for now), but this thread somewhat brings back the - still kinda new - fond memories of playing with PSVR2 for the first time.
I hope you all enjoy the Meta Quest 3!

Any reviews and impressions for glasses wearers? I refuse to buy prescription lenses.
I wear glasses and set the Quest 3 to its furthest from face setting. glasses don’t touch the lenses and it was comfortable.
I have a pair of VR only glasses.
I would be Interested in some prescription inserts if they were under 50 bucks usd.

  • Luckily I was wrong about the comfortability as I was able to wear the headset for about 3-4 hours with no fatigue or irritation to my skin with the elite strap and battery. The quest 2 was 45min tops.
  • I played a lot of Virtual Desktop and had some issues initially. A month ago I bought two eero 6e mesh routers but I did not set them up in bridge mode so my PC which is wired had a different gateway than my Quest 3 so the devices weren't on the same network. I could only select about 50bits the vr settings and that wasn't good. Once I set the routers to bridge mode that fixed the issue and I could run at AV1(10bit) with 200bits.
  • I played Dirt Rally 2 and Automobilista 2 and with the better lenses and resolution the games looked great.
  • Also the quest didn't complain that I wasn't using the touch controllers like I remember the quest 2 doing while I was using my wheel.
  • I am really impressed with the speakers in the headset. Playing Senua's Sacrifice was great and I didn't feel I needed headphones.
  • The battery does drain pretty quick and I got about 4 hours with the extra battery of the elite strap.

Minsc

Gold Member
I'll post my initial impressions tomorrow I think, but quickly the elite battery strap is 100% worth the upgrade price in comfort and it's really slick the way it gives separate battery readings in the UI for the headset and strap.
Speakers are much better than I expected, clarity is stunning compared to the PSVR2, I pretty much cannot get anything to be out of focus even if I try to. Solid blacks don't compare to what I'm used to on the PSVR2 which I sorta expected, but whatever, the thing is so much fun, the freedom from wireless is awesome and the MR passthrough means you can use it anywhere without making zones and crap, and just do random stuff like check your phone or whatever.

The UI is fun, and the headset feels really snappy and fast too.

Tennis app with pass through is fun… had a tennis court in my living room.. this would be fun if it works outside.

I thought similar at first, but apparently using a VR set outdoors is not a good idea if there is any direct sun. From what I understand it's a really fast way to destroy the cameras in the headset. Could always clear out the garage or something I guess, but yeah, be careful about using it in sunlight.
