I was trying to destroy the semtex controllers on Shell 1-2 Connecting Bridge with just the SOCOM and you can destroy all of them on Extreme including one of the gun cipher ones EXCEPT for the other, farther gun cipher one. The pistol cannot reach that distance.

Are we playing Peace Walker?

I've been waiting on toparaman to see if he wants to play.

Something that just crossed my mind: Ground Zeroes really should go with the tagline "Tactical Espionage Action" instead of "Operations".

Yeah it should.

I'm still waiting on the confirmation that Kojima got that mosaic...

Did tora ever say he sent it out?

Grabbed this at NYCC yesterday. I love him.

So Jelly.

I think 'Operations' is quite fitting considering that we get to choose missions rather than the usual linear format of previous MGS titles (sans Peace Walker).

I'll be playing in about an hour. I'm guessing it's not going to work out this weekend. I'll try to let you guys know timings in advance next time, but this is a pretty busy time for me (graduating college in two quarters, and working on my senior project).

I've only played a few missions, so I'm still not that good. (Gameplay is really different from past MGS games!) Also I don't have a headset/microphone yet, but I'm going to try to get a cheap one by next weekend.

Oh wow, where I am it is 3:30 AM when you posted this. I wonder if a later time would be better.

Yeah, it was 1am for me, so I was asleep. Let's try a bit earlier, please.

Dog tag collection is complete (well, for the special items, I didn't go fully 100% because screw those Marine tags)

iIraqC4YDOUmk.gif

The best time to get the Plant tags is after meeting with Ames and before fighting the Harrier, with the exception the FA Connecting Bridge guard who disappears after that for some reason. Replaced by a second cipher. That guy you can get while defusing the bombs.

The most annoying part was everything from the Emma oil fence to the end of the game. When you're playing casually or on Euro Extreme it's an awesome experience but when you just want to get to the next difficulty it's an annoying case of "going through the motions". Otherwise MGS2 is as short a game as you are fast and I appreciate that. No APC SOP zombie gun turret moments or 10 minute motorcycle chases. And the Solidus torture was substantially shortened in the HD version. The Extreme RAY fight is as comically long as ever but it is what it is.

Everybody wants a different flavor of the remake pie and they all seem like warm gooey goodness.

I think a fitting title would be something along the lines of incorporating the word "Ouroboros" which, in case you don't know, is the greek word for the cyclical nature of something and it is often depicted as the image of a serpent or snake eating its own tail.

This is a tiny image but I believe the Arsenal Gear Pause screen shows an Ouroboros.

mgs2_arsenal_pause.gif
\

The turtle underneath is Arsenal and the palace on the turtle is the Big Shell. The snake eating itself may reference the fact that MGS2 was just MGS1 all over again in many ways.

My obsessive completionist mind took over when I was going for the MGS2 platinum that I had to go for 100% tags. Getting all those marine tags, I can recite that Dolph speech in my sleep. INTRUDER TO THE RIGHT!

I agree with you about going through the motions when you're on like 5 playthroughs in a row. I do kinda hate fighting through the Tengus on higher difficulties. The RAYs I can handle but those fucking Tengus, man.

They are surprisingly docile in the second arena fight. I thought I was gonna have to go to the back room and coolant it up but nope the regular old sword works fine. Just have to constantly be moving and blocking. The first part though, especially when you're at the end near the door is awful. Someone actually found a glitch to skip it in case you haven't seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suC8_F2-u4g

I find it's Snake that dies more than anything. That's an interesting glitch. I usually don't like skipping stuff in games but I've played this game a million times, I probably should feel guilty if I replay it on a higher difficulty again.

i have the same problem with this part, snake dies all the time...especially on hard or euro. if i ever am bored enough to go for that platinum, i'll definitely use that glitch

This Big Boss run is tense stuff but it feels good when you finally get it down. It's like mastering a dance routine.

Made it to Stillman. AB Connecting Bridge and the Dock were tricky to find a route! Also Snake sneezed on me in Engine Room :( The Gurlukovich soldier fight was surprisingly easy. Where should my 8 save checkpoints be? Here is my planned route so far:

Beginning - Right after the Olga fight
SAVE 1
Right after the Olga fight - Right after meeting Stillman in Strut C
SAVE 2
Right after meeting Stillman in Strut C - Beginning of Fortune "fight"
SAVE 3
Beginning of Fortune "fight" - Beginning of Harrier fight
SAVE 4
Beginning of Harrier fight - Emma oil fence escort mission
SAVE 5
Emma oil fence escort mission - Arsenal Tengu sneaking area
SAVE 6
Arsenal Tengu sneaking area - Beginning of RAY fight
SAVE 7
Beginning of RAY fight - End of game

The Solidus chokehold in the HD version is not bad at all and neither is the actual boss fight with him. This leaves me with one extra save :D where should I use it? I could split up the Tengu fights, or maybe I could save at the beginning of Vamp fight #1.

Oh man, I'm actually excited to see someone do a Big Boss run in this thread. I did it when I was 16 and I honestly think I was better at games then than I am now because I can't imagine being able to do it today and it's only 6 years later.

I think you can keep another save. If the Gurlukovich soldier fights is easy for you, I don't think you should bother saving in the tanker at all. My first save used to be right before the Fortune fight.I'm not sure I recommend that because it makes the bomb disposal tense as hell but you seem well capable of getting through the tanker without saving.

Vamp #1 is pretty easy so you don't really need to save there. I had a surefire method to him so I never bothered and now, everyone knows the method where you can just smack him with the gun for like 10 seconds which I assume you plan to do. I've never tried it but it seems to work. I had a save before Solidus' chokehold but like you said, it's easy on the HD collection.

I suppose splitting the Tengus is a good idea. Although, you did show me the glitch yesterday on how to skip the first part so maybe that won't be so bad anyway. Any area you're not particularly confident about?

Do keep us updated on your run.

No shame in it. It's not like a guide helps much with the bike chase which is the hardest part. Liquid's pretty tough too.
For some reason I found the Liquid fight to be near impossible on my first playthrough of the game on normal. After that it wasn't nearly as hard.

I would not mind doing an mgs4 bb run. Never did it actually and it has been a while since playing mgs4. Anyways for 2 I have already used 2 saves. Currently at Stillman. Doing good on time, only 25 minutes in. Will do the bomb disposal in one go. Struts F, E, and D are sure to be fun, especially since I am also getting all the cardboard boxes.

Yeah but I knew exactly where to go and the placement of every enemy. Not exactly fair either, but it was still fun as hell.

True. I got the Big Boss emblem last, after all the others. When I did my playthrough of it, it was my ninth in the same week. So I pretty much knew exactly what to do without resorting to any guides. I believe I did look up the quickest way to dispatch bosses, though. But the rest, I did on my own.

Oh man, I'm actually excited to see someone do a Big Boss run in this thread.

I have a run up for Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 3 as well as Metal Gear Solid 4.

SAVE 7
Beginning of RAY fight - End of game
.

Your saves seem fine to me. I usually don't use up my first save till after I complete the Tanker Mission completely, but as long as you're not using up over 8 saves, your placement is all down to preference. Good luck on your run.

Wow without the mask on the Enemy Guard Uniform still does add to Raiden's "camo index". I heard it on the UKnighted stream and thought they were full of shit but it's completely true. Guards have to be a little bit closer to notice you.

Another cool detail I never noticed before is that when you meet Olga on the heliport, you will start with your M9 after the cutscene finishes if that is what you have equipped, otherwise if you go in with your socom or unequipped you will start with your socom after the cutscene finishes. You see similar stuff elsewhere, like having the M9 before meeting Vamp for the first time as opposed to not. Changes the cutscene a little bit.

ANOTHER detail I noticed is that on Scott Dolph's terminal, Snake or Otacon try to login as root and fail. Then they log on as user scott and the password is the same number of asterisks as Helena.

So many details in this game...everything is details...I can't....

This is another small detail, maybe even insignificant but I love the mini-big shell layout in the background of the menu screen (or when logging into the node).

Looks like an atomic structure. May consider getting a tat of this.

Stupid question having just seen the Big Mama explanation of Big Boss, Zero & The Patriots.

Big Boss's head shrapnel. Was this ever written into the story before The Phantom Pain? I don't recall it ever being referred to - unless I missed it.

Because I saw this during the scene and recognised what I think is the shrapnel.

Btw, this isn't me claiming to have found something new or anything silly like that - I just noticed it and it kinda blew my mind.

As far as I know, the shrapnel is new. That image looks like a really big coincidence to me.

I'm gonna believe too lol.

I found out yesterday that Big Boss apparently lost his left hand but it was said he lost it after losing to Snake in Outer Heaven. Didn't know that but at least I know that the robot left hand isn't something random.

He probably loses it again during that fight.

Nah, it's just a convenient way to retcon, wouldn't be the first time Kojima retcons MG1 and 2 again. That's why we need those remakes!
I really doubt Kojima wanted to retcon his arm in MG or that he even cares about insignificant details like that. The robot arm is probably just Kojima indulging his imagination and trying to make BB look cool. What's cooler than a robot arm?

We'll probably get real retcons when he finally does the remake.

Even if it's a small change it's still a retco. Not saying it's huge or anything just saying Kojima is just ignoring a lot of small details from the first two games to make the game he wants. Nothing wrong with that.

True, but I'm saying that it probably wasn't his intention to retcon that detail from MG. The robot arm is probably unrelated. That's not to say he's not going to retcon the shit out of a remake, it would be crazy if he didn't.

i kind of get what you're saying, but it's still a "real" retcon having BB with shrapnel in his head a missing arm. i honestly don't care, but kojima has already admitted that he shoe-horns his creative ideas into metal gear games. i'm sure the idea of advanced-singing AIs was some shit kojima cooked up separately and tossed into PW

yeah, exactly. agreed
